  • The Women Airforce Service Pilots, or WASPs, of World War II were American women who aided the war effort by testing aircraft, transporting planes, and training other pilots during a time when women weren’t allowed to become regular members of the armed forces. Their service helped to pave the way for women in the military.
Hazel Ying Lee was one of these incredible women. Despite facing discrimination for both her race and her gender, she became one of the first Chinese American woman to earn a pilot’s license, and the first Chinese American WASP. In recognition of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, join the Pritzker Military Museum & Library online on Wednesday, May 10th at 11am CST for a virtual picture book reading of The Fearless Flights of Hazel Ying Lee and a conversation with the author, Julie Leung.
Julie Leung was raised in the sleepy suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia, though it may be more accurate to say she grew up in Oz and came of age in Middle-earth. She graduated with an English and journalism degree from University of Georgia. By day, she is a marketing director in book publishing. By night, she is a children’s book author. Her first picture book, Paper Son: The Story of Tyrus Wong, won the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature in 2020. Her debut series, Mice of the Round Table was praised as a “winning new adventure,” by Kirkus Reviews.
