Great video. One tip... Place the frame in a horizontal position on the C-Stands FIRST. Next unfold the diffusion panel until it's half folded. use these points to attach to center frame on either side (near lollipop grip). Now not only can you attach the rest of the bungee cords WHILE STANDING UP. You also prevent your diffuser from getting dirty. Grass stains sure to come this way. #FunFact: Do the entire process in reverse to put diffuser back in the bag. It will last 4x longer. Or some other arbitrary number. P.S. i've tried the method and you can literally setup and teardown by yourself faster than with two people. #FACTS Keep pumping out great content! And Thanks for stopping by. Luke Seerveld taught me! :-)
How attach it with a lillipop grip ? I search on internet too see what it is but i donc figure out how to attach it.. Can you please give me a reference ?
@@tenochaztecatl8923 put the frame on the two stands HORIZONTAL. Then start tying onto from middle. Since standa are around 5ft high minimum if you fold a 10'x10' in half it will be 5 ft. Then attach middle points to either side of the frame. Now you have a frame with a fabric attached at 2 points hanging down without touching ground. Frame is horizontal (not vertical) so you don't need a ladder. Hope this helps!
I actually liked the look of the DIY diffusion more than the $600 one lol... the expensive one definitely diffused the light more but the DIY one looked much more natural
+Film Riot Hey so at the end of the day diffusion is just the softening of light and we bring the frame or diffusion object we are using closer to the subject to soften light and diffusion is not always necessary as in some scenes we may want too have a silhouette but other than that its good to use nearly all the time
If you cut the pvc's in half and join them with a coupler, you can run a piece of bungee through the whole perimeter of the frame. That way you can break the whole thing down into a more portable package without worrying about all the parts getting separated and spending the time to hook them all back together. When you lay out the pieces, the bungee will make everything sort of pop into place, then all you have to do is stick the ends together.
I'm not even joking, I was watching this at school in the computer lab and 2:30 happened and I changed tabs so fast to make sure no one got the wrong idea.
Like the “real” vibe of the show… normally the contrived “real” doesnt come across well, but it just works for you guys!👌🏻🙂Thank you for valuable contributions to society🙏🏻
I appreciate that you taught us how to make one on a budget. I have no film making experience what so ever except what I've learned from you and others on youtube the last few months. All the lighting, equipment, etc. except for the camera, green screen and editer was made and rigged by me. It's called $0 budget. Thx. Hey I liked the shadow dancing. XD
White ripstop nylon (tents are made of this fabric) you can buy at a fabric store works great too, it is light weight and packs down really small for transport.
I have never hoped for someone's success more than I do for you Ryan and Josh. May you reach incredible Heights. Also, May there always be love between the two brothers. Major love.
- 4 x 3/4" PVC (Cut to 5 ft) - 4 x 3/4" PVC Elbows - Bed Sheet - Assemble frame into large square - Place sheet under frame - Measure the fold over and cut excess - Sew or Staple The Seams (Leave room on the corners) - Assemble similar to a tent, slide the pipes into the seams
+Juan Santos Someone already did find it. I can give you an extra clue if you want to though: Search for Film Riot Get a girlfriend (Y'know, like the bieber song. *cough* *cough*)
Maybe a tip if you want to add more stability to the DIY version, insert wooden poles into PVC poles (make sure to match the outer size of the wood to the inner size of the PVC so it fits). Get some screws and screws them in place so they dont fall out. i did this for a DIY dollytrack (which i made out of PVC those wooden poles) i made and it worked great since they dont flex as much as without the wood.
DAMN. I got to this video an hour late, because of school. I finished the rest of the scavenger hunt as best I could (it still took me 20 mins) but I'm sure many many people are there by now. Really wanted the GoPro too. Damn it - I was up at 3:30 this morning (I live in New Zealand) hoping it would come out then like the episodes usually do. Damn.
Small suggestion add 2 t-joints on the sides and some small sections with holes drilled at the bottom so you can use 2 lightstands to hold the frame up. You could even then use those t joints to help angle the skrim?
+JurassicFilmsCo I remember someone telling me it was some type of good luck charm to have in a film, but couldn't agree with you more about it pulling you out of a film for a second.
How apropos! I was just doodling some designs for a pvc skrim yesterday! I shot a wedding in an apple orchard and there was nary a cloud in the sky and the trees were not helping at all (too short). I wanted to cry. :( I also want to make one to use in the studio for a full body diffusion of my lights.
i stayed up ALL night looking at Every Freaking film riot video, and still have not found the doctor, or the clue. since you all have finished, somebody please just tell me where the doctor is!!!!!!! oh and i continued all day looking today.
Can you make diffusion fabrics with different colors? I'm doing a Killer Jack lantern sketch and was thinking about flooding a light through an orange sheet on a frame? Thoughts?
I really Love what you guys do; what you teach and how you teach it!! But I'm really more into photography and though some of what you talk about may pertain to photography the focus is still, of course, on film. I was just wondering if you guys (or anyone in this comment section) knew of any UA-cam channels that do what you guys do in terms of photography! Thanx!
Tie the frame off to stakes with rope. Good length of static rope, find the middle of said rope (mark it for future reference), clove hitch the middle to the top of the frame (the side that will be at the top), and tie of the frame to the stakes. Safety first, these suckers can hurt.
Love the show, you guys do a genuine public service and we're grateful for it. One criticism - you've used the famous image from "La Voyage Dans La Lune" (French film, 1902) to illustrate "Hollywood techniques" in the opening titles. Seems like a weird connection to use, given that it wasn't made with Hollywood techniques.
LOL Josh's ending. But hey, did you ever consider (on the DIY system, at least) slicing the sheet in a few places? I get the feeling that it wouldn't change your lighting much, but would greatly reduce the sailing away dangers... :)
Any tips on hair continuity? we started filming a huge project a while back and are just now wrapping it up, and one of our main actors in the films hair has gotten a lot longer.. We can redo the first parts which insnt much, but is that the only way to do it lol? and hahaha josh...
How would you go about attaching the DIY to a light stand or c stand? Use a clamp or something? I wouldn't want to DIY and save cash just to use a $100 clamp to hold it. That make sense?
Ryan et al could have actually shown us how to attach it, eh? Or even HAVE SOME LINKS IN THE DESCRIPTION! I've seen diffusion screens on set, and they are commercial expensive ones. I think like the $600 one, they use special clamps etc. I also think it would be great to have it overhead, and tiltable. Def know you MUST have one or two grips along each side of the diffusion screen, BECAUSE THESE ARE THE SAME PRINCIPLE that sailboats use to propel their boats! These cannot be used if there is any significant wind.
I really like this idea, but can't help but feel that it would be simpler to build a double bed size PVC frame and use a double size fitted white sheet as a diffuser or a black sheet as negative fill.
I would recomend on the DIY diffusion thing to make a cross in the middle of it using 4 T connections to make it sturdier and also having another place to hold. (Y)
hello sir what material of shower curtain is good for diffussion?? i buyed a shower curtain and its like white plastic sheet its a peva material . what material would you reccommend?
Hey Ryan can you please show us how to do a spiderman web effect with out using any "add on's" in after effects. Only using the plain, normal defaulted.....after effects.
Awesome Scavenger hunt Guys! Thanks for putting this on! Congratulations to whoever won, I know I came in way behind anyone else. Once you figure the clues out, you feel really dumb. :-)
I live in London so I never needed a diffuser
Lol
I get it
Living in London means never having to say you're sorry. Say hi to Kate for me. I'm better than that prince guy. Seriously, I am...
I can relate 😂
Try being more creative ... you might need.🙌🥂

