    Decades past one of my 2 best buddies/med school classmates was a guy from Nigeria that already had an advanced degree and had been teaching pharmacology at a US medical school but was rejected as an applicant to the same school. I recall shaking my head wondering how they deemed him good enough to teach their students but not good enough to become a student there. We knew lots of super smart people from multiple countries, multiple walks of life that could not get in.

    • @larrydunn4626

      you seem to assume getting into medical school is about being super smart... There are at least 1000 universities and colleges that prepare their graduates for medical school. Assuming we only consider the top 5% of graduates based on GPA, there are tens of thousands of "super smart" graduates each year. Let's say only 20% have the med school science pre-reqs.... we're still talking tens out thousands! And most of them go into consulting, finance., law school, MBA school, or academic graduate programs So clearly being "super smart" means little in terms of "why do you want to be a doctor?" Maybe they didn't even know themselves why they wanted to be a doctor.

    It's counter productive to critique a extremely successful application and what you found wasn't helpful to it. I feel we would have gotten more value with you actually dissecting the strengths of this application instead. One of the more important questions missed here is how this person went about picking which schools to even apply to with a 505. Since he ended up with this many interviews and acceptances. Reddit is full of 3.4gpa 518 mcat rejected from all schools. Which is why I would have liked what this man did right highlighted more. Keep it coming though I subbed.

    Do people honestly think that if admission into medical school was purely based on MCAT scores and GPA, that this would be better for patients overall? How many of those high MCAT and high GPAs will actually serve the areas that need it most? How many will go into those urban hospitals and serve a predominantly black or Hispanic community?
    And let’s not forget the implicit bias already evident in our current medical system. Look at the black maternal mortality for example. Black mothers are 3x more likely to die after childbirth than their white counterparts. Of course there are other factors that contribute to this, but historical context and access to pre and postnatal care play a factor. Will filling med schools with high MCAT scorers fix this issue?
    Lastly, why do applicants who have higher stats but don’t get in always seem to think that applicants like this young man significantly reduced their chances of getting into med school? You do realize that black students make up around 5% of acceptance when you remove the HBCUs right?
    Is affirmative action perfect? Far from it. I believe socioeconomic status should be taken into account. A black applicants with at least one parent who is a doctor is not disadvantaged compared to a poor white or poor Asian applicant.
    But let’s not reduce the achievements of this young man to just “it’s because he is black.” We still know nothing about the schools he applied to, we know nothing about his letters of recommendations, we know nothing about his secondary essays, and we know nothing about his interviews. To only focus on his MCAT and GPA and completely ignore the rest of his application and the stuff we didn’t see is just dumb.
    Stop thinking high MCAT and high GPA means you deserve an interview or an acceptance. Shitty doctors can have better stats too.

    • @andreahess2897
      @andreahess2897 5 місяців тому

      Yes, you should get an interview if you have worked hard to get top scores! Are you kidding me?? I’m not saying this gentleman doesn’t deserve his acceptances but a disadvantaged background and a good personality also does not guarantee a good doctor!! From what I understand, the system opens in May and primaries can be officially sent to schools on June 1st. That means you’re able to access the application system and put in all of your information ahead of time in May and just submit on the first of June, correct? I haven’t really seen any 6/1 or 6/2 submission dates on this channel it seems but tons between 6/5 - 6/10. Realistically, I’m sure it doesn’t make much of a difference, I’m just curious to know if there’s any particular reason. Are you not able to start filling things out until 6/1?

Vijay Chokal-Ingam's book, Almost Black: How I Got Into Medical School By Pretending To Be Black is a fascinating cultural study of discrimination within the medical school system. And before everyone starts jumping up-and-down because they scanned the comments for the word Black - I'm not saying this guy isn't a solid applicant, nor am I saying he won't make an excellent physician. I'm just wondering at a system where - if the author's experience is to be believed - candidates of certain races (such as Asians and East Indians) are discriminated against, due to their racial group being "over-represented" in med schools. I suspect it may be too controversial a topic for this thread.

    He had an average performance for a medical school matriculant. Based on his stats, that is not why he got 9 med school acceptances. Let's not sugar coat things- he got that many interviews because of his ethnicity. Average African American matriculant stats for entering med school are generally 0.2 GPA lower and 8 MCAT points lower than their white and asian peers. The irony in affirmative action is that it’s enactment was in order to combat wealth inequality that occurred because of “systematic racism”, but affirmative action is in fact systematic racism lol. Look, I don’t want to take anything from this guy. He busted ass and did what he had to do, but so long as people are getting in easier than others purely because of the color of their skin, there will be animosity in the applicant population. This isn’t some trivial matter. People are digging themselves into debt and then never getting an acceptance that they would get if they were black, effectively permanently altering the course of their life for the worse. Medicine is not a field where you should selectively lower barriers for entry. It's possible accepting a lower stat applicant in place of a higher stat applicant could result in a death down the road. I also think this is a great injustice to those URM that actually have objectively good stats when applying. Affirmative action is setting up a scenario where black physicians will have less respect in the academic and healthcare community because people know the standards for their entry were lower. I personally know an African American orthopaedic surgeon who had phenomenal stats all the way from the MCAT to STEP 2. But, that wont stop people from prejudging him because of the laws that have been enacted to lower the hurdles for URM. These laws are a lose-lose for everyone involved. “Collaboration, not Competition is key to your success”, is a nice slogan until you have to face the dark reality you may never be a Doctor because you're an ORM. I understand your why you take your stance on these issues Dr. Gray, but you have to sympathize somewhat with what I'm saying.
