Just liked to add, I think we should all be more considerate to delivery workers/ service/ f&b workers when there are delays, human errors or force majeure. I was taught by my parents, you can judge a person's true character by the way way they treat people in the f&b + service industry.
I really admired the host for taking on the experience of food delivery drivers.
The problem with other normal job is, low salary, many employers will undercut people on salary, and many will abuse employees.

I did before. It's very little money. After an exhausting, long and hot day, I earn at most $80-$100. The distance covered is inhumane! Would rather sit in an aircon environment to work, which is what I'm doing now. And i get paid medical leave being employed, instead of grab which does not even give a cent when I'm sick!
Food delivery isn't really meant to be a full-time job. I'm based in Norway, where Foodpanda is known as Foodora. I run my own company and earn about 80% of the salary I need each month, and I supplement the rest by working just a few hours a month as a delivery rider. I used to drive around in the evenings while listening to audiobooks, and now I do the same while getting paid.

I agree, given a choice, most delivery riders would choose another job but sadly, not many get the chance to do so. Quite a few are stuck doing this job forever.

Society problems will surface later when some of these riders do not have enough CPF contribution to buy a HDB flats. Authorities have to look into this.

So why can't they get an office and in-house job just like everyone else? This rubbish food delivery was never there during our parents generation and is causing more problems than it solves at this current time
If CPF means a lower take home pay then it's no certainty that gig workers would want it. 7 out of 10 riders make only about $2K/mth if they have to contribute $500 of their monthly income to CPF then they're left with not much to survive on, that's why parliament wants CPF component for all gig jobs so that it dissuades people away from doing gig jobs long term and be a salaried employee, the economy needs plenty of salaried employees without them the alternative would be to import more foreigners which then worsen societal issues.

I've been doing food delivery on bicycle for awhile now and it's really not easy. Especially for those who live uphill like the condos in Holland. We get large grocery orders sometimes too which make our bike wobble due to the heavy weight of the groceries.
What is average distance for bicycle? Did they give long distance?

Been doing this job since 2020 when I got retrenched, full time between 20-22 and then part time 2022 til today. The ability to go online any time and earn a little bit of cash really is life changing for me.
Hopefully those still doing it full time will be able to move onto more stable/better prospects. Keep pushing!

Food delivery service fill a niche service needed by consumers. It is also a good temporary transition option for those who are retrenched or someone who is waiting to get a job.

Why Macdonald's deliveryman nobody comments? Then grabfood, foodpanda, deliveroo became a concern for many.

I blamed it on the job market. Salary haven't been increasing over the years despite rising cost, GST, energy cost, rising interest rates and inflation.
I had a thought, despite all the factors that are impacting our living cost, salary have not gone up much. Whilst for people like Food delivery riders and PHV drivers, the rising costs is almost immediately factor into their earnings.
Raising fuel price? No problem, higher flag down rates and delivery fees. For white collar workers, still need to curry flavour bosses for the pathetic 1-3% increment yearly.
Lol taxi drivers also don't do anything special, just drive cars. Yet they have been earning a living in global cities for decades without problems, and can afford to support a family (modestly). Food delivery riders are here to stay and fill a gap in the labour market. For governments it's a godsend as they keep these guys employed who would otherwise struggle to earn a living.

My guys are earning 280$ - 350 for just merely 3hrs++ daily working 5 days a week. Do your maths for a month's salary. I was doing food delivery rider and had an accident 2yrs back, when into a black out for maybe 30sec when i wake up my ribs was fracture, laying on the road. after the accident i am left with tons of debts cause the fact when you cant work for 3months and bills are accumulating which then, I went into depression. so is food delivery really a good job I would say NO.

This is exactly why I don't do this except on the weekend for a bit. Let's say you get COVID and can't work for 1 week,that's 1 week's worth of salary lost as a delivery guy,but in a regular salaried job,I'd have paid medical leave + company claims

I worked in this type of food delivery in Russia , here it's called Yandex Eats. I worked on foot , as I don't have a driving license and I don't know how to ride a bicycle , I barely lasted 3 hours of my 4 hour first shift. It's a very tough job with low pay , orders can sometimes be heavy and it takes a strain on your health. Maybe by car or bicycle its easier , still you have a timer and refueling in a car will cost a lot in a day.

