Commonly, and incorrectly, referred to as True Detective Season 4, True Detective: Night Country has come and gone and it was...pretty awful. By far the worst season of True Detective yet, Night Country was all over the place. Dragged down by extraneous storylines and subplots involving irrelevant characters, this show puts almost no focus on the actual detective work that made True Detective season 1 such a success. Pair that with a HORRIBLE ending and the show's desire to lean into the "supernatural" to explain the deaths in question, and you're left pointing the finger at new creator & writer Issa Lopez while wondering why Nic Pizzolatto allowed them to fly under the "True Detective" banner.

-Jupiter-sized plot holes
-justification of mob justice and murder, then the two girl-boss cops cover it up
-The main character with the pierced face MURDERS a guy (wife beater), tortures another guy and then persuades him to commit suicide
-man bad/women good...ESPECIALLY INDIGENOUS WOMEN!
-Rip offs from S1 and then claiming in the media that S4 has no relation to S1,
-Annie K on video getting killed in the tunnels, then E6 shows her getting murdered in the lab
-earth scientists pressuring/encouraging a company to pollute more
-Young male cop kills his father (justified, considering he was going to kidnap a suspect) but then has to clean it up and dump the bodies
-Stoner old lady alerts the cops of the dead scientists and is never questioned by police
-Romanticising suicide

Im surprised the massive plot hole of Annies murder video hasnt been spoken of more. They made a big deal out of showing her murder video which were clearly in the caves and yet the actual murder took place in the middle of a lab..not only that but if the video was recording then it would have picked up Clark crying and strangling her. And yet NOBODY is mentioning this!
-Kayla suddenly taking Peter back because he just has to do 'one more thing,' and then he's all hers? Like, does she know what he just did?
-Qavvik being a completely useless character
-The oranges thing that treated like it was some huge payoff when it was literally just that her mom liked oranges, lol
-The mysterious ice caves being situated about six yards from the tsalal
-Girl boss gets slammed in the back of the head with a fire extinguisher, 5 minutes later finds and beats the shit out of Ryamond Clark

The way all the mild mannered scientists attacked that lady was so crazy. She could have taken photos of the evidence she found and exposed them but instead she started screaming and wrecking stuff until she got caught. Genius. Girl bossing in the night country.

The show misled the viewers, the scientist bodies looked like they saw something terrible and then immediately died. That's not how people freeze to dead. Also the solid frozen man coming back to life for a dumb jumpscare was ridiculous.

Women ive told online hate that i dislike the show. I mean, why do they fight for every show thats led by DEI hires like thats the last hill to stand on. At least pick a good show to gate keep, not just any show on the menu?? Some shows are bad, unfortunately. But because they women, they cant do no wrong. It dont matter they are women but the show runner is a plagiarist & a white man hating loser so it will show in her work.

Man, when all the Inuit women turned into Charles Bronson and rocked up at the research station, whooping and hollering, I have never laughed so much in my life. Absolute debacle and a stain on the True Detective brand. Everybody hated season 2 for some weird reason. It is like The Sopranos compared to this. Mind numbingly bad.

My wife and I (who are huge fans of the 1st season) stared at each other and agreed it wasn't a good sign when the indigenous police chick, with police regulation face piercings, effortlessly took down and overpowered the 6'5" hungover dude. When Jodie Foster revealed her indigenous adopted daughter I said to my wife, "I bet she's gay". We had a good laugh when it came out a few minutes later. Then there was the "evil white woman" comment to Jodie Foster, and we knew for sure what the show was really about. Anyway, we lasted about another 20-30 minutes before we couldn't take the agenda inspired contrivances and pointless conversations that didn't drive the story forward, and never finished episode 1.
So...who at HBO thought that a woman who had directed four Spanish language featurettes was qualified to write, produce and direct a six episode series this ambitious. There's barely enough compelling story here for three episodes. This is obvious and amateurish. Skip it and watch your daughter's fifth grade piano recital. It's better.

My mouth was agape during the entire "Revenge of The Cleaning Ladies" reveal. I couldnt believe this shit the bed that hard. All those red herrings just such a dumb ending.
But you know when they were making it they thought it was awesome.
My favorite part in the finale was when they saw the handprint on the hatch, which immediately reminded her of the 3 fingered woman, but it didn't come to mind when she saw the same handprint on the clothes days earlier in like episode 3 lol

I was excieted when I heard there was going to nbe another season of TD. This was a horrendous effort, and I agree with your review that there were no bad actors in the season, but the acting WAS bad; this was due to poor writing. I hate to say it but I think this has killed the True Detective franchise. Even the heavily panned season 2 was light-years better than this drivel. The writer focused more on advancing identity politics and diversity-equality-inclusion themes in the story rather than on simply focusing on telling an intriguing story a-la-True Detective within which important issues could have organically bubbled up to the surface. It's a pity that the opportunity was squandered. I hated it.
This reminds me strongly of a superb X-Files episode named "Ice." It was in the first or second season. Scientists were at a very remote Alaskan facility researching the Arctic ice core, which involved them drilling into the ice and extracting core samples. All of them died mysteriously and violently. Scully and Mulder were assigned to investigate. It's those 2 plus at least two scientists and the pilot and maybe one other guy. Of course, they are stuck there for longer while a blizzard rages and they can't leave. Then whatever affected the scientists to delete themselves and each other starts affecting them...

