    I bought a Heavy Duty Singer sewing machine, to use while I retained myself how to sew. Many schools use them because they are workhorses, and durable.

    I bought my machine a week ago and had been putting off using it because I was afraid of it!! Today I made myself sit down and make friends with my new toy. To start with, I couldn't even work out how to open the bobbin cover so I turned to on-line tutorials and fortunately found yours. Thank you so much, I can now get started on all those projects. Your tutorial is clear, thorough and very reassuring, perfect for those of new to heavy duty machines.

      Me too! OMG. I've watched so many videos on bobbin thread jamming and not a single person mentioned top thread position. This totally explains why my machine works fine when I use a super size white thread (spun vertically) and jams up with blue thread (spun horizontally). Holy crap. I can't count the number of hours I've spent trying to fix this issue.

    Kevin- A most sincere thank you for taking your time and effort to spread your knowledge. You alone have personally saved me an incredible amount of time, frustration and money I would have spent taking my machine in for constant repairs due to minor issues I have been able to repair on my own! You are a natural teacher, your directions are always concise and easy to understand. You explain things in a basic step-by-step method that doesn’t make me feel like an idiot yet is simple enough for even the most amateur seamstress to follow and execute. I especially appreciate that you even list the tools needed for each repair and where to purchase them. Thanks to you, not only am I able to keep my own machine in working order but my friend was trying to make masks and was having tension issues which I was able to fix for her thanks to your videos! (We were both amazed that I could actually do this as I’m not exactly a “mechanical kind of girl! 😉) Thank you again. Your videos have been invaluable.

      Rebecca Pope The extra spool pin also used for twin needle sewing or to hold a spool of a different size vertically should you want. Either pin can be used to put a spool onto it to sew with, but if you are a new sewer, stick with the instructions here first! By the way, always turn that big wheel on right end of machine TOWARD YOU when getting bobbin thread to come up from the bobbin case area to meet the needle thread , and give yourself a good 5 inches of BOTH threads pulled gently UNDERNEATH the presser foot and back of machine to avoid thread coming out of needle when you lower presser foot and turn the hand wheel toward you again to lower the needle into your fabric. Never operate machine with needle in up position or with presser foot up, snd NEVER turn that hand wheel away from you, especially once the needle has come into contact with your fabric. Hold BOTH bobbin thread and needle thread while turning hand wheel toward you and sew a couple stitches keeping threads pulled taut. This keeps threads from falling down into the feed dogs and causing "nesting" and a loud crunching JAM. Very bad for machine even though you can fix it in a few minutes. (Can break your machine or throw timing off in rare cases when machine operator causes this error, but quite avoidable with care taken not to let it occur in the first place). Hope these tips are of help to you.

    I have a Singer 4452 that I have been using for a few months with no problems until now. When I am starting to sew on a piece that has a fold and beginning at the fold the thread gets a top birdsnest and the cloth starts to bunch up. If I begin opposite of the fold It will go along smoothly even over the fold. I have made a slight adjustment of the presser foot pressure but it still does it. Could it be the thread tension? Or something with the feed dogs?

    • @kevinsews
      @kevinsews  4 роки тому

      Scott Tisdale Use a scarp piece of fabric to start then join your piece of fabric right next to it and leave a small gap so you can cut the snip the thread between the two pieces when done.

      I hope that will show you that Amazon is a piss poor eBay wanna be!! That said, you notify the seller and complain but first contact Amazon for return of product. I don't care if you just opened the box - if you read your manual and you are sure it is not an operational error ( meaning YOU did something incorrectly), then you need to return it for a full refund. Jeff Besos is a billionaire and it's his company that is full of sellers and many sell bad product. You get your refund and buy your sewing machine from an authorized dealer!! Do not even buy thread from Amazon who treat their workers like slaves and do not care about customers. You stay on them for that refund when they direct your call overseas. You be courteous but be strong in your conviction until you get your refund (NOT AN EXCHANGE!!). Good luck.😊

    Great video! I too, had my thread spool on sideways. My issue (and I hope this hasn't been addressed earlier, and if it was, I apologize), my machine had a wonderful straight stitch when I first purchased it 7 months ago, now the straight stitch is more slanted. Is this a common occurrence with these machines (I have the 4452)? I have tried re-threading, different bobbin, tension adjustments, etc, nothing seems to get that nice straight top-stitch.

    • @TheJudeJane
      @TheJudeJane 4 роки тому +3

      Karen Whiteway Make sure you raise your presser foot all the way to the UP position BEFORE you thread your machine. Why? To open all tension discs so they can RECEIVE the thread. Then you can lower the presser foot if you need to AFTER you thread the machine. Thread your needle. Threading MACHINE and threading the NEEDLE are two separate processes. Hope this helps. Give it a whirl!! 😊

      Grymme Göta This machine takes metallic thread, all purpose polyester thread, silk thread, 100% cotton thread -- you say one thread works, but depending on thread used, needles come in various sizes and types. The problem is NOT the thread but the needle you use WITH the thread weight. Heavier threads need a larger eye in the needle to smoothly flow through it. Google needle sizes and types and try to avoid Amazon because they have sellers who are selling counterfeit supplies there. Shop locally or contact Singer directly on their own web site.

I hope you can get a timing adjustment video. Also, a friend borrowed my machine and didnt realize she had to adjust the stitch width for thicker fabric layering. The needle shredded my feeder plate and now my needle wont go to the right. I can push on the needle and and it will move to the right, but it wont stay there, it bounces back. Any advise for fixing this? I have to order a new plate so if there are any parts that would be helpful to have on hand can you give me a list? I live on Cyprus (the island) and there are no technicians here. I have to send it to Greece for any type of repairs, and the shipping alone is more than the machine. @Kevin Sews may be you can help me figure this out : my top thread is looping on the bottom side of my material. . . I am giving my machine to my niece as her first learning machine. I unscrewed the presser foot pressure adjustment thinking It was one of the screws to remove the face plate would that cause my top thread to loop on the bottom?

    • @kevinsews
      @kevinsews  4 роки тому

      No, that just adjust the pressure on the foot. Thread looping at the bottom is a lack of tension in the needle thread. Raise your foot and grab ahold of the thread on top of the machine; then pull on the thread through the backside of the needle creating tension. Then lower your presser foot and sew some stitches. If this doesn't fix it your machine probably needs a good cleaning. It is amazing what a small piece of lint can do to the quality of stitches your machine produces.

      Using #69 on this machine can be a challenge. I did it a few years ago helping a friend on the road. We had to tighten the top tension www.kevinsews.com/download/SingerHeavyDutyServiceManul.pdf see page 22 on how to tighten the thread tension. Then we had to tighten the bobbin tension to match. After that we had to baby it a bit to get the first stitch to catch and then he was off sewing his leather seam.

      ushchent Yes, you can use both types of bobbins; however, there is a built-in magnet located under the throat plate and I think that's why Singer recommends the plastic bobbins (which they provide in the packet that comes with the machine). I personally prefer the metal bobbins because they accommodate more thread.😊
