Awesome thank you! I’m about to start tagging on my channel to track the fish in my stock pond. I bought one of the $100 kits off eBay but I’m going to use your method to make more tags when I run out
I loved your idea and decided to try it. After tagging over sixty bass, I finally caught a tagged fish, but the numbers had worn off. I hope they all haven’t worn off. How long do your numbers usually last? Have you had this problem too?
Great video. Could you tell me where you purchase the gun, plastic “t” things, and the yellow tubing. And also, how u assembled all the things together. Thanks again!! Great video
I purchased all the materials via eBay. As for assembly, that takes a little time and patience. I separated out the ends of the plastic tags and slipped the shrink tube over top of each one. This requires snipping a little of the ends of the plastic tags to make the tubbing fit. I used a hairdryer to shrink the tubing to stay on the tags. As I tagged fish I just recorded the tag number and the information I wanted to track.
Just curious on what is the longest length of time you have had the tags to stay on ? Great video. Looking forward to saving some money using this technique
we still are catching fish with the tags on them from when we made this video. Also have caught a couple that you can see the tag was either pulled out or may not have been secured all the way and worked itself out.
@@TrueBlueCollectibles Planned on using them on private land as well just wanted to make sure. Have you ever had any issues with them coming off or hurting the fish? Trying to pitch this idea to my biologist grandpa who owns the land so I can try and take count of fish populations in the pond.
@@EmpoweredMotivation2413 not hurting the fish but have caught a few back over time where you can see the spot where the tag was. Occasionally they do come off. Probably from other fish or getting caught on grass of vegetation.
We no longer live at the property there, but when we were there the numbers were holding up fine. I always retouched them whenever I would catch one again. I only ever had one recaught that the tag came out of, you can see the scaring on the scales if this happens to you. Most likely didnt get it deep enough to get around the bones.
I recorded their weight and length every time I caught them. They always went back in as baselines. I would still record the fish that I took out to see if there was an improvement across the board.

I'm in a situation where i had an aquarium bluegill for 2 years now, hes got way big (and aggressive) to be held in my tank. The lake i want to put him at is a lake where a lot of anglers are. I want to have a small (fake) tag or indication so nobody kills it.
there are similar options for sale for the gun and tags on the link page, for the shrink tube under where it says the listing has ended you can order tubing there. If that doesnt work you can always just search ebay for price tag gun and t barbs, and 2mm shrink tubing

Great Vid.... Do you write the numbers on the tubing before or after you shrink it?

How is that paint pen material holding up?
Seem like a great idea but are they legal?
Private pond on my property so it’s not an issue. Would probably be an issue if you did this on a public waterway.

Thank you.! Where did you find the pen to right down the numbers.! & Tahnk you I need this video
We got the pens at Michael's craft store. They could be bought at most any hobby store such as Hobby Lobby.
Can you put the eBay link to that heat shrink you use ? Plz
Should I record their weight and length

What’s the tubing called again?
Saved my life
Great work!! Can you provide a ebay link for that tubing? Is it easy to write on that tube, isn't too small?

Red Fishing this should work for your gill as well. Just make sure you tag near the top of the body between like the 3rd and 4th dorsal barbs.
Can you sale the the tag
what is the purpose of tagging?
Tagging the fish allows you to track the growth rate and helps determine if you need to cull (take out) more fish to have a happy population.
Thanks for the reply !

it says when u click the link that the seller doesn’t sell them anymore
