Thanks for making us a new Pixar Eras Video Explained so could you please give us a new Walt Disney Animation Studios Eras Explained just before Wish comes out in Cinemas later this or once it’s come out for the 100th anniversary
The current plan is to wait for Wish to be in theaters. There will be other eras videos until then, but I want to wait to make sure the 2023 version of the Disney Animation eras is up to date. I don't want it to be "old" a few weeks after I post it.
When I first wrote the video I nicknamed it the "autobiographical era" which makes sense but it was a bit of a mouthful so I switched it to "personal era". Thanks for the comment and for watching.
I am not hyped for Elio either, but I think it's because I much prefer Pixar when they are more abstract rather than creating humans on screen. However, I may get more excited as we start to see more promotional material for it. I agree with you that I'm always interested in Pixar's ideas though. They try to always shoot for big ideas. Pete Docter's films are my favorite because of that.
Agree! Great vid and really well researched history of Pixar. Deserves way more views so commenting to thank you for a great video and to boost engagement for the algorithm😊
I think that's a matter of opinion and I respect it. A ton of people requested that I did this so I did. It's more or less an excuse to talk about Pixar's history and how their films have changed and why they changed. That's really the point of any of my "eras" videos.
I've only recently come across your channel. Pretty cool way to divide up their eras, in oy opinion. I've also attempted to define the different Pixar eras, and this is how I've divided them 1984-1994 - Pre-Cinematic Era, their shorts, commercials and VFX before making Toy Story 1995-2001 - Pioneer Era, when they start making family films under the Disney brand 2002-2006 - Early Golden Era, when Pixar becomes a household name and an seemed unstoppable 2006-2010 - Late Golden Era, same as before but now with Disney • Pixar brand 2011-2015 - Dark Sge, when barring a few exceptions, their critical streak had ended 2016-2020 - Nostalgia Era, focusing on sequels and stories that look to the past 2020-present day - Paradigm Shift, experimenting with art styles and entering the streaming world I've also created a timeline/infographic to better exemplify these eras, if you'd be interested to see it?
First of all, welcome to Modern Mouse! Second, I like what you've done here. i tried to keep the eras on my end to films so I didn't really include anything before Toy Story in that era but if I did, your Pre-Cinematic Era is exactly what I'd do. I like how you've divided everything up fairly logically. Appreciate the view and I hope you dig some of the other stuff I do on the channel!
The Golden Era is not only classic, but was hugely influential in me wanting to get into animation growing up, so it has a special place in my heart, although I consider the Merger Era peak Pixar (Peak-xar?). As for what’s next, seeing some of their experiments with traditional animation, I could see them bringing it back using modern technology. If anyone can bring it back, it’s them, but that’s maybe just wishful thinking. I’d also be curious what Pixar could do with AI once it has become an ethical tool to use. I know the MCU has been talked about to death and beyond on YT, but it would be interesting to hear you talk about its eras (not phases).
I'd be very excited to see some of the handdrawn/hybrid stuff come out of Pixar. Not sure how it would be received (I always think about how people dislike Studio Ghibli's choice to make a CGI movie) but I'd love to see them try something new visually for a full length feature.
Honestly, each of the phases could be considered an era. Phase 1 felt more challenging considering the time Superhero movies were in. And Phase 3 felt like they were trying to cash in hard on the MCU, a little too much. Phase 2 just feels like the bridge between Phases 1 and 3.
I remember first seeing Toy Story in a theater when it came out. You are absolutely right to compare it to Snow White. It was very hard to comprehend that computer animation could be used to create a full-length movie.
I definitely know a ton about Disney parks. Long before I was making UA-cam videos, my main topic of discussion with people was theme park history. I'd love to. I'm not sure how it would go over with the audience on this channel, but it's something I've always thought about getting back into.
I think you could say both, but I thought, in order to differentiate Pixar from Disney, and to talk about it's prominent historical significance, that's what I went with.
i see a sad decline for pixar films, not irreversible tho, i am getting sick of the 3D cgi animation that definitely infested disney, like why isnt wreck it ralph from pixar, or what makes brave pixar too? is merida a disney or pixar princess? what exactly makes big hero 6 a disney animation studios film i feel these two studios have merged their identities and simultaneously lost them
