The Duke of Cambridge has carried out the Colonel’s Review at Horse Guards Parade, which acts as a rehearsal for next week's Trooping the Colour marking the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.
Around 1500 soldiers of the Household Division and The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery marched alongside 400 musicians from the Massed Bands on Horse Guards Parade for the second of two formal Reviews ahead of the ceremony in front of the Queen.

My neighbour was there today in the crowd and he said it was an unbelievable experience and could not describe it. I was so envious but he booked his ticket I think before Christmas. It was something he would never forget. I would have loved to have seen William on his horse. God Bless William and God Bless the Queen.
I was fortunate to witness the rehearsal in 2016 having gone to England to bring my daughter home from her study abroad program.
It was incredible to see. As Americans we don’t have such celebrations so it was quite a wonderful experience for me and my family.

I was there with my dad in 1991 it was spectacular I still have the photos of The Queen in her carriage she had a yellow outfit on that day .

Yes Prince Philip was the Colonel of the Grenadier Guards, Prince William is the Colonel of the Irish Guards. Note the Shamrock on the collar. Welsh have a Leek on the collar, Scots a Thistle, Grenadiers a Grenade and the Coldstreams have the Garter Star.

I wish I could be too! I lived in England for 12 years and I was privileged to see The Changing of the Guard at Windsor Castle while the Queen was in residence. I am trying to find where I can watch all the things here in America... PBS is usually good. We will just have to look for it.
There are 3 Trooping the Colour ceremonies, the Major Generals review always tales place 2 weeks before the Queen's review
and the Colonel's review takes place a week before, they are not rehearsals for next week
Tickets for next weeks birthday parade are £30, they are £15 for the Colonel's review and £10 for the Major General's review
They are identical but for the Queen's review there will be guardsmen lining the mall and there will be additional mounted officers in HM's review
@@lsmith9249 it says it is a rehearsal right there in the title. He has been appointed to take the salute for the Queen next weekend as she is not attending this part.
@@maribiddle5859 l got my information from the Army website and from The Household Division website that is the website for the 7 Regiments of all our Queen's Guard and it does not say they are rehearsals, tickets are not sold for rehearals in fact the stands are empty
and there are slight differences in each one, if it was a rehearsal they would be the same down to every detail

I was there when I lived in London and just caught some of the parade. Unforgettable - all the precision marching, the perfection of the uniforms just gave me goosebumps. Those horses are incredibly well-trained!! Nonhorse people cannot possibly know how amazing it is to see horses standing calmly and quietly while a large group of troops March directly at them!! Not one horse freaked. Wow!!!
They are trained by all the Household Cavalry trainers to go down paths at Hyde Park lined with Troopers banging garbage cans, whistles, and every conceivable noise maker they can find. The horse are trained to be used to it, but still the odd surprise sound can startle them, and they can rear or bolt. Usually to the rider's detriment.
And non horse people don’t realise that equestrian sports developed from military training. They dismiss them as non sports or as cruel. A well trained horse is a happy horse.
Before reading your comment I left one of my own along same line. Stimulus in that ceremony and possibility for an equine meltdown so great and they pull it off like pros, hundreds of horses.....
@@lori5455 I would recommend the two part series on UA-cam The Queens Cavalry. Shows every facet of the Household Cavalry, both Ceremonial and Practical. Also how riders are trained, new horses are trained and also the fact that there is no such rank as Sergeant in the Household Cavalry. It is truly fascinating and worth a watch.
Except Williams horse did not look right .very lethargic, very low head carriage sluggish gait. ,
There is something electric, grand, regal and unexplainable when you see such splendor. Men in uniforms parading in regiment, riding beautiful horses. It is a site that stirs feelings beyond words.
The Brits really know how to parade...the majesty of it all is glorious to watch! Even in a rehearsal!

Joan, The reason the parade "looks good" is purely because of the very practical military reasons behind every move and aspect of it. Without understanding what is actually going on doesn't detract from it as a colourful spectacle, but it's a bit like watching a foreign language movie without understanding a word of the script. Research this and it opens up a much wider appreciation of everything. Enjoy Saturday!

It is not a historic version of a modern military parade, like the recent one in Moscow, or the French 4th July Parade or "Rocketman" Kim's extravaganzas to show off to the World what the Nations latest military hardware is.

@Carol and a of these soldiers are frontline serving soldiers. They are all from the five regiments of guards, so their roles are front line soldiering, and ceremonial duties like this and guarding the royal palaces. 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴

@@elizagoodytwoshoes9140 what a strange comment! I loved the spectacle at the time, it’s stayed in my memory as one of my first experiences of living in London, so that I can still summon up the picture of it from over fifty years ago with all the other associations that that conjures up for me.

Interesting. I would have thought that Prince Charles would have Trouped the Colors. I am thrilled to see Prince William astride a horse that isn't Polo related. Prince William picked a nice dark Bay to Troupe on. He has all the Queen's horses to pick from.
He's commander in chief of the soldiers who are parading. That's why he's there. The horse was chosen for him by the master of the horse, making sure the horse has the experience and health to be able to stand for hours.
It's a rehearsal. Prince Charles will be at the next rehearsal, or even at the parade itself if the Queen is not able to attend.
Since I will never be able to go to England, I am now watching this again. I am planning to save everything regarding the Jubilee to view each time I feel the least bit depressed. What better way to lift one's spirits?!❤❤❤Jo.

Notice that Prince Willam had a couple of "outriders" assist him in timing his salute. The British Armed Forces always execute such outstanding drill and ceremony. It's a credit to every soldier on the parade ground. Well done...and then some!

It doesn't mean that there is anything particularly sinister about it, as you seem to be implying. All armies need training and discipline. The effect of letting well-armed but ill-disciplined young men loose on a civilian population can be seen in Ukraine. Would you prefer that ?
