I have been getting lots of questions when I livestream and the number one asked is, "Do you still have your childhood game collection?" The answer is - No. In this video, I explain why I sold my collection back in 2018.

I get it. Old games take up a lot of room, and it's not like you were ever playing them. I ended up selling most of my guitars when I stopped being able to play anymore (crippling illness.) It was just shit to look at them and be reminded of what I couldn't do anymore. I guess this collection had become your father's shrine. Sometimes you just have to move on and let go, whichever way you can. It is liberating. Ignore all the people saying it is because of your wife. They obviously didn't listen to a word you said.
You were a lucky guy growing up to have a Dad that was so into gaming and had the resources and knowledge to provide you that childhood. Cherish the memories, like you said. They are worth more than a room full of plastic.

@@MyRetroLife I struggle playing games because it reminds me of my X so I can only imagine how insane it must be having a room full of dad everyday. I don't even have pictures of my dad because it's too painful to think of his loss. I'm 34 now and lost him in 7th grade. He was murdered. If you found a way to move on from the loss of your father then I'm proud of you brotha. Your videos offer so much more than just "hey remember this stuff?" Idk why insecure men always want to blame the woman/wife.
At least Tyler has all the wonderful memories on video thanks to his dad! Imo these videos are more of a treasure than the video games itself. I would have loved if my dad would have filmed me too.

I think preserving video footage of your childhood is way more valuable than a video game collection. Video games can be bought back but videos of your childhood is something you can't buy or get back. Especially back in those days, cameras were so large and hard to hold for a long time. @@MyRetroLife, you're very lucky to have your childhood captured on film. I've collected comics, retro games and toys, then sold them off. I sold the toys on Ebay for a pretty nice profit. Letting go of material things is a healthy experience mentally and even spiritually. It's also nice to get the money back that you put into it.
Comics are basically free to read online now and retro games can be emulated on PC. I don't see a problem with downloading a free game when I already bought the thing once or twice already.

    • @4packdaddy
      @4packdaddy 3 роки тому +17

Well if you actually play video games and you play on the different systems you own they won’t just be sitting there. That’s the difference between just a collector and a video game lover with a collection. If all you’re doing is collecting them, then of course that’s all they will do. People who collect video games just to collect them can’t really get much out of it other than the fact that they can say they have this or that. I have a video game collection that ive built over the years and I like the way video games used to be made before the 2000’s and maybe a bit after. I grew up with these games and I enjoy them more than a lot of the modern games. Sure I still keep up with the times but I feel that older video games really were made with a different mindset back then. My video games do not just “sit” on my shelf thank you very much.

Dude I just cried watching your video, I have a daughter on the way and she can be born any minute now and I also have a stepson who’s a son to me, so this story hits home for me. My dad was my reason for loving my Nintendo 64. It’s my first console ever. The first game I ever owned was Zelda Ocarina of Time and Diddy Kong Racing. My dad, siblings, and I played DKR over and over again. One day I sold it to some random game store for credit at 13 years old. It broke his heart, years later after I graduated high school I bought a clean copy of DKR and his smile was the most amazingly genuine facial expression I’ve ever seen. To this day I still own it. I will never sell it.

U can “promote” selling your collection all day. As I said in my previous comment, Sometimes, deciding if u should sell or not sell the collection isn’t the prob, the prob can be the collection u have, in the area u live in, can mean absolutely nothing. Japanese import collections in USA. Lol good luck 👍 it’s not even a FACT of do I want to or not want to sell it, more of the reality, no one wants a Japanese import collection in USA. when it comes to selling J imports in USA it’s 100% all about where u live, cause that interest level changes DRAMATICALLY from state to state. I’d sell my J collection in a heartbeat. If it was to the right person. Just never happening, either little to no interest or u deal with someone that knows nothing about the value/pricing for j imports. aka selling Japanese imports (especially a collection) in America is a nightmare. N GL to anyone with one trying to do so, hopefully u live in a better area. Lol u should be happy u had a simple common collection that u were even able to sell. 👏👏👏👏👏

