I use it as “yes” and I think it might be wrong. When someone asks me a question I often say 是 instead of 对 or 嗯嗯 but I’m very awkward using 嗯 in 口语. So, I think what I’m trying to say is, does 是mean “yes, sir” or is it okay to continue using 是as an equivalent to “yes”?
The kids I work with, (and who are helping to tutor me), told me just last week to stop using 是 all the time for “yes”-that it’s “safer” to use 对 to avoid offending anyone. I have to admit though; I don’t know if everyone in China is overly sensitive or I just happened to meet a group that’s extremely concerned about not offending others; but there have been a few nights that I just disconnected from WeChat because everything I said, whether in Chinese or English, seemed to “offend” someone. (OR they corrected me so that I wouldn’t offend someone in the future. 🙄🤯😂 -which, by the way, I’m not supposed to use when messaging with someone older than myself. Since I have yet to meet anyone older than me on WeChat; it hasn’t been much of a problem... 😂)
It's not an exact equivalent. How you say yes depends on the question and the verb in the question. I have a video about this. I think it's just called How to Say Yes in Chinese, if you search for it you'll find it

是 is the exact equivalent of ndiyo in Swahili.....
Ndiyo does not mean necessarily yes...You can replace 是 with ndiyo to mean exactly the same thing
