I have so may random electronics pieces (usb ports, LEDs, etc) I've collected over the years that I could send you. I'm probably never going to do anything with them. Also, in true Luke fashion, you looked right down the emitter. Good thing you didn't turn it on. lol. Also, too late now since everything is superglued in place, but I would have made the opening below the drain go side-to-side (and could become a pseudo cross guard) rather than up and down. I would love to build a light saber in homage to Gundam Wing's Epyon's beam saber. It just looks mean and awesome.
@carlyking that would make a really cool lightsaber now you just need the lightsaber electronics and a blade then it can be a heavy dulling lightsaber (Also you would make a powerful Jedi or sith and I love your lightsaber tutorial's too they are very handy for me for when I get my lightsaber
You should totally send your design to a lightsaber company so that they can build an electronic one for you based on this hilt you just made. Cause that looks so rad.
I was going to say, this is a great addition to your content. And it really came out nice! I want that saber. You’re designing a chassis and installing electronics for the next video right? No pressure. 😉
When I was in middle school I wanted to build my own lightsaber. I went to the hardware store with my mom, and we saw someone we knew and they asked what I was building, but I was very embarrassed because I'd been made fun of for my love of Star Wars in the past and I didn't wanna tell them I was building a lightsaber. I never finished the build as I wasn't happy with the parts I was finding. Looking back I wish I had finished it, and I wish I hadn't been so ashamed of my passions. I love this video. It's bringing me so much joy.
It would be so cool if you picked it back up or started over and maje it! Take a supportive friend with you who also loves the idea. Maybe that helps staying motivated at the store. You can do it! We are rooting for you! 😊👍
It is your destiny, confusion leads to fear, fear leads to anger. Settle down your emotions and build your sabre, otherwise you will be tempted by the dark side of the force
I don’t think I’ve clicked on a video so fast before. This brings me back to when I used to build sabers using parts from Home Depot and Lowe’s. I still have my first kitchen sink saber that has gone through many changes for almost a decade, just have to leather wrap mine and possibly get it installed.
@ That’s awesome! Better than I could do. I just ended up using PVC with colored duct tape for my blades as I wanted to film with them. But now, I want to do an actual install with professional electronics.
While I also used to do the spray and run method, a good friend with lung issues reminded me that "they also sell respirators at the hardware store." Love the project results too!
Great comment! We only get one set of lungs! I highly recommend the 3M 6500QL quick latch respirators. Releases easily with the flick of a lever / bracket so you can talk to someone easier. Lightweight, comfortable, and affordable.
I have to say that this is the best custom lightsaber build that I have ever seen. It looks amazing Carly! Magnificent job at constructing your new lightsaber! Your skills are complete! Indeed, you are powerful as we all have foreseen.
Another form of the spray paint weathering is to spray it on and then immediately wipe off as much as you can. This leaves the paint in the low spots where dirt and grime would naturally accumulate and you preserve the surface finish of the material.
Hey Carly, as a professional Scrap Saber builder myself, I can suggest what kind of sink tube you'll need, and you can use a metal pipe cutter to cut the tube into the length you'll need for a sink tube lightsaber and those kinds of light weight tubes would be in the plumbing section on bottom shelf, you would have to do some drilling and using a threader to be able to put screws in it to hold the parts you'll be using together, but it will be worth it afterwards, you'll have a sore wrist for a bit, but it would be worth it.
Hey Carly, it's me again, for the area where to grip the saber, might I recommend in getting a leather wrap from Michaels to wrap around the that mid-section of your scrap saber.
I got a chuckle out of it too. Back in my day we just stayed in the room huffing the fumes while it dried....builds character, kills the brain cells that are slacking off, good times all around lol
Spectacular build , Carley. Your enthusiasm for creativity is infectious! I'd love to see this prop complete with an illuminated tube and light source. Kudos to you for switching on the creative side of mind, too! ❤️
Ahhh, the good old Chaos Black finger tips! Every time I take models out to prime I inevitably end up with them. Awesome build! I need to make my own saber some day.
Great job! Looks awesome! Since I am disabled, I decided to build a lightsaber cane. I started with an old flashlight handle. I found clear PVC type tubing for the blade. I added a battery pack and some switches. Attached a led light strip to a thin piece of wood and a cane tip to the bottom.
@@mikestubblefield4978 that's awesome! Definitely gives me some inspiration for my cane too. I have a 90's military angled flashlight that would work perfect for a handle piece too!

Du hast das sehr gut gemacht. Mit kleinen Mitteln etwas schönes erschaffen. Die Idee mit der Kette finde ich gut. Auch das du überlegt hast das Schwert älter aussehen zu lassen. Du hattest gute Ideen.
the best thing about this is with the availablilty of removeable cores and blades, it's just one step away from converting it to a fully usable saber. nice!