@@shaggyd9431 to pay for rent (progression in your life) food (u need to survive) and weed? Really roflmao? In other words u haven’t progressed at all in life, prob have no savings, n why u had to sell your collection in the first place. Cause u a dead beat living pay check to pay check smoking weed roflmao. MOST people who have a “collection” are financially stable (usually how they are able to START that collection in the first place) n if u selling that collection, it’s usually for “extra” cash, not cause you “need” it. Your situation and comment alone, kid u “needed” to sell your collection. Lmao maybe get a better job, or go back to school and get a degree to get a better job etc. just Jesus. My Japanese Import collection can stay in my possession forever or (IF) I can sell it (and I gladly would, if found right buyer) but regardless of WHICH one happens. It doesn’t affect me. I’m financially stable, n if this collection does sell, it’s more so to help me make room, give me a few extra $$$ for things just sitting on shelves doing nothing atm (cause collectors items not meant to be played etc) but it’s not because I NEED to sell them. They can remain there for all I care, my life continues. I’d say stop smoking that “weed” and get a better job, then you wouldn’t “need” to sell your collection. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

I strayed from amassing a physical collection very early on before it got out of hand. I quickly realized that it’s not about shelving games as a collector but playing them as a gamer, which is what I am. I sold my humble collection and transitioned to getting flash carts and modded consoles because at the end of the day, I just want to play my games without them consuming a great amount of space in my house and spending a great deal of money - especially in this day and age.

Exactly! So many collectors I see in modern times seem to have lost sight of the whole reason to pick up games. Or another way to put it is: I’m a gamer first, a collector second. Once I came to that realization, the desire to pick up games melted away. I still have most of my games from my childhood but truthfully, I never use those anymore more. If I wanna play Earthbound, there are much easier ways than modding a SNES, replacing the dead battery on my cart, and plugging it into some device so the frames look good on my modern TV.
Gamer first, that’s my motto. I hope to one day sell off my collection because when the day comes when I die, I don’t want my family having the burden of getting rid of it (because, let’s be frank, it will never mean as much to them as it once did to me).

Memory tends to be a bit fickle, you can only remember bits and pieces, ala' seconds when looking back at the games you experienced. But you forget the vast majority of it, which just sucks. Over time, those memories can become less vivid, nostalgic and powerful too. This is why video footage is just priceless, and saves or stores memories that you may of forgotten overtime. The only footage I have that my dad recorded of me gaming in the 90's, was at an Arcade room at Disney Land(When Disney's Alladin was all the rave) playing Mortal Kombat 1 in 93' against some dude in his 20's. :P

It's definitely a lot easier to let go of the 32-bit 3D consoles that's for sure. Most PS1, Saturn & N64 games are better left in the past, or at best kept as memory trophies. Even certain Dreamcast games can fall into the same category. I remember titles like Sonic Adventure, PowerStone 1&2, Soul Calibur, or even Spawn in the Demon's Hand and odd ball releases like Ready 2 Rumble Boxing being absolutely mind blowing in 99/2000. Not the case anymore.
I still struggle and tend to go back and fourth when it comes to buying the 8-16 bit stuff though. Late 80's/early 90's pop culture and the videogames within it were just too amazing.

As someone who just recently discovered your channel and has been watching all your videos, this one really hit me the most for some reason. I love all your videos and your content and the overall message of this video. I'm a retro gamer myself and although my dad never was, one thing he did do a lot of was record many family moments with his massive VHS over the shoulder camcorder lol. And one thing we always did was go to the rental store every weekend to rent a video game, grab a slice of pizza from our favorite pizza place and then he would give me some change so I could go play a song from the jukebox while we ate. That was our thing and man just watching all these videos brings it all back. But you are absolutely correct... no matter how hard we try to recreate the past, it's in the past. We gotta focus on the now and on the present.
It was never about all the games you sold, it was definitely about those moments with your dad that you were very fortunate enough to have him capture. No amount of money can every put a value on those memories.
Thank you for sharing those memories with all of us and giving us an appreciation for our gaming upbringing.
Keep up the great work! And lastly.... Your dad was just an awesome guy.

Much respect to you for putting your family first and for sharing this story 🙏🏼
I think you learned from your father's example. In the end the reason he bought you all of those games (and your family as well) and recorded all of that footage is because he loved his family ❤ That was his way of expressing it, sharing in those moments the things that he was passionate about and cultivating that love that you found as well.
I'm sure he was so humbled by the fact that you went on to pursue a film career, which was no doubt inspired by all of your exposure growing up 😅 and I'm sure he has been watching from beyond and is proud of every single decision that you have made since.
Games are just things, the memories and emotions that we have attached to them can't be sold or forgotten if that thing is gone. They exist eternally, etched in our souls.
I hope the games that you sold helped someone else to have good memories that they could make or recreate from their childhood. May your father rest peacefully 🙏🏼

