The One Thing EVERY Guitar Player Needs (in my opinion)

- Fuzz is hands down my favorite guitar effect, its capable of so much but a lot of guitar players steer clear of the fuzz world because they think its only good for one thing. That couldn't be further from the truth so in today's episode of Gear Talk, I'll show you some of my favorite ways to use fuzz pedals.

Whats your favorite fuzz?
What’s the best fuzz for the hx stomp or iridium? I’ve been using an If 6 was 9 Fuzz by Solid Gold FX. It’s slick with my real amps but not so much with digital
I really like the EHX Triangle Big Muff Reissue. It has that mid range growl I can use in hard rock and metal. The tone knob is extremely useful on it, going from very dark to very bright.
Velcro
For the value ($50) I like the Rusty Fuzz from TC Electronic
isle of tone haze 67, Best fuzz sound I've ever heard in my life
Rhett, your channel is dangerous. Nobody else is explaining such detailed concepts in such an understandable way, and you're causing a lot of us guitarists to think we are way better than we actually are.
Seriously awesome content, keep it up !!!
He's far beyond dangerous. I feel I haven't enough fuzz pedals.
this channel is now called The Fuzz Evangelist.
Maybe “the Fuzzangelist”! 😋
The Fuzz Facts Series. Great stuff Rhett
I just got the Russian Big Muff a week ago. I paired it with the Durple, and it was magical. I didn't expect them to work that well together.
Play the Russian thru a Marshall DSL40 with Vintage 30 UK speakers. You’d never use another rig again
The Russian plays best with all types of setups. Is it the best sounding fuzz?...No...but it's so forgiving, doesn't cut the mids or bass too hard, plays well with other pedals and multiple instruments...it's my main fuzz, does what I need and doesn't fight back too much like a lot of fuzz pedals do.
Fancy seeing you here, lad. I've quite enjoyed some of your videos. It's surprisingly cool to know of the shared interests. Fuzz out.
@@markgarcia8253 Yeah I nearly bought a DSL40 when I was trying out a SGFX If 6 Was 9 BC183. I couldn't afford it tho. Bought the Fuzz. Sounds great through the amps I own.
Putting a Vintage 30 in my little Laney Cub12r next week.
Rhett: Fuzz, does more than just Hendrix!
Me, years deep into doom and sludge: Yeah
Amp go BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
*plays a drop tuned riff at less than 50bpm for twenty minutes*
@@indigotheindieghost7214 I’m more Hendrix & Eric Johnson than doom & sludge. Although Doom & Sludge is great band name!
Great video Rhett!
Thanks Keith!
I love how u give so much ideas for guitar players in ur videos. Thank You!
Man. That slide tone was beautiful. Pure magical sound and playing as well.Loved this Video but then pretty much all the Videos you put out is very well articulated and presented. Cheers mate
So I’ve been lurking around your videos for a few months and I really find your content compelling and your presentation style unique and authentic. I finally decided to gift myself your Tone Course as both a Christmas present to me and a show of support to you. There are lots of great guitar channels on the Tube that I enjoy but you’ve found just a perfect pocket, a niche that lets you coincide with the Ricks and Martys and Pauls and Tims while augmenting and enhancing the guitar content universe instead of simply competing against it. Bravo! Keep it up!
I like the 2:1 aspect ratio, looks better.
It still is letterboxed into 16:9 though?
Hmm.. makes me wonder how youtube would handle it if it wasn't.
I still like the 4:3 better @Rhett Shull. Leaves less dead space and is a bit easier to watch
@airscorp on ultra-wide cellphones it isn't letterboxed in fullscreen, if I understand your comment. Pixel 3/4/5, Samsungs, iphone 10/11/12.
Personally I don't watch UA-cam on anything other than my phone anymore. So the 2:1 aspect is awesome for me. Especially appropriate with guitar, getting more of the fretboard in shot. But I can see it definitely being personal taste/viewing situation what works for others.
I also like this aspect ratio better. we can see the whole guitar neck and headstock in frame at the same time as right elbow. without him having to hold the guitar at a 45 degree angle. looks cool too with the gear behind him in the shot too.

After years of watching your videos you’ve converted me from a fuzz naysayer to a believer in there awesomeness. Got my first fuzz last week ( an eqd hoof reaper) and found octave fuzz is my new favorite thing! So thanks for that! Also your voice over is sounding extra crisp in this video, almost like your close mic’d, I dig it!
Thanks, man! Great Video, great guitarist knowledge! Love the fact that You put the guitar tone in the band mix. So important!
