I was born in late 80's, grew up hearing Saigal Sahab, Rafi Sahab, Kishore Da, Manna Da, Hemanta da etc. So kindly get rid of this mindset that you have been harbouring thus far. I have even seen some 21st century kids develop a liking for these old gems. As far as I am concerned, my heart and my soul still dwells in the older era, the golden era of Indian music.

There’s a very sad story behind this song. Saigal used to drink and drink and then face the mike to sing because his so called friends had made him believe that his voice would be more powerful and melodious after he drank. Naushad who composed this song begged him to sing it without drinking and then sing again after drinking. He listened to Naushad and when he noticed the difference between them where the song recorded without drinking was far superior poor Saigal burst into tears and cried over Naushad,s shoulders and told him that you came too late in my life. This film was released in 1946 and Saigal died after a few months
Nausad sahab was a very pious soul. He greatly respected and enriched our Indian classical music.

If Naushad considered him as an all time great,there can be no better appreciation.Legend whom Naushad met so late ,otherwise more marvels would have definitely followed.Iam 70 now used to listen to my dad humming this way back in late50s,60s.....My dad had a striking resemblance to KLS , the lips shape hair mid partition(a wig in case of kls),eyes height etc....

Yes. It was a really beautiful song. I was 9 years old when saigal died on January 18 1947. I was in old Delhi. Along with millions of people I wept openly that day.
My father was Station Master at Sandila near Lucknow, in1946-47 at that time Dr. Kotnis and Sehnai(old) was shown in Lucknow. My father sent me and my elder sister and younger brother along with an ASM to Lucknow to show us these films. It was perhaps 18 Jan. 1947.When we reached picture Hall's. the halls were closed to mourn the death of Shri K L. Saigal. this was perhaps no other filmi hero got that honour.

I am a fifteen year old that has written a book about K L Saigal, that sings his songs and is probably the biggest fan of him especially in my age group. He is the utmost highest kalakaar there ever will be and sadly we lost him so early even before independence of India yet still his legacy will live on. Saigal sahab has no parallel. The void left by him can never be filled. The fan strength may be small in number, but very hard core loyals. It is unfortunate that he passed away very very early when he was 42. Blame is given to alcoholism; but there must be strong reasons which were not noted or cared by his near and dear.
Resultantly, his fans are feeling the void.
It was lack of awareness in those times ..that Alcoholism is a disease like Diabetes ....a blood chemistry disorder as WHO has also declared only in 1980's ...A physical allergy to a chemical substance ...which no medicine can cure ..only abstinence from the substance can control..