The platforms are paying much less to riders as time progresses and the motorbikers are constantly at risk, with many errant reckless drivers on the road , especially with delivery trucks and Malaysian lorries , as a smaller vehicle on the road you'd encounter many road bullies hence sometimes riders have no choice but to filter in between vehicles during a jam , no where is truly safe on the road . May God protect all riders on the road 🤲🏻

If 70% earning not more than three thousand dollars per month, then something is wrong with the income structure. They don't have CPF, annual leave, public holidays, medical leave, etc, and their maximum is sgd27/hr is not on par with US which is max at sgd36/hr, since both are first-world countries. Is high-risk employment, please pay them more.
The reason why delivery rider need to elevate their earning is becos they need to elevate to compensate their dented ego that comes with this job. Its not lucrative at all, wan to bluff who? If really lucrative they have already bought a tiny houses

So where is the data showing food delivery jobs able to hedge against inflation compared to other salaried jobs?
I blame it on foreigners (PR & work passes) causing competition for jobs, without them there's more jobs than actual Singaporeans, now the situation is that Singaporeans not only compete amongst themselves but also against foreigners in the job market.

Suspend riders who are reckless & cause accidents… so many of them rushing don’t care about safety
Lol food delivery is not a hustle. Everything else is. Nice propagandhi. 😂. The main selling point of food delivery, when it first started, was: you could work on your own time, without a boss, and without any need for any workplace wayang. When ubereats first came to SG, 5 years ago, you could work 9 to 10 hours a day and bring home 300$ cash per day easily. No need for cpf, no need for nothing. Degree holders were starting to complain already, how come spend so much and study, get a job, then food delivery still earning twice, or even thrice than me. Then they kicked out uber, took over the show, cut the pay back to peanuts, like everyone else's peanuts, and then now they flip prata and say riders have to work 15 to 16 hours a day, with no prospects. Well guess what, duh. I been through the whole show in every single food delivery company, since uber first came to SG, more than 5 years ago, so I know the whole story first hand. Most riders I knew, actually hate the wayang show of modern life, the workplace, and most were using this own time own target work, to save up and start their own small businesses, to eventually escape the rat race. But of course, big brother doesnt like it. Need the rats to be caged, to keep the machine greased, the other rats happy, and the wayang show running smoothly, and thus the story goes on. 😂
Grab started paying less to riders, a double order job usually had a 4.50 payout minimum so that means a minimum of $9.00 payout for 2 jobs done. Now they sum it up to about $7.80 for 2 jobs. Exploited over time ill say

Exploited? Did Grab unfairly force them to stay? Or is Grab a charity?
Unfortunately, only more pain is to come. Grab is still not profitable and they have said that they are going to reduce incentives to their Grab partners.
It’s not an easy industry to be in, if you find that the payout is too less, then stop working for them as I don’t think things will get better.

Interesting perspective however the reality is that no matter what gig work is an evolving job scope never seen before. There are a lot of grey areas under what sort of employment laws gig work actually falls under.
Also there are other industries with gig work but the most visible ones would be food delivery and phv.
Indonesian here... tried the orange-colored one before and here's my take:
- distance between where you receive the order and the store/restaurant is not billed, it's not too much if it's not too far (less than 1km hopefully). but sometimes the app would ask driver to go to much further store/restaurant if no other driver(s) are available in the area. there was a time that I was blamed for cancelling an order where the restaurant is more than 6 km away.
- there's no cost difference between delivering 200 grams of warm food vs 50 kilograms of rice. same goes for whether the weather is pleasant or thunderstorm happening. I believe the app developers are being lazy here...
- the distance-to-price increment is linear, which is really really unbalanced IMO. short-distance deliveries are obviously prefered since the driver most likely familiar with the land. long-distance deliveries are huge headaches... I'm sorry for not knowing the map of neighboring city... and in case you didn't know... I still need to return home, remember? would you give me delivery order to somewhere near my home? no? okay... guess I'm not bringing any cargo for my >20km travel back to home... /f
- the base rate is super weird... I thought the new law stated that the minimum per kilometer rate was 2200... yet when I calculate mine... it's always around 1850-1950. "Our rate is competitive, so don't worry about it." is basically what the Help Agent said when I asked about it...

On this Singaporean PR also do it full time . At one time , I talked to this malaysia guy but he is a Singapore PR , work 24 hours . Now a lot of singapore PR do food delivery full time . MOM did not check is it whether they got contribute CPF . Then we singaporean get lesser job for delivery . The singapore PR can give to other people who is really keen to work in singapore and change singapore for a better .

