THANK YOU for being a wonderful advocate and bring awareness to the deaf community. Having a deaf son and seeing him experience these same issues you talk about, shows how common they can be. My biggest pet peeve, is when I have to tell people he is not ignoring them, that he is deaf, and then getting the "I'm so sorry"...sorry about what?? My son is perfect in my eyes and his deafness just adds to his uniqueness. Being deaf does not mean you are broken! Will continue to look forward to more videos from you!

While working at Walmart people would get mad at me all the time for "ignoring" them as they talked to my back. The kicker. ...I had HUGE signs saying I was deaf....but they never bothered to read them and complained about me to management!

Maybe they were saying sorry to you for not realizing that he was deaf, and not sorry that he Is deaf?

bruh when someone tells me they're deaf and I say i'm sorry I'm saying it because I didn't notice not because I think they're 'broken'

Hi Justin! I am a CODA and it always amazes people when I tell that that I sign. The response is always the same: I wish I could sign so I can communicate with deaf people. My response is always the same: learn to sign that is the best but a pencil and paper works just as well in the mean time. Happy New Year!

I understand and I dont know why hearing people have to make it so difficult.... and frustrating for us ... recent problem I had at the store I told the person I couldn't hear and they continued to talk ..... and could tell they were yelling but no clue what was said ... could of been telling me the build was on fire and I got nothing

Thank you for bringing awareness about this. People need to understand that communication with us deaf and HOH doesn’t have to be hard. It can be so simple! I’m a huge fan of yours and I’m so excited for more to come! 🥰🥰🤟🏼🤟🏼

It seems weird to me that awareness needs to be made. I feel like it should be common sense that if you need to communicate with someone who can't hear to write it down or type it out.
I can't believe there are so many people on this planet with no common sense, either that or they are just jerks.

Happy new year! I experienced meeting a Deaf person for the first time in June and I was so excited because I wanted to learn what I could do to be a better human and advocate for the community as a hearing person. I’ve always been interested in learning ASL but never had a chance or opportunity. He and I met at a gym and we communicated via my notepad app on my phone and it was awesome. He taught me some basic signs and he said he appreciated me trying to sign the alphabet and spell things to him and for being willing to type back and forth with him. It blew my mind to learn there are people that are not willing to write or type to communicate. Like why??? It’s easy and helpful and inclusive to everyone! I had no idea how many obstacles the Deaf community faces daily until he and I spoke in depth and he provided some resources for me to look into to learn more. I am grateful for your IG page and this UA-cam channel so I can continue to learn!

Man, i love interacting with deaf people. Before the pandemic, there was a 6 foot tall guy that would come through my store for instacart orders that he was running, and I was able to understand when he was getting frustrated and he'd point to things i should do and shouldn't do when bagging/scanning while also pointing to himself sometimes to help me understand. He pointed to his ears the first time i met him so to me, i felt like he was either saying he was deaf or had hearing problems. He'd sometimes react to loud noises or vibrations but he was always nice. After interacting with him for so long, I was able to figure out how to sign "Thank you", but unfortunately not the "you're welcome" part.

It is really disappointing when I hear stories about this, I took the time to learn to sign because we had the most cutest deaf couple ever come into our gas station. I really wanted to talk with them and when I learnt my first sign asking how they were they were over the moon and that made me so happy. They opened a whole new world to me. Thank you for sharing your experience and I am so sorry that has happened to you.

Can you make video and explains about adding captioning is not that hard to do. Is that true? Because I had some argument with several hearing people think it’s time consuming and all. I feel it’s lazy for them to do and not put effort to add captioning. They kept saying it’s expensive to hire them. I said do it yourself. You’ll draw more audience this way. I’m curious your thoughts and inputs on this.

On my TikToks i hand type out my closed captions ... It doesn't take me very long - a 1 min video might take me another 2 or 3 min to cc . I do wish Android's offered an auto cc feature like IPhones do but it's still not incredibly hard even adding them manually . i don't make UA-cam videos but if i did it wouldn't bother me to manually add closed caption them either .

    • @Mermaid404

For UA-cam it is easy it says CCon top of the video push it turns white and there is the caption.

Omg. My friend just shared your burrito video on Facebook and a came straight to your channel, and this video.
You are the first person I have seen who is talking about these struggles. I only had a few encounters with deaf people during the mask days. My response was to step back and remove my mask. Never had to write and read but I would have if it was needed.
I have now binge watched all your videos. Your content is fantastic. The whole world needs to experience your message. You are funny and your stories teach valuable lessons. I can’t wait to see more.

Had a similar type of incident a few years back. My wife tried calling to make an appointment for an oil change. The car place repeatedly refused to accept a phone call through the relay system. I was away at training during that time. When she told me what was happening, I called them up (had enough hearing at that point that I could still hear on the phone) and explained what the relay system was, and that they were denying service to a Deaf person. They kept trying to get ME to make the appointment. I refused, and told them that she would call one more time, please do it right this time. To their credit, they did, and apologized to her when she came in with the car.

I'm hard-of-hearing, and I do read lip. During the COVID-19, because people have to wear mask I have a hard time to read lips. Thankfully I have my parents to interpret what other people saying. Not everyone is willing to do handwriting note, cause they think it's dumb or waste of their time.

I wear a button when I go to stores that says "Hard of hearing, please keep mask on and speak up." Sometimes it helps, sometimes people still pull down their mask. I rarely go out anymore.. its just too difficult. Isolation and depression is tough. Thank you for sharing your experience. Even people who never realized they had a hearing issue before, now realize they do with lips covered.

Yep! Been there and done that! I always type in Notes on my iPhone ahead of time when I need to communicate with someone at the store, UPS, etc.... my first line says "Howdy, I'm Deaf....." Most are willing to sign. Others expect me to lipread which frustrates me.... but I feel ya! By the way, how did you add your CC to your video? Keep up the amazing work you do!

What you've experienced is very similar to what I've had to deal with almost everyday working in customer service. I don't understand why people get so upset or make it so difficult to do basic communication. I understand if there's a language barrier, but why go out of your way to make it impossible? I've met some very kind and understanding people, some even try to learn basic signs like "thank you" and ASL abc's. Others make you feel ashamed and angry that just because you can't hear means they exclude you. I'm sorry you've had your fair share of just rude people. I hope more people can learn to treat others better.

YES! My fiancée is deaf and he reads lips. The pandemic was extremely difficult for him to communicate and even lost a couple jobs because people did not want to take the time to communicate. He has a cochlear implant and the processor broke and only knows a bit of Sign. It was a mixed bag of people that would be willing to take the time to communicate. But there are some EXTREMELY rude and down right prejudice people out there that just flat out refused to meet him halfway, including some of his coworkers and upper management. It has caused him anxiety his whole life to deal with the public and way people "pull fast-ones" on him "because he is deaf." You just don't see it until you take a walk in another person's shoes.

FYI: Hearing people also have a third option to use a tool. If they really cannot write at all for some reason, they can use their phone to use the dictation. From voice to text. Even there is an app that can translate from a foreign language to English as well. They just need to be educated / trained properly. Today is 2021. We aren't in 1900s. :-P

People also need to know that the Deaf use facial expressions and SHOW their feelings. I can't tell you the amount of times People say I look angry when I say no or overreact to things.. but I am in and out of the Deaf and hearing community's I have learned from YEARS OF signing to show my feeling and expressions. Or I get criticism for being to blunt. Another Deaf community thing as we are very descriptive.
