FWIW - While original TOP trumpeter Greg Adams did use a Flugelhorn for that solo on the record, and still does today when he plays the song with his band East Bay Soul, his colleague (also-original) trumpet player Mic Gillette (RIP) did not always when he played that solo. For example, when I played with Mic with the band Tortilla Soup, Mic did not. That video is here in my collection which you can search. Thus, I would suggest it is appropriate, either way. Just play it well! :)
