  • In today's video, we will see a rare appearance of CSRX GP35 216/N&W 1328 on the valley train. This engine is usually assigned to the notch train. Usually locomotive 573 would be assigned to this train, but due to crew shortages 216 would be taking the train.
216 is a GP35 built for the Norfolk and Western Railway (as 1328) in 1965. It was absorbed into Norfolk Southern and was purchased by Guilford Rail sometime in the 80's. It was renumbered to 216 and was used in service. In 2010 it was traded to Conway Scenic, along with GP38 252, in exchange for FP9s 6505 and 6516. This engine is usually assigned to the Notch Train power, having being solely the only notch train power since 2020 due to the absence of GP38 252. Even with 252 back in service, 216 remains the main power of the Notch Train up to this day.

Try and see if you can catch tomorrow’s Sawyer River excursion. I’ll be on the end of it in the Gertrude Emma!
