Argh! Sorry Henry but I've got to get this off my chest. At 5:43 your tripod is looking precarious. You need to either extend your left two legs or drop your right leg. Not enough height? Then you need a centre post or taller tripod. Just trying to save you breaking another camera. 😉

HENRY NOOOO!!!!!, I don't know if it's the camera angle but your tripod looks in a precarious angle, every time it came into shot I thought bugger me it's going to go over!!!!

For me, it is a mistake not to level the tripod and extend the leg on the side where the weight could pull it (or shorten the other 2)

Fantastic!! There's certainly something magical about the golden hues gently blending into the blue hues. A technique I've seen used in many genres of photography and art over the years. And it just nails it! Everytime. Colour composition is often overlooked.

I was confused as to why your tripod with the Z7 wasn't levelled. Why wouldn't you level the tripod when that's a basic function of the tripod. Lessons learned? Great photos btw.

That 300mm shot with the boat just nails everything that is great about telephoto photography, just a fantastic image and really well spotted. Defo going to experiment more with DX mode after seeing that! Really sad about the OM5, hopefully they will offer a fair repair price. I find the 24-200 performs best at around F8, I think it is a wee bit sharper in the center vs F11, only really matters if you are cropping the image tho.

You need to send the OM5 and lens off to the OM repair centre in Portugal. Everything is fixed price, irrespective of the amount of damage, so you just book it in through the web site which will tell you how much it will cost including all postage. It shouldn't be away for long, turnaround is normally around 2 weeks to the UK if I remember. I've had reason to use it a couple of times and found the service to be top notch!

    Hello Henry
Sorry but looking at the way you have your tripod set up I can't help but wonder this had anything to do with your mishap. It might just be the camera angle but it looks as though the center column of your tripod is nowhere near vertical or plumb in some of the video. Having had several near misses myself, I try to avoid this as much as possible as as slight bump can cause the whole thing to tip over with disastrous results. Also I have found that setting the tripod with one leg downhill and two legs uphill makes the the tripod more stable. This way the center of gravity of the camera and tripod is not as near the edge to the triangle formed by the tripod legs.
Cheers and thank you for the great videos!

Henry that last image you put up with the little fishing boat is absolutely stunning. Personally I'd crop in a bit more and lose the top of the tree bottom right. But wow what a shot! Regarding aperture I've seen quite a few videos recently where different photographers suggest using the sweet spot of your lens as the best option where the conditions allow so usually 2 stops above the lowest your lens will go so if F2.8 then use F5.6 you'll get the sharpest images that way even if using a tripod. Wonderful content as always sorry to see the OM5 take a hit hope you can get it back up and running soon 👍

Gorgeous images Henry, although I’m an amateur I fully understand the exposure triangle and aperture to me is a means to getting the right shutter speed for any given situation. Since day one (3 years ago now) I have almost exclusively shot in full manual mode as it makes me think about the situation/conditions I’m faced with or the effect I am after. The only time I think about aperture first is with regard to depth of field. If I can’t take a landscape shot handheld due to situation/conditions I’ll whack it on a tripod. The beauty of landscape photography is you almost always have the option for either 😉 sorry for the damage to your OM5, I’d be gutted 🙁

I was worried you were going to drop and break your Z7 and lens in addition to your OM5 with the way you were standing your tripod a few times there,
I like to use f11 to f14 and more so with f13 to f14 for deeper focal depth as long as my ISO and shutter speed are ok for my usual hand holding with a stabilized body or lens, and the Z7 has diffraction compensation that I sometimes use,
Great scenery when the light starts coming down !

Loving the shots in that mist. Your tripod looks to be at a very unstable angle, is this why your camera fell on the floor. When you look at the video and see how upright you, and the surrounding landscape are, your tripod looks like it's about to fall over.

Everyone has their own opinion about things. Yours about the aperture is fine. In your photo videos, I'd like to see that you use a tripod properly. They have adjustable leg lengths for a reason. That is so you can balance them as not to fall over. Getting your camera base repaired will likely cost the better part of a new tripod. LoL

Hi Henry, another grand day out and thanks for sharing. Lovely ethereal images, right place, right time makes all the difference .. not to mention having having some real skill behind the Z7. So sorry to hear about the wounded soldier, hopefully a better outcome than the long lamented D7200. Can't help but think that with a ding like that on both the lens and the OM5, that's going to be expensive. But it is so easily done!!! Commiserations to your wallet! If I might offer a suggestion, the tripod in the video didn't look the most stable I've ever seen, get it level and maybe try hanging something from the middle to lower the centre of gravity even if its not windy ... even if you take an empty bag on a bit of string, you could fill it with any old rubbish at your location ( like the rocks in my head ) to save carrying extra weight on your hikes. It's that (H)en(RY)thusiasm tripping you up a bit mate ... but really appreciated by your viewers. Hope the OM5 gets better soon!

F11 as a general rule of thumb is optimum for depth of field without running into diffraction, similarly maximum sharpness of a lens is when stopped down about two or three stops from wide open

Olympus/OM do offer a good repair service but it's from £200. They will send it off to Lisbon, Portugal and keep you as well informed of progress as a mushroom, but they do a good job. This does rather show the disadvantage of plastics over the mag-alloy construction.

Some great shots here Henry but my word you do live dangerously! Just look at the angle of your tripod at 12.15 ! For me that tripod is nothing like vertical and risking it with nothing to counterweight the camera. Also why do photographers wander around with no strap attached to their camera at 6.25? It might be “cool” but it is certainly tempting gravity 😮 🫣
    Thanks for the video though.