what? I’m a lil lost by the wording but sounds helpful

I always watch these like "Awesome I'm going to make that" then never do! 😂😂

+TrueMOBSTER Puhreese mistah, what about the frugal shoulder rig? Using the heat gun and things! That was too cheap and fun to resist/
That makes you a 'pro-crastinator'.
The Sam for me
me too lol
I actually liked the look of the DIY diffusion more than the $600 one lol... the expensive one definitely diffused the light more but the DIY one looked much more natural
+BKMPictures The difference was mostly due to the positioning of the sun with the different shots. They were done 2 hours apart.

Yeah good idea. But WAY more expensive.
On the DIY you can also make each side of the frames in 2 pieces with a pvc connector so that it will break down even smaller to fit in your bag.
My green screen stand, a white sheet, and some clamps works like a charm when in a crunch.
I have never hoped for someone's success more than I do for you Ryan and Josh.
May you reach incredible Heights. Also, May there always be love between the two brothers. Major love.
That intro, watched it 50 times... "Today on Film Riot we diffuse some shit"

Excellent idea. A better idea: use schedule 40 3/4 or even 1 inch PVC. Or even electrical conduit. They make 90 degree angles for those.

You can also use a frosted shower curtain liner for indoors or outdoors DIY diffusion
What's with all the shower curtain suggestions? Do you collect them? Weird.
Thanks, Rayn! Please, could you tell me what kind of fabric did you use to make the diffuser?
These guys used a white bed sheet, looks like. I'd go to Joann and shop around. Their method wastes a lot of material.

Thank you for a DIY video!! Keep it up

haha the ending made me giggle! :D
Hey Ryan. do you edit, 1080 footage in 720p so you can crop but export back in 1080?
You can crop when you edit in 1080.... You'll just loose quality.
