Picking Out Quilting Stitches

  • Hello everyone! Today I'm going to show you how to pick out quilting stitches.
You will need a sharp stitch ripper, a twister and a white eraser (if your stitch ripper doesn't come with a rubber end). You can also use your fingernails to rub out the stitch holes.
The first rule of ripping out stitches is to not beat yourself up over what has happened. Everyone that sews has to rip stitches out at some point or other and that includes the most experienced quilters as well.
The second rule is not to delay the ripping out of stitches. The longer the stitches are in the quilt top, the harder they are to remove so, just take a deep breathe, calm down and start to rip out those stitches.
The third rule is make a judgement as to whether or not those stitches really have to come out or not. In the example I showed you in this video, if the quilt was for me, those stitches could stay but because it was a charity quilt, those stitches were too uneven to stay in.
The fourth rule is stop pointing out your mistakes. Other people can't see them so stop worry about this.
Remember, once that quilt is washed, chances are you will not be able to see the mistakes that you made during the quilting because the texture of the quilting will hide them.
I hope this helps you conquer your Mount Scrapmore!

I was so touched by your approach to charity quilts. I learned something very important from you today when you said, “This quilt is special!” Oh my! I often have the attitude about quilts that didn’t quite work out right that as long as it’s cute and warm I can always donate it somewhere. Or even, oh well, it’s only a charity quilt. Thank you for all your videos, and most especially for opening my eyes. You and your quilting group are very special people!

I like that your stitch ripping session isn't about perfection, maybe it's about changing the look of the stitch pattern or realizing your machine needs a cleaning (or it's going catch a toe.) It's about presentation not self-deprecation. Sometimes stitch ripping therapy for the soul in the form of meditation...yes?!?

A necessary evil, for sure...we are human..humans are not perfect...truly, it is a blessing to have imperfections (adds character to life)

Yes, I agree that having a few imperfections can be most beautiful. I'm hoping that people who watch this understand that I can make mistakes too and was trying to show them how to correct it. (If the quilt was for me, I would have left those wonky stitches in and just keep moving forward!) Thank you for watching and supporting our little channel!

I have bent end tweezers that are strong and precise. I love them. I use it for threading my serger (the tweezers that come with machines are crap), picking out stitches, thread, setting pieces when I need a precision placement. For 8 bucks it is a life saver. I have a Havel scythe seam ripper. It has replacement blades so is always sharp. Great vid.

You have some pretty awesome tools for ripping out thread, I'm jealous! (Just kidding!) I have a pair of long bent end tweezers and I use them to hold the fabric when I can't get my fingers too close to the needle of a sewing machine. Thanks for watching and supporting our little channel!

@@conqueringmountscrapmorewi2509 I use for that too, but I have this awesome machined stiletto that came in an antique foot collection that I bought for low shank forked feet that slide in and are clamped down on my 1946 Kenmore rotary machine. The quality of old stitch tools never seizes to amaze me. That Kenmore (by White) It does one thing and one thing well..stitch perfect stitches.

I have a suggestion for you to consider to make your unpicking easier (having watched the entire thing). First, I suggest that you consider acquiring a Havel scythe (Havel Ultra Pro--all of $10 bucks plus replacement blades) seam ripper. It is a pro tool and you are a pro. The blade is very thin and sharp and can slip underneath stitches better than the thicker rippers. Second, if you slip and cut every 4th-5th stitch (it simply glides underneath your stitch and you can do this very rhythmically), turn your work over, take your bent precision tipped tweezers and pull the bottom thread....the thread will pull up in one piece throughout the length of what you have clipped on the topside of your work. I offer this after having sewn a flanking triangle backwards on about 45 units yesterday. I almost cried when I opened up the seam to press and realized my folly.

That is a great tip about cutting every 4th or 5th stitch and pulling the bobbin thread! I do that when I made clothes, I don't know why I don't do that when I quilt. I have went to the local quilt stores here in Edmonton, Alberta and I have not been able to find that Havel Scythe. I may have to get them to order that tool in. Thanks for your comments and supporting our little channel!

@@conqueringmountscrapmorewi2509 Hah! That is precisely where I learned the technique as well. I buy everything-on line. We do have a very large quilt shop about an hour from me, but I have never been there. I have visited a couple of locally owned shops. As I'm a never pay retail person, I like to shop sales. One shop had not one thing on sale and perversely limited selection of fabrics. Sigh.

What kind of longarm do you have? Oh my gosh! I had the same fabric where you are first showing your tools. I had the white with blue/brown fabric. I backed my grand daughters quilt with it! I LOVE that fabric! Do you buy some of your fabrics at Walmart (theirs seems thin) or do you only use premium quilt store fabrics?

Hello Airmom! I'm thrilled that you like my video. I have a Pfaff longarm and I do buy my fabrics from Local quilt shops as well as big box stores as long as the quality and thread count is good. Our Next Sew Date is December 17 from 9:00 am to 5 pm MST. Sorry for the late reply as I have been visiting grandkids and then getting sick. The Facebook group is using the room in the group for impromptu sew dates. If you are interested, please join and I would love to chat with you. I hope you have a joyful week ahead.