Yeah I remember that episode. That episode was much, MUCH better than anything this had to offer.
It was on first season, a very good homage to John Carpenter's The Thing. It was only a 40 minutes episode, but the writing is on another level.

The way the tension and danger kept increasing, and Scully and Mulder did not know each other very well yet at this point, and weren’t sure they could trust even each other. I remember my friends and me raving about this episode on the next school day lol
It’s a shocking decline in quality that we have been experiencing from Hollywood.
Hopefully things will improve although probably not within Hollywood. I’m thinking of independent studios.
There’s a YT channel run by a former network executive named “Call Me Chato“. He recently had a video on why older shows are much more popular on streaming than anything new. I think you might enjoy it, and his channel in general. He has a unique perspective on the entertainment industry. He’s also the oldest UA-camr I’ve ever seen so he has a ton of experience. 😁

The problem is that Issa Lopez is such a narcissist that she can't see her own problems and the media isn't helping the cause either. She is trying to be David Lynch but her outcome is laughable and beyond stupid. This season is 90% fluff and 10% true detective. But according to Lopez, S4 Finale has a 54% increase of viewership than S1 hence it must be better right? This was by far a step down from the other seasons and a disgrace to True Detective.
People gradually came on to TD-1 the way they slowly discovered The Office (UK original series) which was by word of mouth from those who understandably raved about the show.
TD-NC received high viewership because of the immense quality of TD-1, but I bet my life nobody changed the channels when watching TD-1, whereas PLENTY stopped watching TD-NC and fairly quickly.
I would refute one aspect of your review -- there are some bad actors in this, especially Kali Reiss as Navarro. Her single Ving Rhames-like glower barely changed through six episodes. She might have been passable if the writing and directing had supported her better, but this has to be one of the most poorly thought out and executed mysteries I've ever seen. Wish I had all those hours back...
I made it as far as 18:00 minutes into the finale, and I found that, frankly, I couldn't care less how it all turned out. You nailed it though. Good Acting. BAD writing. Squandered setting.

I couldn't agree more. This show didn't even get the weather right. Characters and be outside for hours with no ill effects. Then a scientist instantly freezes fifty feet out the door. Garbage.

I love how all of the scientists just go along with the women. Not one fights back, tries to run, or calls their bluff. If ONE of them fires then the whole case is closed instantly. What a sloppy way to try to pull this show together.
It could've been something good, but they screwed up so bad with the finale. So bad. It was like a completely different person jumped in to write the last episode.

I felt like I was slowly being poisoned by the mining waste while trying to follow the plot, if that was intentional bravo but I really have doubts. Also the girl power influence is palpable, I barely remember 3 male characters and they were all kind of weak and stupid in their portrayal.
Loved the first season, seasons 2 & 3 were ok to me but I bailed on the 3rd episode of this season. Really not a good show in my opinion.
Biggest beef is letting them go at the end and a "confession" not seen as under duress not being thrown out.

It's just a poor rip-off of Fortitude with window dressing to connect it superficially to True Detective season 1. Where were the detectives?
The resolution makes Annie K a criminal, not a victim. And for some reason, all of the scientists bar one who "loved her" participate in her murder. And despite being beaten and stabbed 32 times, it's the one who "loved her" that chokes her out while she's already mortally wounded. It's utterly imbecilicYet entirely necessary, to provide the collective "men bad, women good" idiocy the show is trying to project to not only justify the cleaning ladies, but also give him a compelling reason to confess and top himself.
Except he didn't need to kill her to feel guilty enough to confess or top himself, but if he didn't participate after intervening, then no "all men bad".
On the cleaning ladies, how do they know the Tsalal scientists killed Annie K? There's no evidence for them to find. They ludicrously find evidence of the work they're doing, but how does that prove they murdered the violent criminal Annie K, who destroyed potentially billions of dollars and a world changing scientific breakthrough?
She's not a victim. Tying the women's actions to Annie was stupid, as it was not only ridiculously undeveloped, but the evidence of the disease inducing pollution cover up gives them ample motivation anyway, without them hearing about Annie on the wind or whatever idiotic nonsense Issa was trying to convey.
What a shit show.
So Danvers rightly has no family now. Navarro wandered off to die of exposure and haunt Ennis as what? Spectral Caine from Kung Fu? Is she going to "walk the Earth" within a 5 mile radius, solving the problems of the week for the downtrodden locals? At least there won't be a season 2 of this crapfest.

