  • Most Have Never Seen This Before Bees Balling A Queen To Protect Her
    Balling of Queen
What an amazing experience to see while catching a swarm. The Queen Bees daughters surrounded her in an effort to protect her. There are other reasons why they do this but in this uncommon instance it was a good thing.
Here's some info from the web: In certain circumstances worker bees crowd round and enclose the queen. This is believed to be a panicky attempt to protect her. It is liable to occur if the queen is frightened. It is most likely to occur during or following manipulation in the spring in poor weather when stores are short, in small lots, and during robbing; in other words, in time of stress and at times when the queen could not be replaced by the bees. Old bees, long queenless, are liable to ball a new queen on introduction, or a virgin queen on her return to the hive.
When balling, the bees form a ball with the queen at the centre. Balling is accompanied by a distinctive hissing sound in the note of the colony. The ball will become tighter if the operator endeavours to break it by hand or by the application of smoke, and the queen will probably be damaged or even suffocated. If balling is seen, close the hive at once, if practicable, and await more favourable circumstances. The ball can be broken up by dipping in water, but the queen should then be caged for a time, and the condition of the stock seen to.
To avoid balling make the minimum of disturbance in the spring, making any necessary full examination when honey is coming in or after feeding, and stop if, signs of balling, occur. The more excitable dark races are the most likely to ball their queen.
Honeybees can always be dangerous and it is not recommended to attempt to remove them with experience with bees or construction knowledge.
I hope you enjoy this little bit of fun. I enjoy your feedback in the comments and thank you for taking the time to check out my channel. Until the next time, enjoy the show.

Here is a little bee educational material for ya.
Africanized honey bees (known colloquially as "killer bees") are hybrids between European stock and the East African lowland subspecies A. m. scutellata; they are often more aggressive than European honey bees and do not create as much of a honey surplus, but are more resistant to disease and are better foragers.[23] Accidentally released from quarantine in Brazil, they have spread to North America and constitute a pest in some regions. However, these strains do not overwinter well, so they are not often found in the colder, more northern parts of North America. The original breeding experiment for which the East African lowland honey bees were brought to Brazil in the first place has continued (though not as originally intended). Novel hybrid strains of domestic and re-domesticated Africanized honey bees combine high resilience to tropical conditions and good yields. They are popular among beekeepers in Brazil.

@@roybm3124 "Hot" bee balling is different because they flap their wings hard... the use of their flight muscles generates heat and raises the temperature inside the ball. This has been seen as a defensive strategy against giant hornets who have a thicker, harder exoskeleton the bee's stingers cant penetrate. Against smaller rivals I would think they would just sting them to death.

Protecting the queen is the number one priority of a bee colony. Without the queen laying hundreds of eggs/day to keep the hive functioning, it would soon die out, since the average lifespan of a worker bee is only 5-6 weeks in the Summer.

For those who have no idea about this
The queen is responsible for laying eggs and producing pheromones that keep the colony cohesive and productive. However, sometimes the workers decide to kill their queen and replace her with a new one
This can happen for various reasons, such as:
*The queen is too old or weak to lay enough eggs to maintain the colony’s population.
*The queen’s pheromones have diminished and the workers no longer recognize her as their leader.
*The queen has produced defective or diseased brood that threatens the colony’s health.
*The colony is under stress from external factors such as predators, parasites, or lack of food
*The queen is damaged or injured by accident or by the beekeeper
The workers kill the queen by a process known as balling, where they cluster tightly around the queen and generate heat to raise her body temperature until she dies. This is not a form of stinging, but rather a form of suffocation.
The workers then raise a new queen from one of the existing eggs or larvae in the hive. The new queen will emerge after about 16 days and will mate with several drones (male bees) to ensure genetic diversity. The new queen will then take over the role of laying eggs and producing pheromones for the colony

Bees can ball up on a queen to protect her when she exhibits a nervous reaction . I have seen it a few times over the years. Yes, they can also ball a queen or even an intruder such as a wasp or similar to kill it . But in this case , it was not to kill her. If they were,it would not have been so easy to break the ball to capture her.

This happened to us this morning. Two ligustrum trees in bloom and bees found little holes in one of our (real) stone columns. Called an old timer bee keeper and he shored up all the cracks ( wood attached to stone in areas) and quite a few little holes with plastic bags. Then the fashioned a ledge and set his box on top. He comes out once or twice a day and things were not moving along as quickly as he expected, so search for more holes, keeps plugging them. Yesterday he said some bees were on the box, so things are looking up.
But late afternoon, the bees were so angry, swarming. Then we noticed bees at the ground level, covering the stone in a 16x16” square. We called the bee keeper and asked him if this was normal or expected. This morning ( unfortunately I missed it but my husband witnessed it) there was a huge ball of bees sitting in the rose bush almost directly under the box that is up about 12+ feet. The bee keeper said a different swarm had arrived, thus the angry bees yesterday afternoon. Bee keeper said queen was somewhere in the ball. He picks the ball up it up and moves it near a different box he placed on the stone knee wall, about 20 feet away.
So right now, after living in our house for 19 years, we now have two swarms - central Florida. My curious Boxer boy wants to check the new box out - has to be taken out on a leash.
Bee keeper said the new swarm needed to bring honey with them, I suppose as an offering of good will so they would be accepted into the hive. Apparently they were empty handed.
If anyone has any insights on how we can move these bees along in a quicker fashion, please comment.

Buddy when u work in this Buisness u can handle Bees without a suit because if u get like 100-150 stungs ur body is immun against the poison the sting still hurt but not effect u much , Edit: but not get all 150 stungs in one day thats not good xd

Just wondering, do you still get stung a few times here and there, even when the bee colony is not feeling threatened? If so, are you just so used to it now that you don’t even react to it on camera? Thanks in advance and keep up the awesome work!

I’m sure you get this question a lot, and have likely answered it before, but how do you handle them with no suit without getting stung?

    • @YappyBeeman
      @YappyBeeman  Рік тому +8

European genetic honeybees are a little easier to work with than the africanized. With mine, i just treat them gentile'ish and don't cause them to alarm so i don't get eat up too bad.
