    This is my perfect ship design, I loved the NX-01 and it's great to see that brought forward into TOS era design. I hope it does have two cores or at least power generators in those impulse engines because I like them a lot.

    I would start by thinking "Why would Starfleet design a ship like this?" It's got chunky impulse engines so it's probably quite nippy for it's size. It's packing a nice amount of firepower for it's size. I should imagine designed this ship with rapid response to crisis in mind. It's not intended for long range cruising about like the constitution, it's intended to get to the scene rapidly, assess the situation and report back with a boosted com system(The little antennae on the top) and if the target is a hostile ship it's gonna give them the option to explain themselves or if it comes down to a firefight it's one they intend the ranger class to win.

    Stuart , the reason for the impulse tubes to be big is that is where engineering is and there are two engineering , one port one starboard, and the anti-deuterium and deuterium storage is in the secondary engineering hull.

    In the original TOS pilot, 'The Cage', the warp nacelles were referred to as rockets (the concepts in ship design have improved for the second pilot). So to refer to the impulse engines as rocket-like is a great call back, rather than an insult in the design :)

    The antenna-like thing on the pod between the nacelles is probably the visual indicator for what type of configuration you're running the ship with. At least that's what it is on the 26th century take on the same ship class, the Paladin class.
    Temporal battlecruisers can switch between offensive, defensive or supportive ship configurations on a molecular level. Depending on what configuration your running with, the "antenna" shines either red, blue or yellow. So it mostly seems to exist for gameplay.

    Interesting ship. I think the placement of the secondary hull is off, though. I think this was a missed opportunity to do a TOS era version of a Doug Drexler NX-01 refit style ship. The Ranger is literally 3/4 there already, and relocating the secondary hull to resemble the NX-01 refit, and losing the impulse pontoons would make this ship 1000% better.

    It is what I would expect the NX Class to look like. The TOS/ AOY ships have to maintain a 1960's sci-fi aesthetic, and the game graphics did a very good job of maintaining that. The way the game works the weapons fit Fore and Aft and cover a hemisphere/ cone that covers those areas. That was indeed a phaser strip, but it is "Game Graphics" accomodating, not emitter turret accommodating.

  • @markplott4820

      Looking back at this design... I would put the central torpedo tubes in the two cylinders where the engine struts make that 120° bend that would give you excellent for and aft launching points provide a logical way of reloading the tube's magazine from primary storage. You could even incorporate emergency conduits running laterally between both the two ventral torpedo tubes and the two engineering hulls. Say portside tube is out and starboard side primary loading conduit is out you could still direct torps originating from starboard engineering all the way around to still be able to fire from the sole remaining topside launcher...

    • @JimbobHarrigan1984
      @JimbobHarrigan1984 8 років тому

      That's a good way to deal with that problem, all you need to do afterwards is convert the current launcher to a tactical sensor pod or as a back up warp field regulator.

  • @adamlytle2615

    So as Stewart was saying that the black stripe on the hull reminded him of a phaser strip, I thought of a way you could do almost a proto-phaser strip - by way of ball turrets that roll around on rails, able to get better angle of fire and group multiple turrets for concentrated fire.
    Not sure if it would realistically represent any sort of meaningful advantage in spaceship combat, but it would look cool and wouldn't be an unreasonable piece of technology for the TOS era.

    TOS era ships had a more uniform look as they were mostly based on basic parts of the Ent Connie, they would just reconfigure the parts. However by the time the Movie era rolls around we see a few redesigns and Ent Connie parts resized and kit bashed with more ships like Miranda class and Excelsior class and others. They too we have seen size changes as well.

  • @henrynorcrossii3363

    Star Fleet tends to build very modular ships where the same basic components can be used on multiple classes. I know that much of the original Star Trek Technical Manual isn't considered Canon except for what has appeared on screen. There is the possibility that the saucer is the same basic size of the Constitution Class.

    The thing on top of the Torpedo Tube is actually a Temporal Transciever Array. In the 23rd Century it was probably a Comm Array, but the end game version its a Temporal Array instead because the playable version is a Timeship disguised as a TOS-era ship for missions.

    • @Cythil
      @Cythil 8 років тому

      Now they just need a Temporal ship made to look like a 25th century ship. ;)
      (My guess is that there not going to do that as there plenty of 25th century ships already. And it would just add the temporal bits to the ship. But who knows.)