I’ve seen this done by someone years ago and it sparked something amazing. I went and did it myself and it was magical. Unfortunately it is gone now and I stopped thinking about it. Until now. You’ve built something so unique and beautiful. I think I want to try my hand at making a new one. The threaded rod is the best way to go. It worked for Obi Wan’s ANH hilt and works beautifully for a DIY project 🤗
Seeing you get excited about a sink drain and then not being able to find another one on your own was the Joy and adventure I wish I could still find in my life haha
Did this myself a few years back and included an optional extension because I prefer the weight and balance of a pike. So much fun to do tbh, I recommend it for everyone
My only lightsaber build was just after Phantom Menace when I was invited to a costume party and wanted to go as padawan Obi-Wan. I had no budget, so I had to scrounge for materials and as such the costume itself really looked like a cut rate version of the original. For the lightsaber I only had a length of wood which my teacher in wood shop ran through the lathe (despite being in my late teens we were not allowed near the thing) until it somewhat resembled the design, which I then painted with coloured markers and stuck a thumb tack into the side for the activation switch, snipped a safety pin in half and pounded the spring half into the bottom, then used a keyring loop to act as the attachment to the belt. The whole thing was probably 3/4 or 3/5 scale, but I didn't have the time or budget to do anything about that. I still have that thing somewhere in the mess of my home.
This reminds me of the Adam Savage lightsaber build, it's really cool to know that all of the old lightsaber hilt props in the original movies were literally made out of hardware parts like you are buying and the pommel was like a sink faucet dial.
Sweet! I built a lightsaber out of a solid tube of aluminum 1 summer while working at a machine shop during college-but I never completed it. There's no way to 100% finish it now, but your video has inspired me to take it as far as I can go by redoing some items and touching it up with a bit of paint. All the scrap pieces I used were free so I guess my budget is for paint, a brush and some super glue. As it was a labor of love, the hours I spent don't count-but it was more than a 1 day build!
A lady after my own heart. This video was an absolute joy to watch. Well done on such a great looking prop. I can definitely see a Darth King wielding that saber. Scratch building stuff is just the best. I love seeing everyday boring objects and imagining them as something so much cooler. You’ve inspired me to have a go at building my own unique saber. Then I’ll get my kids to do the same. “Like my father before me “😂. New sub from me. Keep it up. All the best.
Sometimes.....what gives a neat effect is spray a gloss coat first( it helps with colour saturation) then spray the dull coat over that to give nice final surface sheen
Hi Carly, Stumbled onto this video, and am admittedly a Star Wars geek. And I have made a few attempts a make my own Saber; once as a teen, but I lacked the skills and funds. Then another time with friends a number of years back; that time I got stuck on over perfection, since I've got a number of electronics and other hobby skills. I've got that old Saber floating around here somewhere, but it's a bit thin I think (used 1 in metal conduit). But I might try again after watching your video. I've seen people use drains, and I really like the metal conduit component... I may copy at least the top of your Saber. I'll admit, I wasn't at first a fan of you painting your whole Saber, but in the end, it actually looks great. But thanks for the video, and for the inspiration.
I built one back in 2000. Found some small pulley wheels and alternated sizes and connected them together with a threaded rod. I used that portion for the upper body of my saber. Gave it a look like Luke's ROTJ saber.
First time seeing your video!!! I'm impressed with anyone that love to use they created side and making things. I was try to make a hot plastic injector for molding, the stuff that I bought off the shelf just didn't work out quite right with my imagination. Only equipment I had was a drill press trying to mill with it. If I were you I would use the Hollow flashlight housing modify the bottom of the screws and modify the top the screw to fit to imagination it would have been much cheaper.
Hey Carly, I want to start by saying that looks amazing! Reminds me of when I was in high school and my friends and I did similar builds. I am not sure if anyone suggested this to you or not but a black wash would accomplish similar effect that you were going for. It is my preferred method for weathering myself. I suggest it because I know you were struggling with getting the paint out of the spots on the bottom.
Fun!! As a kid in 1984.i was 8yrs old.the toy lightsabers looked nothing like the movie sabers..i took plumbing parts from my dads junk pile.and slapped it all together and used a fiberglass rod for the blade.
it cracks me up to know that the original lightsaber that first appeared with SW:EP4 was the handle from an old camera, and its managed to somehow capture the imagination of the entire world. - Something a lot of people don't know about movie making, especially when it comes to landscapes, details & props... less is definitely more. There isn't a lot of detail in a working prop, regardless of its size. Yours looks pretty good. 😀
I have one still in making. I started a few years ago at building one long and two short bladed sabers. Custom everything, foam outside and firm inside so it spreads the light nicely and you can hit eachother without worry. This is actually the part I struggle the most with. How to design a nice looking handle. You make it look effortless.
This was so fun. I spent hours in a Lowes a few years agotrying to build Han Solo's droid caller. I still have it and it's my first true "from-scratch" prop. Great Job!
Wow! Turned out great! I think it would look good with a brown, dark grey or black leather wrap. I hope that you can add electronics to it! Would be so cool to have a switch and maybe a small light coming from the emitter! What color blade would you have/want?
Gotta say this turned out really good, and I thought the chain was a nice addition as well. And there's nothing I like more than strolling around the hardware or craft store looking for random parts I can use in scratchbuilding.
