Useful tips and information about Matera
- The city of Matera is in the Italian region of Basilicata and nearby the region of Apulia (Puglia), in southern Italy.
- Matera is one of the oldest cities in the world! Historians still debate about the exact date people start living here, but it is estimated that Matera has been continuously inhabited for more than 10,000 years!
- Since 1993 the Sassi of Matera is registered as an UNESCO world heritage site
- Visit the Sassi of Matera. The literal translation for Sassi is stones and stands for the oldest part of the city of Matera, located on the Gravina ravine. Here you will find many original cave houses where people have lived for centuries.
Museums in Matera
- Cave Museum, entrance fee is 5 euros.
- MUSMA, entrance fee is 7 euros.
- Matera Olive Oil Museum (MOOM), entrance fee is 7 euros (book your tickets in advance!)
- Palazzo Lanfranchi, entrance fee is 10 euros.
Fun facts
- Matera has been the décor of several famous movies, such as The Passion of the Chirst (2004) and James Bond ‘No time to die’ (2021).
