They knew what they had as a pass rusher but they were trying to develop him more as a more complete linebacker. Once he went off his first game against Buffalo there was no way he would stay on their practice squad.
I heard he was a significant liability against the run and wasn't good enough in coverage to compensate. Of course, when he sacked Josh Allen twice in five snaps, he wasn't coming off that field on a passing down.
I watched James closely in the preseason because he was a Deion Sanders product and all I heard was "extremely gifted athletically but raw". James displayed the work that he needed to do to make it in the league, but I also knew he was exceptionally driven both by himself and by his family. He progressed faster than I had anticipated but I cannot tell you how excited I was seeing 59 on the field, then breaking a chip in each sack against Allen put him over immediately.

Some of the pass rush techniques he’s shown have been crazy. On one sack, he does some kind of jump-skip looking move; it completely melted the brain of the O-tackle who was supposed to block him, dude just froze in place like a statue. And he’s constantly getting around guys by putting his hands on the ground, no one is getting low enough to block that.

I think what has happened here, is that defensive edge players have gotten taller and longer over the past few years, to battle heavier and longer O-tackles. The Tackles have gotten so big and tall, that they can't play with power when leaning down to block a low, powerful, ultra quick guy like Houston. He just gets lower and has so much strength and quickness, that the O-tackles can't stop him. I haven't seen anything like this since James Harrison. Steelers days. just a freak. OUR freak. Lions brass is killing it in the draft. I can't wait to see what we do in this coming draft. Hope has been replaced by production. Truly amazing to see!

Houston is doing jump stalls and stutter steps during his rush attempts to get past the LT. Totally throwing off offensive linemen timing on in their step progression, foot placements, and arm extensions. What rookie has come in the league and immediately does stuff like this?
You can tell he is a student of the game. Great pass rushers from the late 70s and early 80s did stutter steps moves all the time i.e. Bubba Baker, Harvey Martin etc

McNeil and Buggs are fine dts but both seem better suited at nose tackle although Im convinced that if Alim McNeil slimmed down he could create more interior pressure because his first step is very quick.