Trust friend, I understand 100% where your coming from. I used to be the top gamer in my childhood circle of friends and around my early 30s I kinda dropped out of playing games the same way as I did until my late 20s, bcus life had taken me in a whole different direction. Finding your channel has helped me relive my childhood. We seriously had 90% of the same experiences with games as they came out for the 1st time while purchasing them and the experience of being happy and care free playing them. 👍😌😺

I’ve had my own long journey with collecting and the only thing I can say for sure about it is that it is a very “personal” thing. We can relate to other collectors, but there is no “set of rules” to collecting the “right way”. The only “rule” we should all agree on is that a collector should be responsible with their spending and their mental health.
We all know, as collectors, how the hunt for that dopamine hit you get when acquiring a new piece can lead to bad habits, especially when you are experiencing a stressful period in your life. I can only imagine how the realities of being a content creator here could complicate this further.
Tyler, thank you for telling the story of your collection “reset”…it is an important story for the collecting community to hear, especially for the young guys coming into it. We have, in recent years, heard similar stories from Riff at Pixel Game Squad and Dan at Toy Galaxy...and now yours.
I’ve never had to hard reset, but, on a smaller scale, I did have to train myself to be aware of knowing the difference between “collecting for enjoyment” and “collecting for distraction”…Even to the point of walking away from “good deals” because I knew my state of mind for the purchase was not in the right place. And even though, in those moments, it caused me some initial stress to walk away, the ultimate feeling of self-control was rewarding…and was good for my self-esteem.
The momentum that collecting can sweep a person into is an elemental force. It can carry one away like a flash flood if they are not careful. If the “clean slate” approach is the best way to get back to solid footing for some, I respect that.
It is good to hear this aspect of the collecting lifestyle thoughtfully, responsibly, and respectfully discussed. Thank you Tyler.

You kind of hit the nail on the head of what’s at issue with collecting: it’s a dopamine hit. If that’s how you are getting your pleasure in life, what you are saying is “I get my dopamine pleasure by buying stuff”. That’s literally the definition of materialism. Sorry to say but that’s not a great way to seek pleasure in life, for MANY reasons.

For every 1 story like this, I hear 10 others say they regret getting rid of their collections, and many end up trying to repurchase them again. I'm keeping mine forever, even through those spots where life pulls me away for a time. Gaming is timeless and ageless, just as is music or cinema.

You are right, most of the collectors in this hobby would never dream of ending physical collecting. But you should ask yourself, why are you doing it? Is it because you love games or because you love stuff? Because, in 2023, you don’t need to have a basement full of old media to play the games you love. I don’t mean to be harsh but what you are describing is materialism, not a love of games. They are related but separate.

      It depends, I think.
It's all about figuring out the purpose of why you bought stuff. If the item served its purpose already, it's better to get rid of it to make more room for new things. Who knows? Maybe what makes him happy is actually the act of buying new games, sharing them with someone and documenting it.
Besides, you can alway re-buy retro games but when that happens you're at least you're going in with the mentality of buying the games that really matter.

Joe Estrada I agree. I think it's about using the collection wisely and not have it use up all your time. I still have my childhood collection of games and I keep them not only because it makes me smile when revisiting them (I believe revisiting childhood joy is very beneficial to our mental health) but also new generations can look at them and be curious to play them so the interest continues on. But everyone has their reasons and I personally would never part with my collection.

During the past 10 to 15 years, I've barely even touched my video game collection, yet I will not sell! And, no, I never moved on to modern games--I simply do not play any video games anymore. I quit games around 2002 because I didn't like 32 bit games and was getting burned out on the old ones.
I fondly remember the days of Sega vs. Nintendo, Turbo Grafx 16, N64, and the promise of 3DO, Jaguar and even the Commodore CD32. Those last 2 systems I never owned.
My greatest fun was playing the Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts and also loved the Turbografx 16! I only purchased a handful of 3DO games but pretty much stayed away from anything newer. I just wasn't impressed with the newer games and especially 32-bit (or more) game music. I really love the sound of 8 bit and even 16 bit games. Newer games just didn't have the right sound for my ears! The older ones left more to the imagination.
I was never impressed by Nintendo's Cruisin' USA's generic music and game play. I tried sony's Ridge Racer, and same thing. Square's original Rad Racer for Nintendo, however, was the bomb. I also loved the music and game play of the Nes game Batman. 8-bit sound seems more intense and more computer like, so in that sense, more modern. 32 bit sound seemed either poorly produced or childish. That's just my opinion.
My Collection remains in multiple carefully stored boxes. One day, when I feel the time is right, could be 5 or 10 years from now, who knows, a most amazing experience awaits me! In the meantime, I'm so glad I have my games!