    I must admit the main Secondary Hull really doesn't work for me; it's location below without a neck is fine but it's waaaay too far forward. Reminds me a lot of the Abrams-Prise, actually, which has the same main problem for me. I get that it's supposed to be a TOS-era NX-Refit but i think it'd look much better without the Secondary Hull at all. It just sticks out like a sore thumb just glued on like this.
    Speaking of Abrams-verse; the secondary Secondary Hulls remind me a lot of some of the JJ-verse background ships, and THAT i like.

  • @markplott4820

    Stuart, while its cool to think of a upgrade to Tos Connie with Ring phasers, in canon it's established that ring phasers were not invented until the Pre-next gen era beginning with the Ent C serving as a test bed for the Tech. And becoming fully realized in the Next gen era with the Ent D test bed.

    +12:50 That bit stuck between the Nacelles is an Engineer subsystem pod that contains a warp field stabiliser on the NX at least.
    But looking at it without knowing that yes I'd have thought it was either something akin to an Impulse Crystal or a dorsal sensor. it could even be a rear observation module with the dome being just that a dome (possibly with a telescope & other sensors in it).
    If the Nacelles were on upside-down it would look rather like a Nebula Class too.

    the Pioneer class, is supposed to be a mix of science, engineering, and tactical ship. However in STO, the science class has a little difficulty with it. But, this is like a combination of the NX-01, Korlev class [Axanar], and the Centaur/Excelsior variant line of ships. In this the only problem with it in game is you really do not get any consoles until you cross. However, as an official ship it is a utility cruiser, which the Destiny class [STO] has some design cues from something like this. And in this it seems that no one thought of the ANTON class as a starter ship for this new section.

    From the dorsal view it looks like there is no saucer impulse system aft, but on tubes sticking out of the saucer , there looks like port and starboard impulse thrusters, so it looks like it has more thruster capacity than the Connie, I wonder if it's faster ? And regarding the aft space on C deck it looks like the are compensating for the space lost to the foreward facing torp tubes mounted in the saucer, because don't want births near the torp launchers because of waste heat and radiation.

    If it had a few more weapon points I'd call it a gunship or gunboat. However, when someone takes a very powerful engine setup and puts a few but capable weapons on it. I can't help but wonder if it is an interceptor. Designed to get to the threat or on scene as fast as possible and hopefully stop or delay it till help shows up. Seems to fit the role if this is how the ship works.

    speculation about the twin tube without windows:
    twin engineering sections with staring at the forward section matter/antimatter storage, twin warp reactors, then the hump behind the bridge is engineering control and an port starboard power transfer point... then below the pylons is another power distribution system that shunts power backwards to the impulse engines, or upwards to the warp nacelles or the tactical modules.
    btw... I don't like the look of the rollbar antenna BUT I like the idea of a dedicated tactical commutations array.

    I don't mind experimental designs for Impulse engines sometimes you can barely tell where they are like on the Grissom. and other times they are huge and obvious like on the Kelvin (JJverse fleet ships and the Axanar equivalents) and the Ranger.
    I kinda like some of the 24th/25th century designs that have more than 2 Impulse engines too.... Like possibly the Prometheus can use more than the normal 2 or 4 Impulse engines to zip about with. and some of the STO ships have extra steering thrusters in the struts too.

    it is possible that there was major technology theories that were tested between 2268 and 2270 for 2272 future uses on the Constitution class and Miranda class retrofit and new obirth class programs. also maybe minor changes had to happen to tos technology and designs because of the enterprise e being at the earth first warp mission and the Borg showing up in star trek enterprise in the early star trek seasons. also how much design theory did the Axanar war cause starfleet to rethink design theories?

    I dislike starships with thin necks, not tactical , makes it easy to shear it off with a mega phaser or a few Torps. So, the designers got it right. Good on them. I like how it's integrated into the hull. Leaving the ventral side sensor dome was a good design choice as well. Seeing this as war ship it doesn't need a planetary Sensor it can scan the planet in other ways. Perhaps the planetary sensor was moved to the ventral side of the roll bar torp room.

