I'm a Bruin fan, and Toronto was the much better team in the series. The difference was the goaltending. Until Toronto fixes that, any other trades amount to shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic. I know Ullmark will be traded this summer, and T.O. should try and get him. I think the money works with an Ullmark & Carlo for Marner deal, which could be decent for both sides if they are willing to deal within the divison.

Near the end Darius mentioned how Keefe mentioned that the Leafs had such a high turnover over the years. But the reason they had such a high turnover was because they never fixed the core 4 cap issue once and for all. If they had more money to spread around they might have kept Kadri, Hyman, Kapanen and many others.
Well said... they are/were too focused on the core 4 and freeing some cap will enable them to keep a more diversified and thus more powerful Leaf team as a whole. I loved and miss guys like Hyman and Kapanen...

There was a high turnover because they were Never Built properly in the first place. Dubas’s first mistake was signing Tavares when the Leafs were the 3rd highest scoring team in the NHL. Then he wasted 2 yrs thinking skillful Smurfs were the way to go, along with passing on a trade in 2018 that would have brought Pesci or Slavin from Carolina for Nylander. That signing of Nylander killed any chances of a Simmons type player at the 2019 deadline. Nothing concrete will be accomplished until Shanahan is done. I’d give George McFee a call and see how much cash he’d need to come to Toronto as President. Management has been the main downfall of this team for the better part of 2 decades. As for the core 4, I don’t begrudge them their money. Management didn’t have to give it to them but Dubas did and I bet Treleving was forced to pay Nylander.
@@guyh.4121 I'd say management has been a problem with this team for 57 years and counting. Even when Cliff Fletcher put together that great team in the early 90's ownership was a problem because of how Harold Ballard's estate left things.
@@carson1861 Hyman never performed in the playoffs with the leafs. 32 playoff games 5 goals and 13 points. He has become amazing in Edmonton no doubt.

For anyone that wants marner to stay, ask yourself an honest question. What has he done in the playoffs over the last 7-8 years?
You wouldn’t nominate him for the heart let alone the con smythe.
I don’t want to hear oh the regular season he scored “x” amount of points, I’m talking playoffs, when did he elevate his game to Gary Robert’s ,Doug Gilmour or Wendell Clark level of playoff performance.
MM played 57 playoff games, scored 50 points. That's not shabby.

Marner has a better points per game than either Willy or Matthews and a way better plus / minus than Willy
the problem with Keefe was that he was a former player, and a grinder, meaning he came with a mindset that star players were above him, no way he could be their boss. whereas, someone like berube is respected by stars and grinders.

poor Trev, his undoing was Goudreau walking, then Shanaplan hands him the same issue with Mitch. trade value, etc. everything 'circles back' to Marner. Petterson would be ideal, Jenner and Provorov would fill a couple of gaping holes, no way for a 30 year-old goalie. Talbot for 2 or 3 years. they should over-pay for Pesce. still enough for Duclair, Stephenson or Zadarov

Yes it's the core 4 but look at the Oilers the bottom 6 are not panning out.

Leafs need a top notch goalie. Woll is definitely in the mix but is often injured.

Guys lets be real here. The core 4 will be back again next season. Tavares comes off the books at the end of next season , they will do their tap dancing to sign some new players , Marner wont sign his extension until the end of next season just like Nylander.
The leaf dont need both 11M players gone. they really do just need 1. and thats going to be Tavares next season.
What the leafs will do is look for the pieces they need to go for it in 2025-2026.
They will sign a guy like Brett Pesce, They will get a goalie like a Kuemper(with salary retained) or a guy like Chhris Driedger , a guy who can platoon with Woll.
And they will resign one of Domi or Bertuzzi , probabaly Domi. and they will again try and do their best to have as deep of a roster as possible.
I will believe it when it happens

Leafs change their roster significantly every year.
Changes:
1) Move Mathews to the wing
2) JT play 3rd line Centre
3) Trade Marner or implement a Marner rehabilitation program focusing on back checking every rush
4) move Morgan by protecting him in the 3 to 5 defence man position
If Tavares and Marner waive they can be retained on or even 2x retained on to fit any team even cap restricted teams since they both only have 1 year left on contract paying other teams to retain won't be hard.
Tavares won't wave, and he will resign for half the price. That's when we will do well.