Nice job! I like the shopping for parts. I would have added a twisted wire covering. The weathering was very cool. Some brass rub and buff would have added some high lights but . The clear coat was perfectly none!
That's so cool, the idea is great and the Saber looks awesome as well! I may have to give that a shot some time myself. I love the chain to hang it on a belt, it really suits your whole vibe. May the Force be with you, Master Carly 😄💜
Well done Carly!! I built my own prop lightsaber years ago when I was planning to do a fan film. Never made the short movie, but I did complete my saber. I also used plumbing parts and it can hold a 3/4 inch rod for duelling. I enjoyed watching your process, it brought me back to the good old days! 😊 Excellent job!! 🎉
Love the video from start to finish. Crazy this is your first saber build, Huyang you’ve got competition. Can’t wait for a Clone War android build one day maybe to store the parts
Adam Savage's lightsaber was great, but you built yours with your bare hands and it's beautiful, the only thing that can beat that, is building it with the force. Amazing work. The force is strong with you. Question: which color would you choose for a lightsaber?
I did this exact method back back when Episode III came out for the premiere. Went to Home Depot with only vague ideas and wandered around for an hour until all the pieces showed themselves. The saber is still up on my shelf to this day. Like you said, there's nothing quite like wearing a lightsaber you built yourself.
Great video and excellent build!! If I may make one suggestion, maybe try using steel wool instead of sandpaper to remove the spray paint! Steel wool has the double benefit of being able to mold into those difficult to reach edges much easier, as well as acting as pseudo-polishing method by not leaving as many harsh marks on the finished piece!
This is incredible! On bit of advice, a pipe wrench and strap wrench, along with Teflon tape would made your builds like this easier to assemble. Keep it up! I’m probably going to do the same thing soon thanks to your video.
I tried doing something like this a while back but my local store seemed to be out of a lot of stuff, might have been around COVID, I can't remember exactly when. So I went home with just some plants for my mom. I might give it another shot, yours turned out really well! The only thing I think I would add is a button for the ignition, maybe drill a small hole and add a small red knob or a dial, or even just a dot of red paint in one of the grooves that looks appropriate.
That turned out awesome! When I was younger my dad and I build a custom lightsaber out of plumbing parts and electrical knobs and switches. I don’t have it anymore but it was a simple prequel looking saber with red buttons!
For metal, there is a "glue" it's called JB weld and it's an epoxy that's designed for metal adhesion. It's crazy strong too so whatever you need glued together it will be glued for a very long time😅
JB weld is great for metal on metal bonding! Especially for permanent adhesion. Very toxic though. Definitely wear a respirator. E6000 may work well for just display too! But you’ll want to sand down and surface before applying any adhesive.

Whoa! Carly! That's AWESOME! It looks like a real lightsaber a Jedi would actually use! It's SOOOO SICK! Go save the galaxy, young Jedi! 😊
Really cool result. Imagine how cool the blade would look when you see it through that little window at the top of the emitter.
Great job! Try using a Graflex flash synchroniser and building off that, as its a great platform to build your own variation of a skywalker saber ⚡️🤠
Hey, so this saber is rad af. It was super cool...then you did the weathering effect on it and set it off. Looks INCREDIBLE!!
Awesome video! Fascinating watching you go through this process step-by-step!
Prime example of "trust the process"🔥🔥🔥
Well done Carly!! I built my own prop lightsaber years ago when I was planning to do a fan film. Never made the short movie, but I did complete my saber. I also used plumbing parts and it can hold a 3/4 inch rod for duelling. I enjoyed watching your process, it brought me back to the good old days! 😊
Excellent job!! 🎉
This was an awesome idea. I feel like a Padawan learning how to build my own lightsaber.
I loved this so much. I wish I knew people in real life who love star wars as much as I do like you are.
Love the video from start to finish. Crazy this is your first saber build, Huyang you’ve got competition. Can’t wait for a Clone War android build one day maybe to store the parts
Yess please do more creative videos. They are super fun to watch and experiencing the process with you is very inspiring! Keep up the great work!!
Adam Savage's lightsaber was great, but you built yours with your bare hands and it's beautiful, the only thing that can beat that, is building it with the force. Amazing work. The force is strong with you.
Question: which color would you choose for a lightsaber?
I had this idea a couple months ago and will certainly be putting electronics in it 😁
Lightsaber AND cat, this is truly a great video ^^
And a awesome looking saber to, I need to make a new saber soon i think.
Congratulations, you've taken your first step into a larger world.
This was dope! Also….”Maul” behind the ear 🔥😏
I feel like kit bashing is quite literally one of the most quintessential Star Wars things you can do 👏🏻
Very cool result! Love the chain too! 👏👍
You KILLED this!!! Nice job!
Omg. Arcade machine and kitty!! I know they’re not the focus of the video, but I love them!
It's so PRETTY! This was a good way to start the weekend. Literally just woke up, saw this video and went yay! Saber build! 😊
Saber looks awesome honestly, very cool. Love the addition of a chain to a lightsaber too 👍🏻