Aw man.... Sorry about the camera! It should be fixable, though. Re: aperture, when shooting at infinity there's no DOF issues so there's reason to use anything other than your lens' best aperture. For my Canon EF 70-200 f/4L, that's somewhere from 5.6 to 8. But I have to remind myself each time I push the button! LOL

    • @StephenStrangways
      @StephenStrangways 9 місяців тому

When shooting at infinity, your composition can still include things that are closer than infinity that may not fall into the DoF of some apertures.

    • @lphilpot01
      @lphilpot01 9 місяців тому

@@StephenStrangways that's true but I said "shooting at infinity", not "from X to infinity". I was referring to the entire scene being at infinity, therefore having no need for back-DOF, as it were.

Those zoomed in pictures were oustanding. The composition is class but the tones and the overal mood of the images are just truly mind blowing. A well done is little compared to how i was feeling watching the video.
The one thing I'd like to ask, as i dont understand it, is as you were on tripod, did you set the aperture at 11 for the shutter speed due to the mist of is it because its a habit of the f11?
Need to watch this video and take it all in again. Thanks Henry, that was superb.

The plastic baseplate has been the Achilles heel of the EM5iii and they used the same body for the OM5. It's the main reason I've not traded in my EM1ii. But I haven't heard of issues with the 12-200mm, it's mainly been the bigger 100-400 and 300mm lenses. I hope the repair isn't too expensive. And I hope that OMDS switch to a metal baseplate for the OM5ii whenever it appears.
As for diffraction, it's massively over-rated. It's real but with modern lenses, even with diffraction, they are still sharper than a lens from 40 years ago at its sweet spot.

Another awesome video. Thank You Henry for sharing your experiences and knowledge. I have heard that is one of the downsides to the OM 5. I would say to try B&H Photo. I am not sure if you would have issues with something in the US. I am waiting on the magnetic lens cover, and then I will be out and about with my OM 5. I am so looking forward to using it and seeing what I can come up with. Thanks again and best of luck getting that repaired or replaced.

Thank you for the review about aperture. Tomorrow I will get out with my lenses and identify their sweet spots. You had, like always, some really nice pictures. Thanks for doing the videos. Great job!

Sad that modern camera equipment is so vulnerable to damage. I guess it’s the plastic content, it saves. Bit of weight but at a cost of durability…
Great shots, I have few chances at foggy mornings here in New Mexico.

My aperture is primarily used as a DOF or subject isolator tool... My shutter speed and iso take care of the speed required for the subject matter... It's why I only shoot "M"...
The only time I use the aperture to aid light/speed is on an early morning sports shoot- usually a mass triathlon- where light is usually limited and I don't want to use galactic iso settings !

Sorry about the camera, mate. I have an OM-5 too and, because of the connection, I will never use it with a tripod. Hope you can get it fixed. Cheers, Peter.

Thanks Henry, shame about the OM!! Reminded me of when I was in Peru and police took exception to me photographing a certain building! My Minolta 7000 was smashed to the ground and the lens snapped off the mount!! Both totally ruined!! Love the photos you have taken this morning! I used to favour taking photos at f5,6 but lately f8-f11 on my Nikon Z7II. All the best Graham

Thanks Henry for sharing your experience & interesting comments.... great location with magnificent results....I only shoot hand held so I spend more time on shutter speed & let the camera (D500) choose the aperture & ISO...but I am just a hobbyist so I dont spend time adjusting settings to any extent.....I am always interested in your thoughts & comments... hope you get your camera fixed... cheers from Australia 🦘🦘😊

You’ve excelled yourself again Henry! Beautiful images and I must say I’m a touch jealous of your ‘local’ area. I wasn’t sure about the image with the buildings and the car headlights, my eyes were drawn to the headlights first but I suppose they work to give scale and to tell a story. So sorry about the OM5. One of the hazards of being a photographer! Look forward to the next adventure.

Looks like your Z7 was also in danger on your tripod. I don't know if it was just the angle of the shot, but it looked far too upright to me! As for the images: absolutely stunning. Very well done, but no more than you deserved getting there at that time in the morning. Thanks again for a beautiful, thought provoking video.
    Regards, Walter.

I have a nikkor 28-300 that lives on my old full frame nikon. I have found f9.5 is the sweet spot for this lens and camera so that is where I start. But you are right about using the whole triangle to get the shot. You have to adjust to the situation. The camera and lens are tools, you are the brains that guide them. Change what you have to to get the shot.
I enjoy your posts. Genuine enthusiasm.

It was so cold in Iceland and I snapped the Manfrotto tread from the plate in the base of the camera, it was very early in to the trip so i was determined to not be without a tripod. I ended up using things from the cutlery draw of the lodge that I was staying at to cut a slot in the remaining thread and used pins to gradually wind it out, it took 4 hours! With my tools at home I could have had it out within minutes. I had a spare plate so was back in the game!! Very proud moment that was and now I take a small tool kit everywhere. My fav was in Crete when my hard drive packed up and I managed to get into the main city and purchase a new hard disk and replaced it with a screwdriver from a Christmas cracker. I had a tablet to obtain a copy of windows and a usb pen drive, what can I say, I love the challenge!

Hiya Mark, I've heard about these issues but this was 100% my fault, the camera caned into a rock as it fell, I'd have expected similar damage from any camera. 👍🏻

@@HenryTurnerphotoI’ve had an EM5 Mark iii for nearly 2 years and no problems with it ( hope I haven’t jinxed myself.). I thought I had heard it was arca Swiss plates where there were issues. Now I have a simpler tripod setup and maybe that’s helped.. Love your channel and your enthusiasm. Hopefully, not too painful to get fixed. OM-5 I think is still a good camera. Cheers from Canada.
