  • After our previous video looking at the most accurate Outdoor GPS Unit we took the winner of that video (Garmin GPSMAP 65s) and put it against the SatMap Active 20.

What is the expected accuracy of each of the units. Comparing each to the other is one thing, but actually how accurate is each unit as compared to the known position of some base station?

      Thanks for your question.
Your GPS tells you how accurate it is, if you look on your satellite page it gives you this info. This will vary from 1.5m - 3m.
      I hope this helps.

Superb video and a very fair comparison I thought. Have a Garmin GPSMAP 64SX and a Satmap Active 20....the Satmap is my go to device as prefer the larger screen. May be time to sell the Garmin and sign up for one of your Satmap courses now that you have added the Gloucestershire venue to the list !! May learn something about the Satmap I never knew.....

Hi, thanks for the video. In GPSMAP 65S there is an option to increase the tracking points (is set to "normal" by default)

Thanks for that, i will take a look at that and see if it makes it any better. Have you found it has?

@@ukgpstraining Unfortunately, all the video showed was you get more track points with the default settings in the SatMap than with the default settings in the Garmin. Whether a larger track log file is useful or not depends what you plan to do with the file afterwards.
In the Garmin settings, the track points can be "automatic" (the default, it uses both changes in time and changes in distance), or manual for changes in time or changes in distance.
Within automatic, there are five levels of recording. Obviously, recording more points means a larger data file.
The manual settings are any time (in seconds/minutes) or distance down to 10m (0.01km).
I don't know how the SatMap Active-20 decides to record trackpoints, though the old Active-10 model was every 1 second in normal mode, and every 4 seconds if power-saving. The Garmin could be set to "time" and "1 second", which would match this old SatMap value (which might be the same as the current device uses).

@@ncliffe4786 Thanks for your feedback on this, I was trying to compare 'out of the box' but many people (including the tech team at GPS Training) has pointed out that I can change the tracepoint settings.

I took my garmin etrex10 and checked the accuracy of it against mile markers on the highway. At 20mi it was 99.9% accurate. Same with my new Garmin instinct. It was 100% accurate at 20 miles. On a 7.5mi trail loop the instinct read 0.3mi longer than the etrex10. Not sure which is right but my hunch is the watch on the arm which is swung during walking thru the measurement off.

Thanks for sharing this with us, this video came about after we dis our first 'how accurate is a GPS' video (ua-cam.com/video/YgFdbmQBi18/v-deo.html), but we never have tried an eTrex 10, we should do in the future. As you can see our tests are just a little bit of fun.

It would be very interesting to see the accuracy of the Garmin Glo 2 linked with a tablet against your favorite Device. I am sure many people will be very suprised to see how accurate this system actually is compared with expensive GPS units of 3 times the value.
The Glo 2 accesses GLONASS which allows it to connect up to 24 more satellites than devices that rely on GPS alone. The Glo 2 locks onto satellites approximately 20% faster.
The Glo 2 updates its position information at 10 times per second, That is up to 10 times more often than the GPS receivers in mobile devices.
And the first question everyone asks is " But this is not capable of being used out of cell range"?
This $200.00 USD system functions in the most remote areas imaginable and offers excellent mapping capabilities with far more information than a handheld GPS offers.
I presently use this system for search and rescue work in Canada in extremely remote areas.

We have never managed to get our hands on one, if we did it would be interesting.
Does it give an accuracy figure on the device at all?

@@ukgpstrainingThe accuracy of the Garmin Glo 2 is stated at 3 meters but it can often get to 1.5 meters.

Wanting to get a GPS unit for the our land we had surveyed. There is not cell survive at the land. We want to be able to walk the land and know where the property lines are. We done want to spend a ton of money on a GPS. Especially when we will not be using it only for this. My question is what unit would you recommend?

For what you are wanting, I would encourage you to look at either the Garmin GPSMAP 65s (if you are on budget - £324.99) gpstraining.co.uk/collections/handheld-gps-units/products/garmin-gpsmap-65s or a Garmin GPSMAP 66sr (if your budget stretches - £449.99) - gpstraining.co.uk/collections/handheld-gps-units/products/garmin-gpsmap-66sr

Do these units have some kind of super accuracy mode to getting coordinates of single non-moving position. How many inches are they off? My phone is off about 10 feet, super inaccurate.

    • @ukgpstraining
      @ukgpstraining  2 роки тому +1

Usually you will get a 6ft accuracy with an Outdoor GPS unit. Some of the more top end units have something called 'waypoint averaging' where you can leave a GOPs in a position for a short length of time and it gives you a far more accurate reading, I don't know the exact figure but i doubt it will be inches, more like feet.

really good video BUT... on a motorbike riding 50 miles per hour vloggers have better sound than you. It's really shame how easily a good video can be ruined. TBH it's crap at times. Please please please invest in a decent microphone. Your viewers will appreciate it. Still liked!
