absolutely love nieky holzken, i really try to mimic his style and he really was the person that got me into kickboxing, love when people put respect on his name like u gabriel
He's a top notch fighter and a good style to mimic. Smart choice especially if you can incorporate a few more basic body/head kicks. That would be deadly.
His style is effective but a bit too static imo. Therefore he mosltly loses when he fights top tier kickboxers. Like when he fought Doumbe, Ouzgni, Kyshenko, Smith etc.
Rico is easy. He is so good because he is very big, very fit. He is physically the best. But for me he is an athlete and not a warrior, that makes him a bit boring for me
Very well realised list, highlighting all his key attributes, especially the left hook which he seems to catch/drop everyone with at some point. The timing on the counter left hook when the opponents right glove touches his guard is amazing.
5 things that make tenshin and takeru so good! Also can you make a video on the cross counter and the left hook counter to the right hand? I know you covered a bit of the left hook here but a more expansive vid on the technique would be cool
Gabriel I had the luck to have a seminar back then I think in 2009 or something with Nieky Holzken at our thaiboxing gym in Germany and it was freaking cool, but to be honest I actually "learned" more with this video. You are really good in explaining a technique, why use it, when use it, the do's and don'ts, breaking down mechanics etc. I think if I had a trainer like you I would have gone professional just because it would be so fun to train and learn. This channel is a diamond especially during lockdown, thank you a lot.
I recently discovered your channel after getting back into training and really appreciate the amount of respect you show. I'm discovering that my sytle is very much like Nieky Holzken's... while clearly not being a championship fighter. For example, I do the same kind of shell where my elbows almost touch my hips but my hands are up high. Also, the tension and relaxation thing is a part of my foundation art, Tang Soo Do. It's called Shin-Chook which means relax-tense. You can think about it like the "shin" being the relaxed part of throwing the technique and the "chook," a fast exhale like any other noise you'd make while punching something, the tensing just prior to impact. It helps to practice this kind of like Tai Chi at first to develop a feel for it, where your tension is, and where you should be relaxing. Without getting into any anecdotes, this is a great skill to develop and it has literally saved my ass in the real-world.
Awesome video with great breakdowns! I love doing the Grab & Pull technique that Nieky does. Its very effective. I would like to see a breakdown on Marat Grigorian or Josh Jauncey.
Please do Andy Souwer and Tyrone Spong. Two dutch legends.. maybe a bit oldschool but Rayen Simson is also a forgotten legend who was the man back in the day.
when I throw my left hook I lean about 70% forward and off center as you said but by twisting my lead foot and hip into the shop I can generate more power as opposed to just planting. Perhaps this is more of a boxing technique but I've always thrown it that way!
Great video! There is a ton of stuff to unpack here. I think it’s always good to have a couple of unusual techniques ready to go even if they are just distractions. Spinning techniques fall in this category. Throw one in early in a round and your opponent will have to watch for it. It opens up whole new feinting opportunities. And there’s always the puncher’s chance it’ll land solid. I like to throw a front leg head hook kick at people for this reason. I don’t expect to do any damage with it but it’s fast, I can hit from range and non-karate people aren’t used to seeing kicks coming from that angle and now they have to worry about it. Of course, it’s not as effective against people who keep a high guard but a lot of people don’t keep a high guard on the outside. The last section is basic trapping. Anyone who has spent any time practicing Wing Chun or Kali will recognize it instantly. It’s very effective against the high guard. What Nieky does is a variation on the Wing Chun Lop Sau. George Foreman is another great boxer who used basic trapping to great success. Watch his fights with Frazier. He’d pull or push arms out of the way to clear a path for a punch. It’s much easier to do on fighters who stand and engage than it is on fighters who move a lot.
Loving all the videos man, started trying your shadowboxing workouts man it hurts good! Think you could do one on how Dave Leduc is so dominant in Lethwei? Keep up the good work I love seeing you show up in my feed! OSU
I've watched all of these episodes in this series and they are amazing. But I was just wondering would you be able to make a video of how to fight more like yourself. I just think that would be interesting because across every video you make you put little puzzle pieces in the video, But I wanna see it put together thank you.
You would be a great boxer as well Gab. You are like rhe perfect fighter. Smart and well thought out, as well as extremely technically sound with the power and speed and accuracy to back the rest of it up. 😊👊
Great instructions as always! Liver shots are a fundamental part of signature strikes, I do like to shift slightly to the left to be off-center, I also like to shoot to the liver when shifting completely to the right!! I am full-on Dutch-style kickboxing, high tight guard with elbows stuck to my body!
My list is very large. Right now I'm getting through all the initial requests. He will be in there. Just another 10 guys to cover first. I've got some work to do 🙂
Holzken has a number of advantages that lead him to being so good: - reach and long arms - great defence - forward pressure fighter never moves backwards - relies on his technique, is a power puncher - great counter striker
Very interesting about his guard. I trained with Jwp and he told me to make my self small because easy to check kicks when fighting a big kicker, as fought some best kicker in must thai.I thought weird at the time but now in use it a lot vs big kickers, . Very similar to what you were saying about Nicky, I use long guard a lot definitely help me change it up, very god insight. Think you would make very good coach, 👊🏼🙏
Can you do a video showcasing Sean O'Malley's striking? Idk why, but it's like a mix between boxing and taekwondo, I feel... I feel like his style, along with being Switch instead of just Southpaw/Orthodox, is an extremely effective fighting style...
Gabriel, You have great content and quality. Please keep it up. I can't believe your channel doesn't already have more views and subscribers. Hopefully, it's just a matter of a bit more time. (I found it because of Modern Martial Artist.)
Can you make a video on Alex Poatan Pereira pls!! or cedric doumbe or russian kickboxing styles like artem vakhitov and artem levin! fan from malaysia!!

Same bro. As Gabriel says he has a great style to mimic. Solid fundamentals, forward pressure and impeccable defence.

I appreciate that!
Could you do one on Samar payakaroon? Maybe a little old school?
I'd love a Saenchi one. Cedric Doumbe would be good. A rico Verhoeven would be good. Thanks for these I work these as drills as I watch
Second on Doumbe. He’s my other second favorite kickboxer.
solid three picks

That left hook counter looked on point against JWP yesterday.
Please cover Tyrone Spong next! His Glory version was an absolute beast!
Love da Spong. Even when he wrecked our national hero, Nathan 'Carnage' Corbett....
He lost badly in mma against Kharitonov, who's really good tho, but was painful to see.
5 things that make tenshin and takeru so good! Also can you make a video on the cross counter and the left hook counter to the right hand? I know you covered a bit of the left hook here but a more expansive vid on the technique would be cool

Nieky is my favourite fighter to watch because his style is just incredibly smooth.
new favorite channel, could you breakdown Stephen Thompson?
Yo I asked for this list like 2 days ago and it’s got the same thought out into it as every other one of these you’ve done. You’re the man!