I honestly think that it's going to be tuff to trade marner and Tavares with there no movement clauses if marner agrees to be traded can the leafs get a number 1 dman or goaltender it depends what the other team is offering and that team would want to sign marner to an extension and as far as Tavares the leafs would have to eat half his salary to move him plus he has to agree to a trade tuff decisions for the leafs coming up but a change is needed the formula ain't working
The formula ain't working because you can't have 4 guys eating up half your salary cap as currently constructed the hope is they can move 1 or 2 of these guys bring in some new blood and playoff performers plus hopefully knies minten plus cowan can evolve as world class players and steer this team in a needed new direction with matthews and Nylander hopefully leading the way
Obtain a solid starting Goalie, then 2 solid stay at home Defencemen.
Trade Tavares and give the captaincy to Mathews and also trade Marner and Reilly.....

You need guys like Marner to make the playoffs. The leafs problems go way beyond one player.The defense and goaltender are a bigger problem.
Leafs have skill, but no will.
Their playoff record the last 8 years have proven that.
Losing to “inferior” teams in the first round shows their lack of will,heart,grit,discipline,tenacity,determination,commitment,focus,accountability,mental toughness,etc…

Changes are definitely coming firstly trade marner to Calgary for markstrom and Anderson fills 2 huge holes with the leafs sign UFA d men pesce and zadorov solves more on the defence and see if there is a deal out there for Tavares also resign domi and bertuzzi call up Cowan and minten full time

Teams win and lose as a unit. This year the entire unit wasn't good enough. Blaming one player doesn't make any sense. Getting the most out of each player is a coach's job. If you don't understand that then team sport isn't for you.

Mats Sundin is seen as the best Leafs Player from the mid 90’s until 2015 or later… Marner is 15 points a year better than him. Seriously, perspective is needed. Mitch, Austin, Willy are the core. We finally have some ability to develop young guys; Knies, Robertson, McMann, all look promising at a low, controllable $ value for a few years. Just need to fill in the Mid to upper tier and role guys effectively. Horses on the back end, and a goalie you can trust. The Mitch hate is ridiculous and predictable.
What if they don’t make the playoffs? Florida; Boston; Detroit; and Tampa Bay.
Detroit is definitely coming and they not just gonna make the playoffs , the Wings r gonna become a powerhouse here soon , the team is full of heart / passion and do not give up period

Nylander and Matthews aren't going anywhere. You won't get anything for Tavares - maybe you even keep him if the rest of the money makes sense. Unless Marner is traded, the team is running it back. Trading Marner further shifts the tone of the type of team the Leafs will be as well after the Berube hire - and the type of team we are aspiring to be should be clearer if not obvious (although I'm not holding my breath). But.... I would not settle on a Marner deal for a "good enough" return - I would want very close to full value back or no dice. He is a hell of a talent and everyone f*king knows it and you're going to f*king pay for it or else f*k off you are insulting me. He just doesn't work on this team but very likely could be the perfect missing ingredient elsewhere.
I don't know what Brian Burke is smoking by indicating he thinks the problem with Marner is that he's having a slow start - I'm really not seeing that. I think it's maturity, growth, and an understanding of your role at that moment. I believe Marner is behind the curve on that. Hopefully, he's not too much in Treliving's ear on that point if he in fact wants to keep him. And Burke has done some questionable stuff as GM like flying to the US to search for free hockey players underneath college desks. That aside, I do mostly agree with a lot of what Burke points out over the years and his general philosophy about the brand of hockey he prefers (not that you care but that's my stance nonetheless).
As for Matthews, he's by far the highest skilled player with arguably the best shot in history - but he is not your tip of the spear. You don't want him captaining this team in the "follow me into battle everyone" sense of being a captain. It's just not who he is and that's fine. Place him in a more natural role geared to who he is as a player and I bet he'll excel there. Either give the C to someone else or rethink the leadership dynamic. Hopefully his ego won't dictate that he be something he's not or take on some responsibility he's not suited for. He's still very young and likely feels a tonne of pressure playing in Toronto with his skillset. This could be a problem.
I hear we need better defense, better goal tending but with the core making so much money the team is handcuffed. Marner and Tavares last year of contract won't get much just a salary dump. Mathews and Nylander you would get the most.

Ummmm....a coach change will not make a damn bit of difference. He will not amass 46+ wins. He will not surpass the points in a season. The coach was NOT the problem. The entire front office. Treliving is a horrible gm. The former Arizona gm lost blake wheeler for nothing!!! He drafted horribly. He then went to Calgary signed a #1 goalie then imploded the team. He is pure trash.

Just read Vegas is super interested in Marner… it’s a great fit and they make an ideal trade partner because they’ll be tight against the cap trying to resign there free agents and will be looking to replace players who leave which we could possibly take advantage of.
My mock trade is Marner to Vegas for Theodore, Barbashev, 1st and 4th round picks.