Steve should start out with bicycle instead of a e-bike. Doing delivery using bicycle are much more taxing on your body.
It is hard earn $$, and the fact that the company stop giving incentive that make ppl quit . Was talking to the Grab drivers since the rate was high all the time & he said they don’t get more $$ although the rate increased.. that’s why a lot of them go to other apps .. 🤦🏻♀️
Kind of stupid for customer to ask where their order is especially during lunch dinner peak or weekends.
Believe when full salary amount per month, being charge with cpf and income tax, soon nobody will gonna take up this job anymore..
Delivery Rider in Malaysia had it worst. The food price has been increase 4 times in year 2022 but the base fare still the same. Maintenance fee increase as result of minimum wage increase. And there's no surge fee in rainy days, and not to mention the maintenance fee have already increased. Now the minimum salary in Malaysia is Rm1500, so if rider manage to get RM2000 per month its the same as they work full time in retail or restaurant due to the maintenance.
The fare and incentive is getting lesser and lesser month by month. Which means we have to put in more hours in order to meet our daily target earnings. Do it only if this is a short-term transition to something better or if this is a part-time side hustle.
as a restaurant owner, sometimes i pity these guys (food delivery) because their income is too small per order and had to rely on tip. this is also delivery platform fault for giving too much discount to the customer and small payment to the actual guy who delivers your food. well, at least this happened in my country and idk about other region like EU and US
EDIT : in my country, these guys is NOT my employee but they joined the biggest transportation, food delivery, and logistic online platform called Gojek. similar to Uber in western countries but they offer many services not just transporting people.
GoJek Singapore suxks after have their drivers population.
In California, you can make between $20-40 in just 1 hour
well, it's really depend on distance you covered but 1 to 2 km is less than $1 USD here. especially if customer relying on promo and discount. and lot of customer actually prefer ordering food in this distance because they want to save money on delivery cost rather than buying from restaurant 20km away. the only way to trick this is take orders from rich neighborhood. quantity over quality. your income from single order might be low but rich neighborhood ordering online more often than other area. i know average rich people too lazy to go out and get food. they can just chill in the house while waiting for deliveryman to arrive.
for example nearby KFC, MCD, or Pizzeria is 10km away from my house. at this point it's better to cook for yourself instead of ordering food online to cover your daily expenses and if i want some air i can just go out, drive, and dine-in to these restaurants.
the point is, if you're working as deliveryman, avoid these area because you get less customer.

The quality in this video looks much different to the past episodes... There are off-focused shots, flat shots in the studio, bad lighting in some of the a-roll shots... Not to sure if this is representative of CNA's standards. The b-rolls are nicely taken though.
Just wanted to add: Merchants have to update their opening hours. one time i ordered from a shop that clearly stated that they’re open until 8pm. the rider reached at about 6-7pm and the shop was closed. i thought the shop needs to be open then they turn on the machine, no? lol. wasted my time, wasted the rider’s time. went all the way there and did not get paid. sent a feedback to the platform but idk if they compensated the rider. 🤔
In Jakarta there's already too many riders. Which means they're not getting decent money anymore like in the early days. All i hear is complaints now. But SG is small. Hopefully they won't see this problem.
Riding bicycle in singapore is a suitable choice because its small country. We dont do that in malaysia.
It really depends on your market. Nowadays it is hard coz of inflation and too many drivers.

Are we seriously talking about this again?! Yes you can make money fine...but it's demand and supply sensitive. I must say as a delivery rider for 4 years long...I really love this job because I'm close to 40 and I don't want to deal with office bullshit. But I also want to simulate my brain with challenges which delivery riding cannot offer. Also, this job is very risky. One guy actually met with an accident and permanently injure his spine.
Delivery jobs pay well, but as more people enter the field for lower pay, earnings will likely decrease. This could lead to worker shortages in other industries. For $4000 to $8000, rising a bike to keep fit at the same time. Flexible hours. This is too good to be true, but this is the fact as for now. In future it will be otherwise

It’s really a worrying trend when you see a lot of these food delivery riders are young people below 30.
Actually more worrying when you see delivery people above age of 55. These people are nearing retirement age (USA) and having to work gig jobs to make ends meet which is unfortunate.
Because when proper jobs are taken up by foreigners then only gig jobs are left for these locals.

I’ve worked in a few places where there are vacancies available and they specifically asked for locals to fill the vacancy but sadly there are no takers even though the salary offered are on par or even higher than the market rate. And we do get locals in,most don’t stay beyond one to two years.