0:18 You got me with that bass hook. It took less than 20 seconds to convince me. Well done, Rhett.
Great video, and posted the day of my birthday! Thanks for the present dude, I might buy some more for myself out of the list :D
I'm in love with your live fuzz tone with Jesse Wilson. Huge sound dude
Rhett, your use of fuzz had a lot to do with my deciding to give it a try. Bought my first fuzz pedal a couple of months ago, a JHS Smiley. Your video review of JHS's Legends of Fuzz line helped me make the decision. I am very happy with the Smiley. Your channel/videos played a big part in it all. Much appreciated!
Congratulations. Most videos on fuzz over complicate and over explain the pedals, but this just concentrated on the sounds and where they are useful. Really useful primer.
Amazing video Rhett. Always learning a lot from you and Rick! ✌️
Well, you convinced me! Thanks for all the content and knowledge you share. My love for the instrument has been revitalized as of recently and watching your videos has truly inspired me to learn and understand as much as I can to chase the tone in my head. Thank you!
Great stuff Rhett, always informative, great playing as well. Killing it with those tones!
Cheers for this, Rhett! I have a rather neglected ZVEX Mastotron on my board that will be getting a lot more attention thanks to these great points you've raised! Much appreciated!
The one thing every guitar player needs is probably a guitar
An Esquire like yours would be perfect. Please do a video on your Esquire!!!
@@nomadwd Or you could watch half of any of the ten million Telecaster videos on UA-cam. Just don't watch the half with the neck pickup. :)
Oh damn I just commented with the most obvious smart arse reply and then scrolled down to see that someone beat me to it.
Ok...hands. You need hands. Fingers, in particular.
Ok smart ass lol
That's a tautology.
13:40 taking me back to my HS days with the "Torn" slide solo. Nice Rhett Nice!!!
This is an awesome video. I've never thought of using fuzz to nuance time - always heard it used super heavy and distorted, which has so narrow application. This opens up a world of possibilities. Thx!
My first pedal in 1978 was a Maestro Fuzztain. It has two wheel dials for volume and drive, and a rotating dial for sustain (clean), soft fuzz, and hard fuzz. I loved it then and still love it now.
This is great entertainment, I find myself wanting more content towards the end of your videos Dude. Great stuff.

One of the most epic sounding solos ever was played through a fuzz, Steve Hackett's solo on Firth Of Fifth (so much for long, sustained, singing)
Probably the most underrated band of all time.
Adding the slide made it magical!
I just got a good deal on a Keeley Fuzz bender. So far I'm digging it. You actually got me wanting to try one after 20+ years of playing. Thanks!
I've never been a fan of fuzz, however, you are winning me over. Starting to look for one. Keep up the great work.
One of your best videos hands down 🤘🏼.
Watching in London. Sees the Tone Bender. So proud!!
Hey Rhett! Awesome show. I love my Keeley Fuzz Bender, dialing in a mix of silicon and germanium... or not!
Nice demo of various applications of fuzz pedals, especially in ways many fail including myself over the years fail to realize; informative, nice. So, 😎
I've been following your channel for a while now, but I've been on a binge recently, and just subscribed. I've really been enjoying the "what is the (blank) sound" format those videos have been really insightful. I know you recently did the Fender tweed sound. I would love to see videos dedicated to the black face and silver face sounds of Fender. Keep up the great content, and thank you for the amazing videos.
Amen! The return of epic intro jams! Christ that was awesome!
3:00 ON the Silicon pedals you have the tone up or cranked. Silicon can sound just as warm as Germanium depending on how the pedal is voiced. Germanium fuzzes are not unreliable. But yes they are temperature sensitive. Also, not all fuzzes clean up with the volume knob. It depends on the circuit. Fuzz Face based circuits are usually your best best for a fuzz that will clean up with your volume knob.
Because of guys like you and Ariel Posen I am getting my first fuzz pedal for Christmas! And of yes QOTSA of course
Been rocking a 90’s Lovetone Big Cheese fuzz for years - does everything. Great vid, love fuzz
Very good video as always
I’m getting that new Jhs fuzz
Merry Christmas Rhett
Great stuff Sir! You are awesome! Guitar Beast with great info and some really nice gear that I will only keep dreaming about! Keep up the good word ! And Fuzz on brotha!
I purchased my second Fuzz pedal this past weekend, Walrus Audio Contraband. Definitely enjoy the violin like tones I get with my Big Muff Pie, blended goodness with mini hums. Thanks for showing how fuzz can be used as an overdrive or boost, that's helpful.
