I saw this when it aired, and on a whim, just re-watched it. And I wasn't really expecting the whole thing to hit so hard in the feels. The significance of this little cultural milestone and the authenticity and decency of all involved was what I found the most striking.
Back in the day, I would shake my head, roll my eyes and maybe feign gagging myself when older folks would get emotional about something in the past, and say things like "where did the time go?"
So. Here I am. 2024. And it absolutely *_blows my mind_* to try to comprehend the _instantaneous_ passage of multiple decades since this aired. I feel like a time traveler, a lost one at that, having unfortunately emerged in to some bizarre, future parallel time line.
If you are mid-20s _now_ like I was _then,_ rolling your eyes at all the ancient nostalgic coots, then *mark my words:*
Tomorrow morning you will wake up and find that somewhere between three and four decades will have passed. _Overnight._ I doubt you believe me, but seriously, tomorrow morning you'll find yourself in the year 2059, and realize that you're staring 60 years old straight on in just a few weeks. And you won't have the *_tiniest clue_* as to how or why that giant chunk of time passed in a single night.
So my advice is to cherish today.
_PS: RIP Sonny, I had no idea you were such a sweet guy. And Cher? I had no idea you are so damn likeable!_

They obviously have something very special between them that defies explanation. Everything that could be said at Sonny's funeral speaks volumes how they felt about each other. I'm so glad Cher agreed to sing with Sonny. She was definitely reluctant . . . not prepared. But as soon as it was over, I think she was happy she sang with him because it was a special moment. It was special for her and him and everyone that was watching and I think she came to realize that as she was performing. But even more so, she's probably extremely grateful that she had this moment now, considering what ultimately happened. I'm sure Chaz cherishes this moment too. It turns out sadly, it was the last time she sang with Sonny.

Agree. And it was not a given that they'd ever be on TV together again, even as guests in the same show. Keep in mind that they were not always on friendly terms and it took Cher a long time to get over the fact that Sonny tried to control her in their marriage while he was openly cheating on her. That this was the end of their public life together was quite a miracle. Circle completed, the perfect final send off from Sonny and Cher.

Thank you so much for posting the entire show and adding Cher's final appearance with Dave in 2015...this is probably my all time favorite Letterman show, saw it the 1st time and was thrilled to see Sonny & Cher together again, so sweet when Cher tells Dave "I'm gonna miss you" at the end in 2015, I miss Dave too....Great memories !! : )

Awesome; one of Letterman's best ever, no doubt! Sonny & Cher, what a spectacular combination of talent & spontaneity. Your music lives on!

Sonny is also a sweet, kind, and wonderful man. I’ve met him several times, at Heavenly Valley in Lake Tahoe, sadly, where he died.

@@thejjjs7786 He was married four times!...Apparently, being sweet and kind is not enough to sustain a marriage.

Cher and Sonny...truly radiant people and to me, this is above all else the best footage to remember them. I felt for them because I don't think they knew how much they would well up.