Thank you CNA. Are you able to find out how clean are the public hawker centre utensils and trays? Seems like some stalls only wash them using 1 or 2 tubs of soapy water. And for trays, a quick wipe down with a cloth is usually the practice. How often do we come across trays that are oily and stained. Could this be one way that covid spreads? Thanks! Hopefully you can raise awareness on this for public hygiene and health

Compare to malaysia, this is an easy and lucrative job to afford to do things you want. They could go overseas to travel with this gig. Try working in malaysia with this, you would be survivable but not as easy as singaporeans. Is because their currency is high, lucky guys 😅

Ice-cream areadly.....those work more then 12hr get the pay lesser then what it say. Not means you work delivery earn super alot. Haven meet the eyes of per month earning without life of rest for everyday, it just a show that special arragement, just like grab ceo antony tan who ride bicycle say 5min of taking food, super special arragement. Why not take the true delivery guy acc and follow him the whole day, see how the work life is. Earn less, so they got to force themself rush here and there for the golden time lunch and dinner, after end of golden time, all got to wait or sit down waiting, seen and meet got member who can ask you, why come here, snack their rice bowl.
As someone who has done this job for this same company before, i can tell you for a fact that this job is not 'easy money' and the pay is not good. Only thing that is accurate is the flexibile timing.
Public transport/Freelance/Foodpanda/Grab/Gojek/Security Guard/Cisco/AETOS/F&B/Cleaner/3-6 month contract jobs for Singaporeans, high pay office PMET jobs for foreigners

It's a shameful business where the poor is exploited by the business mainly for profit and what is worse is that the authorities have vested interest in the business hence it is a vicious cycle..

Looks like delivery riders can earn more than a lot of the jobs on offer out there especially in the service sector and even some administrative positions. Wow…. the bosses of these low paying companies (SMEs) have a lot to learn if they want to attract manpower. I work 12hrs shifts as a technician and my salary can be lower than some of the hard working delivery riders.
The root cause is the huge influx of foreign workers, they are willing to work for as low as 1500 to 1800 per month, some ever lower, that's how many local SMEs bosses make huge money annually by exploiting cheap foreign labors.
The main issue is because of foreigners particularly Malaysian foreigners who's willing to accept lower pay to convert strong SGD back to weak RM. Very few employers will actually pay more to hire locals, it has always been the lowest asking salary gets the job, that's how businesses sustain their profit margins.
these jobs don't require any brains, while it may seem lucrative it comes to a quick end when one is incapacitated in an injury or when the business goes bust, or when riders are replaced by robots for delivery in time to come. Then these people will have no skills whatsoever to offer anyone. Modern day slavery

Good job, Steve. You are knocking some sense into youngsters watching this. This job has no future, no upskilling, no better career prospects, and mainly no cpf if they want to settle down in life and want to buy a house. Instead of wasting time here for pittance, the youth should learn some real-world skills like plumbing, electrical, carpentry, etc, which might one day make them their own boss. If Lee Mr. Kwan Yee was alive today he would be dead against this platform model. His vision of Singapore was a land of professionals, engineers, technicians, and skilled workers, for that he set up good universities, polytechnics, and ITE's... but how did we end up like this 😢
This is a multi facet problem where both the gov and these ppl doing such jobs as full time ,got to bear part of the blame, as to why the issue had turned out this way. Unlike other'Western country system' where the state bear much of the welfare ,if citizens require these support, this is not so for Singapore.
The gov had allow cheap labor to literally take over many jobs which now no longer require locals to fill.
Locals who shun job that they consider the pay being too low but not so for a Malaysians who cross over to do such jobs.
On the other hand, these local also shun jobs that deem too physically demanding and dangerous like construction, marine etc or too long hours like F&B and the pay also being too low. Not so for the many foreigners coming in, willing to do such jobs.
In the end, the locals who continue to do such delivery jobs will suffer when they nethier have sufficient CPF for both their retirement and housing. And once they have passed their 30s doing this, their ability to get a permenant jobs is even more remote. And needless to say, once they have reached their late 40s, they are almost considered not employable unless they become BOSSES themselves.
In the end, if the number of such folks are high, they would become part of the burden to the state and taxpayers too.

i drove for Grab and Uber before . Initially Grab throw in ridiculous incentives to get drivers on their platform. Once they beat the competition , they will take back all incentives . Same scenarios goes to Grab food i think , once other competition is down riders will have a hard time earning a living . And this job is like being your own Boss , after doing this job people will find holding a permanent job very hard to go through bcoz they lost their freedom.
Every country has its own “problem”.. whereas ours is food delivery, other like China is live online streaming. End of the day whose to dictate what’s a real “job”
