  • Kevin Gerard Barry (20 January 1902 - 1 November 1920) was the first Irish republican to be executed by the British since the leaders of the Easter Rising. Barry was sentenced to death for his part in an Irish Volunteers operation which resulted in the deaths of three British soldiers.
Barry's execution outraged nationalist public opinion in Ireland and its diaspora, largely because of his age. The timing of the execution, only days after the death by hunger strike of Terence MacSwiney, the republican Lord Mayor of Cork, brought public opinion to fever-pitch.
This documentary from RTE Radio by Michael Holmes tells his story, included on the documentary is Donal O'Donovan, nephew of Kevin Barry.

His grandniece is currently writing a book taken from her father's book , I think the gentleman here speaking ... and that man got the info from the notes for a book from HIS OWN father .
The woman who's writing it is Siofran O'Donovan .

This is the most information I've ever heard about Kevin's history, family and Republican alike. Hard to believe his sisters attitude towards a reprieve for her brother, shocking.

I have so much in common with Kevin. From where he was born and reared, schooling, our interest in Republicanism right to his family in Co carlow. Our paths are paralleled in so many ways it's a bit weird. I think the linchpin is Freedom fighting across the Bord, everything that this brings to the table, (no excluding.) We have much to learn and change about ourselves, we have as many faults as we have plusses. Progress with a loss is not progress. If greed is the winner Ireland is the looser. Our foundation as a nation is underminded by people who are handed the keys and think they have become king. The fundamentals of our history has been dipped in blood sweat and tears. We are still building our population, many new nationalities. Hopefully we all integrate to some degree. We are a good small safe country. Time will rell. This is why Kevin gave his life. Black, white yellow all brother's. 🏳️‍🌈🇺🇳🇮🇪

Same attitude that brought Ireland to where it is today.

Sorry, can't agree. What black, brown or yellow person ever fought for our island as my ancestors did, call them what you want but I'm sorry they're not my brothers.
