    I discovered this song in the eightes on a local station . My best since 1966 was shocked since he knew I was up on all the soul hits. How I missed I don't know, but I love this song

    I love this song immensely and often come to hear it here. Diana vocals are breathtaking, the melody and arrangament are superb, the two other girls also play a great part. This should have been Nr. 1 on several charts.

    When this song came out, I wore a grove in the record album. I think this was a hot song for Diana. I remember it on the radio and I loved when she sang it on Ed Sullivan with that "Toni" wig! IIIWWWWO!!!

    A really great song by the legendary trio. Suprisingly it only reached nr. 31 on American charts and Nr. 37 in Great Britain.
    It should have been at least a top ten song. Diana's voice is superb on this song.

    When I heard this song on Ed Sullivan, I pleaded with my mom to get me this song. We went downtown to G.C. Murphy's and my mom bought me the album "Let the sun shine in" I played a groove in this cut.

    One of Diane's best vocal performances with the Supremes.
    She displays very much range and impeccable technique here.
    Combined with a stellar sound, that only she could accomplish.
    Her screeches peak around d#7
    And the way she ad libs in the last chorus is genius!

    I was surprised at the song's low chart placing. The song deserved to be Nr. 1. Diana sings terrifically.

    What a great song about the twelve signs of the zodiac. It makes me want to go out at night and look for them! Great sound Diana. I like the way they name off all 12 signs! My favorite part.

    People arguing about who should get the credit -- don't forget, Motown had the best musicians in the business. They were jazz players when Berry Gordy met them in the 1950s, so, beng jazz players, they were excellent musicians. They also read music expertly (not all professional musicians did), and the Holland Brothers said that this made their job as songwiters much easier.

    I don't think this song got the airplay it should have. I can remember them doing it on Ed Sullivan, but they did an abridged version of it. At that point the records were no longer important anyway, the focus was on Diana Ross upcoming solo career. I think its a good song, its definately included in my collection of Supreme's records.

    @empire9898 Very much so! Have you ever heard Diana's "solo" of "Aquarius" on the Let the Sun Shine In album, and thenlater the group's 10 minute attempt at it 'live'? If one only heard that, one would think Cindy couldn't sing, but she actually has a very nice voice...

  • @57highland
    @57highland 8 років тому +8

    This was going to be Diana's last single with the Supremes, but Berry wanted her to go out on a really strong performance (and this song wasn't a big hit), so they delayed her departure until the Supremes recorded "Some Day We'll Be Together", which was a much bigger hit than this, although I've always loved this song.

    More and more people these days are basically saying “yes” or “no” to you based off of your sign. Like they make ALL of these assumptions about you as soon as you tell them your birthday. We need more women out there like the woman in this song. Cause at the end of the day, it really doesn’t matter.

  • @italoman9

    This was a really good song. Remains one of my favorite late-DRATS ones. Some Motown anthology reissues have had the non-single-mastered version, which isn't as good as this 45 one. Maybe if Motown had promoted it, and The Supremes performing it more often on TV than just Sullivan in spring '69, it would've become better known and what I think could've been a Top 20 charter.

    did you know that someday we'll be together wasnt even recorded with mary and flo..... the backup singers were just studio artists.. diana was the only supreme on the recording

  • @shmuli9
    @shmuli9 13 років тому +1

    @Motownman100 I've also wondered why this didn't do better. I'm sure purists don't like it because it had the Andantes singing background, but it's actually quite a good song.

  • @shmuli9
    @shmuli9 13 років тому +1

    @empire9898 No, it didn't really have a "Supremes Sound". And regardless of what B.G. at the time thought (he could just replace Mary and Cindy with anyone), the dynamic wasn't very good, and I think people for the most part picked up on that. "Love Child" and "I'm Livin' in Shame", while the backgrounds were provided by the Andantes, DID have a very Supremes sound to them... Phil Spector did odd things like that, too.

  • @shmuli9
    @shmuli9 13 років тому +1

    @empire9898 Perhaps... but if all those "other artists" had big hits with similar songs, it follows that the Supremes should have as well...

  • @aimperator

    I remember watching them when theywere on Ed Sullivan perorming this song, I would assumd they would have done he complete version, since it was the record they were promoting, but I didn't remember. i always watch them when they were on, but on oter thing, I can't remember seeing them on there perfoming Some Things You Never Get Use To. Thats another one I like, but it would have sounded better with the Supremes dingthe backgrond vocals.

  • @aimperator
    @aimperator 12 років тому

    The first year after she left the Supremes,Diana's carrer went into a stall.I remeber in a question & answer column one person wrote in asking whatever happened to Diana Ross?It did get better later on of course, but it never did stop for the Supremes, As for the charts,a number 1 is great,something in the top ten is nice,but anything in the top thirty would sell in the millions and be classified as a hit.With Diana,the Supremes only had three number one abums,and they recorded over 24 of them

  • @aimperator
    @aimperator 12 років тому

    The Andantes were the props. Mary and Cindy were the Supremes. Without them, there would be no group, and Diana could never carry it on her own. People tend to forget that for the first year after her departure, she did nothing, her career went into a complete stall. It never stopped for the Supremes though.

    I think you missed my point.The Supremes outsold all of the artists you mention, except the Beatles of course.They were one of the most popular acts of the 60's,transcending the "pop group" catagory and becoming part of the entertainment establishment.No one else at Motown did that including the Temptations.The I Hear A Symphony album peaked at number 11,and remained in the top 40 for over two years, obviously selling in the multimillions.Diana was not magic as some want us to believe.

  • @italoman9

    @aimperator I love this song, too. Actually, their abridged Sullivan performance was that way on the Sullivan classics repackaged DVDs. But when originally performed on his show, if you get a chance to see or get any of their bootlegged performances on his show, they lip-synch the whole song.

    You are wrong. She released her first solo album. "Reach Out and Touch" reached #2 on Billboard and then came the monster #1 "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". She had 5 more #1's after ANMHE. Stop spreading false information. In addition, "Someday We'll Be Together" was recorded and was supposed to be on her solo album as well but Berry Gordy made it a Supremes song. It was DR & the Supremes last #1. Is that you Mary Wilson?

    @Drillin4Oil Out of all their mostly weird-sounding Supremes songs backings, I thought that overall The Andantes did some of their best work "approximating" Mary and Cindy here. Kind of like I thought they did well on "Some Things..." Of course, would've been best with Mary and Cindy's own great, real voices. On most records backing Supremes and anybody else, The Andantes don't even sound like real singers--they sound unnatural.

    Some people have such a tremendous talent, and believe so strongly in themselves, they can surmount any obstacles and make it totaly on their own. Then you have ones like Diana, who do have some musical talent, but her greatest talent was how wide she could spread her legs.