Great video editing as well as awesome playing
Thank you for this. I've been wanting to get a fuzz pedal since Fender Play Live did a deep dive into the Stones' "Satisfaction." Now I know why I'm seeing so damned many different kinds of fuzz boxes. I've only been playing guitar for 7 months (I've sung for 40+ years and playing keys almost as long) and I'm always learning things in your vids.
This was a great video one of your best.
Wow couldn't be better timed! I just bought my first fuzz pedal yesterday man!! 🤘🏼
Great breakdown and demo of Fuzz tones
Nice! I'm old enough to remember when Fuzz was pretty much the only guitar effect beside amp reverb. I'm happy that I still have a 1970's Sam Ash Fuzzz Boxx and Univox Super Fuzz ("Superman" version) in my collection. REALLY looking forward to the BOSS Waza/SolaSound ToneBender team-up next year.
Great vid Rhett.
I wish more people would do "how to use" videos of pedals and other equipment rather than just turn knobs to demo gear.
Fascinating and compelling! THX!
Awesome video as always guy,
I'm French and you're one of my biggest inspiration,
Thank's🔥🇨🇵
I've got an early Catalinbread Manx Loaghtan Fuzz that I picked up back at Old Town Music in Portland and I've been contemplating how useful it is to my setup. This is encouraging me to keep exploring its capabilities!
I absolutely ADORE my Jext Telez Buzz Tone. I have had it for 3 years, and it never fails. It gives me the best fuzz tone I've heard for the music I play.
Great and informative as usual Rhett.
Never understood the big deal - I hate fuzz (it’s ok, you can hate me). I’m playing for 40 years I’ve tried many, always thought they sounded like garbage.
I like natural amp OD. Two years ago I saw a vid where the fuzz is on with the guitar volume at 3 - suddenly - there’s that clean Hendrix tone I could never find.
Thanks for the tips Rhett. I just received my jhs Supreme fuzz. Its my first time trying out fuzz.
Clear cut and to the point. I am going to have a fuzz pedal on my board for sure a Fuzz Bender by Keeley Thanks Rhett!!!
Good to see you zeroing in on your sound. I am not a fuzz guy (at all) but I can dig it. That bass sounds insane.
You really need to release all of these tracks that you play when you demo guitars/pedals/amps/etc. They sound incredible man!
The last pedal on my board is a JRockett Archer. I love the way it interacts with my fuzz. It turns it really changes the tone of the pedal and the response with the amp
Rhett, another great video on effects. What and how to use in different ways, with great information that's simplified to understand. Thank you for all that you do. What is your option on plugins Fuzz. and software in a DAW setting.
Damn good video Rhett. Spot on demonstration. You are a great player...and I need a fuzz now.
Have been slowly working on an overdrive circuit that has a maxed-out, hybrid Big Muff gain stage at its core and I once used a prototype of it for a live set.
There was no gain knob but I was able to transition from glassy, slightly broken up tones to full-on, sustaining leads with just the guitar's volume knob.
First time I had done a set like that and there is something liberating and organic about have that kind of control over your tone and for your playing.
100% my desert island effect!
Great video thanks. Do a video on compression pedals please. I love your channel. Thanks
Great video Rhett. I was a late fuzz convert and I'm still not in love with it but,... The Fulltone Octafuzz has been a great fuzz pedal for me. My '55 LP Jr or Firebird into the Octafuzz into my '65 Vibro Champ sounds filthy. I like that I can switch the octave effect on and off. Your BAE pedal sounded great!
Brilliant tuition thanks a lot
Awesome video really learnt a lot about fuzz
Ok I wasn’t convinced until you added delay and reverb oh my goshhhh
When you started your lead on the intro song, reminded me of Isaiah Mitchell from Eathless’s tone. Sick!
Man of culture!!!
Thanks Rhett. great info
Fell in love with fuzz when I got the Kemper (it has fuzz face and big muff)!! Its such a versatile and rich sounding effect!
Tip: try running a tube screamer in front of a fuzz circuit for huge singing tones✌🏼
Seriously Rhett you inspire me to play more and more. Not one lick or chord you played I hated it’s all just so perfect. BTW just picked up a 63 Skylark
Knowledgeable... putting things into context... how dare you be so intelligent and insightful! :D Thanks man!
Great video Rhett. Your production is great and always getting better. When does the solo album drop?
Excellent, will definitely give the fuzz a try
Great !!