This has to be the most profound and meaningful video game collecting video I have ever watched. I get it. After I lost my dad and my cousin, whom were the key people in my life for collecting video games, passed away within 5 years of each other. I realized, I kept collecting to keep them alive in my heart. But after awhile, I realized I couldn't bring them back through collecting that which we shared growing up with. They will always live on in my memories and heart. Now, I play once in awhile, the games we played together, while we were young and loving video games. Life goes on and we all need to love and focus on the ones that are still in our lives to this day. And yes Tyler, it is all OK you got rid of those games. You will forever have those things in you head and heart.

When i pickup a item from my childhood it triggers a memory (nostalgia), without that item the memory gets forgotten about as time passes and you get older. Its that same feeling you get when you look at a old childhood photo, it reminds you of things you had long forgotten. I am not trying to relive the past, i am making new memories but that doesn't mean due to this i need to sell off all my old stuff, once gone it cannot be replaced. Game collections date badly, as we are spoilt by modern games but other collectibles are still just as relevant today as 20+ years ago.

The most picturesque resort imaginable. To this day I still like to check price charting and imagine what my collection would be worth today. But I leave it at that. Amazing video! Much respect to you! Honestly, it's ok to keep some of your memories. I'm a 53 year old Dad of 2, and raised and put both of my daughters thru college. The kids grow up and move on to their own lives, and it happens FAST. I started collecting comic books & sports cards at the age of 7 (mid 1970's), and then video games in late 1970's. I even had the original Pong game that was a black box with 6 D batteries attatched to the tv set. My first main gaming system was a Commodore 64, then Intellivision 2, Atari, NES, and etc., etc. I was the kid that always took care of his things....LOL!! I still have all those items and all the original Star Wars figures (with all weapons). Like you mentioned earlier each item hold memories! You a part of the Family equation too, so it's ok to hold on to some items without feeling a need to get rid of them based on life changes! Speaking from experience. Excellent video, and topic!

I can see the bright side of letting go. Like you said, starting fresh, enjoying the now, living for the now. It's hard to have a good present and future when you're stuck holding on to the past. Another positive to see it as is, you enjoyed the games and really the time, people, and memories it held but like you said as well, that feeling can't be relived. It's time to pass on that happiness the game holds to someone else who can experience it.

I realized I was at a point where I was buying video games for multiple consoles and not even playing them. I was busy working or socializing. It became a money pit and just wasn't worth it anymore. I still game but decided to focus on PC gaming since I work in computers anyway. Doing that suited my minimalist lifestyle much more too. I’m so sorry that you lost your dad. I grew up on the 80’s and 90’s and was into video games a whole lot. But even though my dad and I related to each other a little, I don’t think it was anywhere as much as you and your dad. I really admire you’re strength in being able to let go. Moving on and changing is a VERY difficult. I do still have my dad, but my career in film and television has largely completely tanked, and I’ve been pretty lost for at least the past 5 years, but really the past 10 now. One thing I keep in mind though, is to remember the good that you do have, and try not to be extreme or absolute about things. At one point in the mid-90’s, I sold virtually all of my video games, video game systems, and accessories, just yo have the money to buy an original PlayStation. In retrospect, I sort of regret that a little now. But I did hold on to my SNES, which was my very favorite system, and my 5 favorite games. So you can still move on, but still hold on to a little bit of your past without getting rid of all of it.

This really hit me at the perfect time. I’m struggling with this decision lately in terms of spending more time with and expanding my family. The collection feels like a burden more times than a hobby and my kids could care less about anything older then the switch. Potentially getting out now while the market is hot could not only free that burden but also set up my family for other financial success. I’m torn, but I really appreciate you sharing

Do what you gotta do man! Your family will bring you so much more fulfillment than any collection will. That's not to say don't have hobbies, but it's family first! Maybe just keep what is meaningful to you? I know a lot of collector's frown at things like emulation, but once you're in there playing the game with a good emulator, the experience is essentially the same.

