Abandoned BORIANA MINE | Our First OFF-ROAD Adventure! | Hualapai Mountains, Arizona

  • Today we head off on a new adventure - off-roading for the first time to an old abandoned tungsten mine high up in the Hualapai Mountains of Northern Arizona. What we found astounded us! Old structures & goldfish? You have to see this!
High in the hills of the Hualapai Mountains sits the abandoned remains of an old mine - the Boriana Mine. Producing mainly tungsten with smaller deposits of copper and beryllium, the mine was considered relatively successful during its active years - from 1915 to 1980. The most productive period of the mine was 1915-1918 when it was one of the leading producers of tungsten in the state of Arizona. Much of the material mined out went on to support World War I.
To reach the Boriana Mine remnants, one must drive up a 14.4-mile dirt and rock road. At the time we went, we fully recommend a high-clearance vehicle. While 2WD might be able to make the trip, 4WD is advised. Due to the monsoonal and heavy rains we sometimes experience in Arizona, large rocks and washouts can sometimes occur.
One of the biggest surprises we experienced while there, aside from the old wooden and metal remains from the site's mining history was a freshwater pond fed by a spring. Within the pond are schools of goldfish happily swimming along. Who would have guessed that goldfish could be found in the high desert of Arizona?

Now we know how old Slim is. That all started up there as a gold mine. Then it became slim pickens.😊 For years the gold miners battled this heavy mineral that they finally had analysis done on and found out it was tungsten. Some of what you see up there is remnants from the gold era and the rest from the tungsten. That big area was a step down mill. We miners like to use gravity. Cheaper to roll things down the hill than push it up. You had pictures of it at the beginning. Further up the hill was where they came back to mine during WW2. Lots of history there. Glad to see Slims first adventure. Tell him i said them Mohave county pinstripes do buff out. Drone is cool also. A little secret about them which im sure you know by now, is they'll only fly as far as the batteries lets them. Then its all down hill.😊😂

😂😂 Luckily we've had decent luck with keeping an eye on the battery life and don't push things too much. Appreciate the history of the mine there! 😄👍

Thanks for your videos. I share them with my daughter to show her how much fun it is to travel and explore! I bet the goldfish are there to keep mosquitoes at bay. The pond looks very still- a perfect mosquito breeding ground. Maybe ranchers put them there in an attempt to keep the cattle safe from mosquito borne illness.

Let some pressure out of your tyres not heaps just a bit. You get better grip ,less chance of punchers and smoother ride . Cool vid man. The good old wash-outs can get huge. Also when your in 4wd driving on hard road you don't won't to be turning your wheel to much under acceleration .

I told you that you needed one of those. You can capture some really dramatic footage and now you can take threading the needle to a whole new level! As far as Slim goes, I think it works. You should look into getting the truck wrapped with some Cactus Atlas logo stuff...do you smell tax write-off? And when you run up against any of the sagebrush and whatnot that's just called "desert pinstriping" and you should wear it as a badge of honor!!

    • @CactusAtlas

Haha! I'm sure the pin striping will happen... just feels too early on a brand new truck to wear that badge just yet. 😅 We're just as excited about the drone too. Really looking forward to what other things we can find out there.

So glad to go along with you on your maiden voyage of the new truck AND the new drone. You need this truck to carry all that camping gear you have been acquiring lately. I know guys love to go bouncing down these 4 wheel roads but it isn't much fun for the passenger. In February when we drove down Titus Canyon/Death Valley in our Toyota 4 Runner I said no more for me.😉

    • @brianwilliams3146
      @brianwilliams3146 Рік тому +1

@@CactusAtlas The gazelle tent is super easy to put up. It also has a lot of room to stand up. However, part of the reason it is easy to set up is that it is over 60 inches long when it is put away. That can be tricky if packing into a car, but your truck bed is a perfect spot to carry it. I use one, and I think it is the best ground tent out there.

Anyways keep up good work and congrats on new truck and drone.

Slim fits IMHO. Now all you need is a Good Air Compressor. Buy once cry once. Airing Down your tires will save Your Back, tires, cargo & Truck. Will you be saving up for a bed cover or topper?
Get an Air Sampler if you're Seriously thinking about checking out old mines & Never throw a rock into water in a mine. Breaking the surface tension Can Release Poisonous Gases. Canaries in mines ain't just folklore.
Think I'd be more worried about Birds attacking & people taking the drone out. If you're worried about scratching Slim look into a wrap to Try & Prevent scratches for trade in. I call fancy trucks that don't hit trails Mall Crawler's.
Just wondering how you talked Amy into letting you get Slim 🙄🤭