  • @larqven0192
    @larqven0192 6 років тому

    A lot of apparent armament, but definitely oriented towards the front. Perhaps very powerful impulse is needed so as to ensure an ability to outfly opponents and get into a forward firing position again and again? Certainly the design pulls in the traditional Constitution arrangement without breaking any rules. I do think that the impulse engines are the part of the pontoons aft of the junctions leading to the nacelles and the roll-bar.The antenna on top of the roll-bar might be an independent sensor for programming telemetry into the photon torpedoes just prior to firing?
    I'm also not sure about the secondary hull. It might be that engineering is there as expected, with the pontoons directing the power to the nacelles through the primary hull, but I can see the idea of the raised section in the back of the primary hull being engineering as well. The secondary hull might therefore contain a lot more shuttlecraft and supplies for ground based missions involving colonization? Or have other cylindrical hull types plugged in if Samuel's suggestion was correct?

And that antenna and dome on top is a comm antenna and the dome is the command center for torp operations, unfortunately it's not tactical . Loss of life if there is a radiation leak or overheating, kills everybody in the pod. Which is why I think torp pods in TOS era is rediculous .

    Thank you for saying the dish was not intended to be a Deflector but a Sensor. It has bothered me for decades that it was called a deflector when it was obviously a Sensor. The dish is not even in the right spot to deflect because it leaves the entire top of the saucer exposed to whatever you are trying to defect during warp travel. I did not hear you mention it but the 4 projections out of the forward edge of the saucer (look at front view) with red tips look like phasers.

    Overall I like the design, Kind of NX class and Miranda class. But I do have a bit of the problem with the torpedo roll bar , AFIK auto torp systems were Not invented until the Movie era. NX roll bar was a engineering pod not a weapons pod. We first see the auto torp pod appear in the TWOK on the USS Reliant and can extrapolate that they had the tech beginning with the refit enterprise . So is this roll bar staffed or do they intend to rewrite the timeline ?

    Imagine the amount of plasma conduits going from the engine room in the secondary hull to the nacelles.

    maybe the ranger was the primary the Explorer before the Constitution class? the ranger class was the prime version of the ship class as the uss korvolave ncc-1421 a generation before the Constitution class?

    the phasers look so on front saucer them red lighting holes when you look at the angled front view ?

    This looks like an Archer class with a secondary hull and different nacelles

    The Connie has that dome on the underside of the saucer. If memory serves me, I think that makes it a sensor array.

      But, redundant now that it's obscured by the engineering hull. I'm sure they have a Alternate of observing the planet for away missions.

    this was my favorite in terms of capability of the TOS ships, but the design bugs me some. I figure it either is earlier than the Connie, or rushed die to the resurgence of the Romulans. Given its non-era appropriate special power, maybe that's why it has the weird phaser-less parts and the huge pontoons that don't seem to have liveable space. 23rd century photonic decoy tech would have to get pretty hefty.

    I think those pieces on the roll-bar are the maneuvering thrusters. Have you had a chance to fly the Ranger-class in game? I really enjoy it.

      The Ranger is nice, I tried the Paladin out with the Ranger skin. Very nice looking ship it's funny trolling the Borg in it.

    It looks like those four "'dimples" on the front saucer rim was overlooked. I'm guessing those are the actual primary hull phaser turrets? Either that or very odd looking headlights. 😏

    I need to pay closer attention to any stated ranges in battles given on the Original Series.
    But the lack of Phasers on the top would be a disadvantage at very close ranges. As well as for slow speed point defence from things like asteroids or space mines.
    I never even noticed the lack of rear firing Torpedoes and top firing Phasers until their use was presented as useful in things like Star Trek the Motion Picture (by the Klingons) or how even the D's Phaser Coverage now looks kinda weak the Poor Ol' Connie in TV show form looks very vulnerable indeed.
    She'd have to manoeuvre a lot just to fire back in many cases. rear firing Torpedoes sure would have been useful in a few spots in the Original series.
    But then I notice some really odd things like I'm sure the Enterprise goes backwards at warp more than once.

    That could be a phaser array because even though it is a tos design, it is still using 25th century retrofit tech.

    The ranger is not the starter, the nacelle parts connecting to the things means that its not the starter ship, I'm quite sure they said its the starter, I might be wrong, sorry if I am.

    • @paulwarren9927
      @paulwarren9927 8 років тому +1

      Yes, correct. The starter ship is the Pioneer class. The Ranger class is a Tier 4 ship, I think.

      Not upgradeable because STO feels like Paladin class is the upgraded version. You can even use the Ranger skin on the Paladin..

    That would be bad placement for a phaser strip, if they fired directly forward, the phasers would hit the saucer before any target.