So it seems like anytime I walk past them I see money sitting on a shelf which stinks because I really like having and playing these games. I am not even hurting for cash or anything like that. I sold my game collection that went back to the GameCube and PS2 days. It does start to feel unhealthy, especially that feeling of not wanting to let go. Game collecting was fun in my youth but I had to turn a page in life. I still play games but I try to rid of myself of that impulse feeling of wanting every game that just remotely interests me. There not enough time.

The Bible is right about everything lol, we just don't like to admit it. We know it's not good to store up all that treasure, we can't take it with us, and usually family fights over it lol, i already had a niece rivalry over my RecRoom Masters Xtensions Jr cabinet lol.
Money and all this material stuff really does end up owning us if we are not careful and it damaged relationships, it's just unhealthy man.

I'm the exact opposite. Growing up I gave away, sold, threw away old games. I wish I would've saved every single last one of them.
I think we have a different relationship with games. Games were a you and your dad thing.
For me it was an escape. Growing up my dad was abusive to my mom. Arguing and hitting was the norm. Link, my pokemon and sonic literally were my best friends. They were the hero's that took me away from the screaming and crying. To this day I have a huge emotional attachments to these characters.
As a 30 year old I now collect retro and modern games with my wife and kids. They know how much it means to me and I know ill NEVER sell them.

Games are a good escape, but can become unhealthy since they are only temporary, you know that feeling when you finish a game and have nothing left to do? Like a sinking "what now?" feeling? Jesus fills that void, this is why all these rich rappers and whatnot are really miserable and they say as much.

I get what you're saying. I have a different kind of nostalgia on retro gaming. I came from a family that opened a gameshop in some Asian country , where ppl would come in and paid to play with one of our consoles and TVs. We had around 15 of them. At a very young age, around 11,12 ,I was pretty much the "CEO" of the shop who made all the decisions of what games or consoles to get to attract customers, since the adults was having a hard time to keep up with the trends. At the same time I was "technician" when it came to walkthru on platformers, special moves when it came to fighting games. Every once in a while, ppl paid for the hour without playing, they just wanted to see me pull out the mortal kombat's fatalities. I was also interpreter when it came to visual novels genre ,etc. When time changed, business changed. We got rid of all the japanese authentic catridges to play those chinese 20, 50, 100-in-1 ones on the famicom. We started using floppy discs for the super famicom, and so on. Just like those dvd store that sold bootlegs back then. it's sad to see them gone but we did what we had to do to survive, right? After a while, gaming became my obligation since we ran a business. But I still loved gaming and used to play my own games at night when shop closed. Then came the golden age of arcade gaming, we struggled to live by until the ps1 came into the scene to save the day.
I'm in canada now.Nowadays I wish I still had some games but everytime I think back of it, I really enjoyed my times around the customers. I loved making a kid's day when I lead him thru beating ninja gaiden. I never got to play a console game together with a friend but we instead had fun together at the arcade centers. Those times we traveled on a bus together for an hour an a half to somewhere that had a racing games that we liked. Gaming's not all about smashing buttons . I remember we took boxing class together so that we could do better at those punching arcades, or the fun when we shot the hell outta zombies at those gun arcades , and all the cool dance moves we were able to pull. Good times.
I actually have a decent video game collection from the GBA up since I got here in Canada. Pretty rare stuffs ,like castlevanias, ninja five o on the GBA, God's hand, haunting ground ,on the ps2. But life got in the way and I had to give them up at some point. nowadays I only have ps2 up. Some games I own are considered rare, such as: Lost in the rain - Hong Kong verion (ps3). But it's getting harder and harder to go back into gaming since I only play alone nowadays. I am working two jobs and having a family to take care off. Now that I'm downsizing to around 200 next gen video games on the ps2 ps3 ps3 and xbox360 altogether , 400 vcds/dvds/vhs/laser discs of Asia cinema, around 300 mangas. Their worth range from 50 to 500 dollars. I do own the rarest books out there from day one. Maybe in the next 10 years I will sell all of them. I;ve been collecting and been around the scene for the last 25-30 years but never considered it a thing , even when it became a thing nowadays. It's also very hard to go back to watch some old movies knowing that your once beloved actor/actress have shown their true colours over the years to actually be a jerk, a bitch, a bully, a traitor, all kinda things. One day the collection will all be gone but memories will live forever. Even if I was fed up with videogames sometimes and wish I could go hang out with friends during summertime instead of watching the shop. But I was also proud and happy that I helped my family putting foods on the table.