I would agree that the two studios should be trying to stray away from each other in terms of looks and types of stories they tell, but it also doesn't help Pixar that for years everyone just tried to make their movies look like Pixar movies. Now the Pixar look seems old and not as refreshing as it once was. I do hope that as other studios find their own identity, like Sony or Cartoon Saloon have, that Pixar will look fresh again even if they don't change things up.
Hey! Great video, thank you! I completely agree with the way you break down the eras, but I think that your naming for them is not the best we can pull off. Borrowing era names from Disney is boooring 😊😊😊 Here’s my suggestions: 1) Kickstart era 2) Perfection era 3) Sequel era 4) New originals era
Thanks for the comment. I totally get not wanting to go off of the standard Disney has with their eras, and these aren't bad by any means. The only one I would change is "perfection" since I assume you mean that the studio was looking to perfect their style, but it also could imply that this is the perfect era. I try to steer clear of words that state one era is better than another.
@@ModernMouse well, I believe “golden era” also implies to be the best one 🙄 In my opinion, the second era is actually an era of perfect movies for Pixar. The animation is as good as you wouldn’t point at anything in those movies saying ‘well, tech for this wasn’t there yet’. Storytelling also gets as good as it can (except Cars maybe)
Fair point to the "golden era". I've always seen it as a reference to the "gold standard" meaning that Disney (and in this case Pixar) were setting the bar for what animation can and should be. I agree with you that the 4 film run of Wall-E, Ratatouille, Up, and Toy Story 3 is probably their greatest run of films though.
Smooth ad transition there Josh. Plus smart idea not to incliude links so those of us who just want the video without the ad cant skip ahead lol (note not hating Comment section just a compliment or do u guys forget what that's like?)
When UA-cam rolled out the "chapters" feature I totally understood why they did it and I've heard arguments from both sides of why I either should or shouldn't use them. As a completionist myself, I'm not all that interested in only having people watch a 3 minute portion, although people will. I guess I am choosing not to give people an easy way to do so. Plus, and this is the honest to god truth, the ad in this video is something I needed to be doing more often because I put about 30-40 hours into each video, and while I love doing it for the sake of it, I now also have several people contributing to Modern Mouse in a variety of ways and I know I can't ask them to continue to help out for free forever.
@@ModernMouse oh Im sorry I wasnt criticizing the fact u use in video ads (as most people call them) cause duh thats how YTs get paid (seriously I have a friend who graciously showed me how much money YTs get from the pre ad logos(ur alocohol car commerical etc) and its shockingly low) I just meant it as a compliment as some YTs will intro the ad and I find that distracting and interrupts the flow of the video. i meant it as a compliment I swear the paraphrased were for the comment section that comment to me how im being mean etc.
I gotcha! I wasn't coming after you. I was just trying to explain why I started doing more of it...also thank you for liking how it flowed. I always want to integrate the ad read (if there is one) into the video somehow. In the muppet/drug video I actually spent a good amount of time trying to figure out how to put the ad read into the video. What ended up in the video was the 3rd version of what Joe and I wrote.
@@ModernMouse yeah personally it doesnt really bother me if theres an ad read as long as its reletively short. Not a big fan of 3 min plus ad reads as i feel at that point its a bit excessive and sometimes is used to extend video length.
I can agree with that. I don't know how long the one in this video is but I tried to break it down into the simplest form possible so I wasn't just going on and on about Patreon.
Dreamworks and Studio Ghibli are on my shortlist. I haven't seen every film from both studios like I have with Pixar and Disney so those might be research heavy and delayed slightly. I'll try to get to one of those by the end of the year but no promises.
@@ModernMouse Yeah! watch out for "graveyard of the fireflies" by Studio Ghibli though as that one is EXTERMELY SAD. I cried during the one scene no lie (no spoilers)
@@ModernMouse have ur dog (or comfort support animal if u're not a dog person but why????) tissues and comfort food by u my friend. Luckily for u that's one of the earlier ones so my advice would be watch it first and get it over with.

I've been wondering what the current era would be called and the "personal" era seems very accurate!
Thanks for another great video 🙏

It got pushed back until summer 2025 :/
Thanks for another lovingly crafted and thoroughly entertaining video.

It hasnt been around long enough making movies to have eras.

Did you know Steve Jobs got most of his profit from Disney stock rather than Apple. He didn’t want to come back initially.
I've heard this before, just never had the resources to verify it.

I don’t like the name Merger Era. It has too many ‘ers’ and should either be called the Silver Era or something.

Read animal look alikes: butterflies or moths? Book available for B&N.
