It’s pretty tough to choose, so many beautiful sounds. I think that custom ratchet was my favorite to see, and the wind gong is just such an incredible sound. But ultimately it’s a thousand way tie.
I play trumpet but i love percussionists, the way you guys think about sound and choice of instrument is so great. I just love the way everything is just different choices, not good or bad sounds.
I absolutely love classical music. This is literally the life I wish I had if I had to do it all over again. I think it's also the life my parents probably wished for me too. Alas. Thank you for this fantastic and fascinating tour. I can see and hear a lot of the instruments Mahler used in his symphonies (including that mallet). And to Mr. Howard, wishing you many years of continued success. You have a dream job.
23:22 is my wheelhouse! I’ve been a timpanist since late 2010 and it is by far my favorite instrument to play! I actually have 3 pairs from the Joe Pereira line from JGPercussion and will order a 4th once it is back in stock.
I was a percussionist from 5th grade through high school, always so much fun… knew from instrument tryout day I’d be a bad wind player and enjoyed hitting things!😂 I miss being on drumline and playing in concerts, Timpani was always my favorite since you’re often encouraged to do big loud solos. New to the channel, love this video!
This is a real cool video, I like it a lot. I'm a Rock-Drummer by all means but I have a soft spot for classical percussion, maybe from listening a lot to Emerson, Lake & Palmer in my youth! Thank you, Jake!
I love this! I wish we had even a quarter of what you guys have. We have 1 of most things. It’s common nowadays that I bring my own equipment which is sometimes higher quality than what the ensembles have.
Terrific video. Thanks to Jake and Matt. As far as my favorite instrument goes, I have to go with the huge wind gong. Honorable mention goes to a non-instrument: those drawers.
Very cool, thanks! I'm curious to know who decides which of the 17 snare drums or dozen triangles etc gets used for a particular pice. Guessing maybe the percussionists choose, but the conductor maybe makes suggestions if they want a different color?
Hey, I went to Hamilton high! On Robertson Boulevard hammi high we called it!!!!…. Mr.Farrah was the band director and the orchestra director of course this within the 1960s go hammi!! I was in the marching band in the orchestra. Do they still have those funky gray and green suits that we have a ton?
Absolutely awesome video! I come from a concert band / orchestral background so this was like watching a "toy" commercial. That point at the end about muffling / dampening drums. I get so tired of the "just learn to tune" crowd. Some times a wide open Simon Phillips sound isn't what's needed.
What's your favorite percussion instrument in this video?

The giant marimba
Turkish Crescent of course -- you'll look so cool playing it! The wind gong a close 2nd.
23:05 when he played those deep Marimba tones (listening with headphones) I got goosebumps. Such a full and room-filling sound!!
Yeah! That’s an amazing instrument!
The best mallet instrument!
Classically trained flutist here - I know nothing about percussion but here I am and this is SUPER fun to watch!

unironically, the triangle lesson was very helpful!
Holy smokes this was so good. About to show it to my 5yo who loves the LA Phil

Awesome video - Matt is cool 😊 thanks
Violist here. Love to hear percussion. Your cabinet is awesome!

Very rad video.
I was eager to see and hear the rainstick... Do you have a circular one? Haha, all jokes aside, incredible video, really liked it!
The effortless tambourine rolls 🤌
Great video.
Those sounds are so cinematic.
tons of toys what a great room thanks for sharing

Totally agree!
It’s like the Shelly Manne perc hall on steroids. I want to hear everything in this video lol
You talked a lot about sound of each instrument. Who decides what sound is suited for each piece? Director or principal percussionist?
okay, top of your field is cool, but can you alternate porgy? 🤣
Didn't see the bicycle from Zappa...
I'll give you $5,000 for the entire room of stuff !! 😊