It wasn't written for the series at all, it was a completely unrelated story that HBO bought and thought it would be a good idea to connect it to Season 1. So they inserted a few iconic references to S1.
That's why the spirals, the ghost of Travis Cohle, and the Tuttle name was sprinkled in, but they meant nothing, went nowhere and contributed nothing to the story.
It would've been a better production if they kept the True Detective name off the title.
So if I was watching this show right a ghost took a tongue from a dead woman moved it to be found by a "detective" a crackhead survives in an old boat in sub zero temps and Ms dimple piercings time traveled to scare a confession out of the only survivor of the lab......fml

I had High Hopes after previous seasons and starring Foster.Episode 1 fun, but it was downhill after that.I found it kind of boring, with lots of fast forwarding during never ending long walk scenes into the night or the caves. Not a fan of flashbacks

For me, the biggest mysteries were who was who and how were they related to each other.
It took 1/2 the first episode to show to viewers Foster was Hawke’s ex-wife, and then suddenly she’s got all these ex-lovers, a kid, step-kids, dependents, hell I lost track.
Lopez’ writing was just awful; if I have to guess something as simple as who a character is in relation to someone else, how is Lopez going to handle a complex mystery (answer: very poorly)

I really did want to give this series a chance, as it had a lot of great things going for it - fantastic setting, Jodie Foster, gruesome looking deaths. But it all fell apart in the final twist- with more holes in it than a Swiss cheese. Pretty disappointing!

The show wasnt just bad, it verged on hateful towards white men the same way the nazis did in early 1930s Germany. And its a terrible comparison to make, but to treat a certain demographic in such an appalling way purely for ideological reasons, and the show still gets made, shows just how low we have sunk as a society. Everyone involved in this last series should never work in television again.

Wish I had enough time! The short breakdown is that you're better off being on your phone for 90% of each episode and the 10% that matters is totally nullified by the ending.

The problem was we were used by our imaginations and we thought it was tied to season 1 which it wasn’t? Plus we got the sopranos are they dead ending. Nobody complained until the finale as we all thought they promised us a tie in based on clues

I glad someone's seen the light, thought it was just me who thought this was terrible. A lot of newspaper and different websites have given this 5 stars, all I can say is : they must have either been paid or not even watched it. The script is terrible , how has this passed so many professionals to get made????????? I sat cringing as I watched , but kept thinking, stick with it, the ending must be fantastic , especially because its so shite , got to be a great ending for it to have been made with millions of pounds....but sadly the ending is like having food poisoning, awful, id give it 1 star and that's for the Billy Eilish theme tune (Quality)

Season two was, in fact, Pizzolatto's masterpiece. A tour de force of American crime drama. Will ignore season four due to the evident cultural programming.
The characters say "fuck" waaay too often without any sense of poetry or wit. It got really annoying. Also, so many cringe needledrops? What the hell was that Twist & Shout cover? Was I supposed to laugh? It felt like the show was run by someone trying way too hard to be hip, edgy and cool.
It was actually great……..until the finale. That finale was horrible

This season was the dumbest thing I've seen try to be serious that isn't satire. I find myself laughing more than intrigued.. The last episode The police chief is trapped in a glass room and she has a pistol... She decides to holster her pistol and break a pole off a door or something And then bash through the glass, and then decides to rearm herself with the pistol. I mean if the pipe is superior to the pistol why did you leave the pipe behind?😂 Navarro gets bashed in the head with a fire extinguisher And we see her getting dragged down the hallway unconsciously and then the very next scene after chief figures out how to get out of her mousetrap, You see Navarro beating an unconscious body of a man who was, just in the last scene dragging her down the hallway unconscious... And without any context.. The level of delusion in this season can only be written by women.
This is more like a horror movie than a police detective thriller. Disappointed.
I've argued that season 2, if it had never been named as a True Detective series, would go down as a flawed but highly watchable and "classic" series as a stand alone. Mare of Easttown falls into that category for me (thankfully, never named in any affiliation with True Detective!). Season 3 would have been an acceptable, if disappointing (in light of Season 1) sequel to Season one. This is utter crap and I knew it after episode 2, but hoped briefly that it would improve. It got worse and worse. The last 2 episodes were total drivel. How could any producer or exec at HBO sign off on this script or after watching this product? They should all be fired and Issa Lopez should be banned from ever working in North America again. It's that laughably bad. Rose should've chopped a hole in the ice and tossed this script into the icy waters forever long before the locations or equipment were booked for production.
Shame on HBO for treating its viewers like children and pushing this idiotic show. Utter trash.
i don't get it, season 1 is mediocre.. the hype is fake but actually work on people