Had a red script Big Muff in the mid '70s. Loved it.
Holy Stain now. Sounds good.
I know this is about the guitars, but that bass growl caught all my attention.
Fantastic. Just what I was looking for
Cheers
Needed no convinced about the need of a fuzz pedal. I just watch as many fuzz pedal videos as possible! This was VERY educational though in other ways to use fuzz. Right now, my only fuzz is an EHX Double Muff, though I plan to purchase others in the future. So far, I think my favorite fuzz is the tone bender, simply because I like Page so much. I really dig the new JHS fuzz as well, and I especially enjoyed the Swarm from Beetronics demo!
the one thing every guitarrist needs: a hundred fuzz pedals.
I got myself a Ramble FX Twin Bender V3 and it’s incredible! Can switch between a MK I.V and MK II tone bender with it and what sold me is you can adjust the impedance so you can use it after any buffered pedals!
yes, it's great. Under appreciated.
Just pulled out my old '66 Maestro Fuzz and put it through an overdriven '87 Carvin X100B. I had a righteous experience.
Great intro riff, killer drum sound!
Your Tone Bender is sick. It haunts me because I never hear a clone that sounds that good.... and the waiting list and of course the price. It sounds worth it if can get one though.
Well Boss TB-2W was just announced and when it will release in Q2 2021 probably 90% of guitar UA-camrs gonna cover it. It's on my wishlist for sure.
Looks at Rhett.
Looks down on my board of 6 fuzz pedals.
Look back at Rhett.
Buys one more fuzz.
Underrated comment here
Dude this was a really good video. Great tones and fuzz info. On the lead tone at the end I thought the reverb and delay were quite wet. It gave me an idea for another video: I'd be interested in your thoughts on using reverb and delay live (as opposed to recording). Would that be too wet live? Or would it work? I know you've played a fair amount live professionally so I'm curious to hear your opinions/experience on this. I don't think its been addressed in this way that much by others, I think it would make a good episode of your show, if you're so inclined. cheers
I’m sorta excited to hear more about the Boss Tone Bender coming out next year.
I bet that damn pedal sells faster than we can imagine. Aren't they limiting it to a certain amount being built?
@@therangersinger I have heard it will be limited but don’t know what that means to Boss. Could be 200, could be 20000
@@therangersinger I got on the waiting list last week through a well-known vendor, and I was 104 in line... two days after the announcement and it wasn’t even listed on their site yet. My expected delivery is July 2021.
@@Respecttheriff They only have 10,000 transistors and they haven’t even tested them yet... so I’d say maybe 2,000 will be made, considering each uses multiple transistors that need to be paired.
@@Beizeiten78 good luck. Hope you get one.
Rhett, Fuzz Post...I’m in! The great thing about Fuzz, is that each one has a different character. The Kingtone Ge Mini Fuzz is on my board. I feel like a Fuzzface type pedal has to be on my board? I really enjoy hearing your collection. You are partly responsible for my current Fuzz addiction!
Favorite types are Fuzzface, Zonk, Tone Bender... the key for me is having control over the bias, volume, EQ (?) and fuzz. Simpler can be great, but sometimes you HAVE to be able to dial in the sound to your rig, to get the right sound?
Bottomline, I tend to like boutique pedals where the builder has taken a classic circuit and improved it. I like to be able to tweek !
If I hit Lotto, I would have dozens!
very good video. some great tips.
Great tones :)
I just got my jhs 3 fuzz yesterday! Perfect timing!
I recently multitracked a lead part for an ambient track with a rat on one side and a HM-2 set to a thick fuzzy sound on the other. Honestly one of the coolest sounds I’ve gotten. It contrasted all the other overdriven and clean guitars so much almost like a synth or vocals
Yooooo love the syd Barrett mention
Good point about finding the right Fuzz that suites your personal playing.
Like yourself I own many, easily the most duplicated effect pedal in my collection.
When you were speaking about doing the research for the type of Fuzz a person wishes sound like, amplifier selection is a very large consideration.
I have Fuzz/Distortion pedals that sound wonderful through my Plexi but are unusable when played through my Fender Twin Reverb.
Amplifiers can be as picky as Guitarists when it comes to Fuzz pedals.
excellent, as always.
P-90 (neck) out of phase + strat single (middle) in series sounds luscious with fuzz, clean-ish and on full. God bless You!
This video sent me down a nostalgia rabbit hole and taught me that Natalie Imbruglia was the *fourth* musician to record and play "Torn." Huh!
Came down to comment the same!
