Motorhead and the Ramones are soooooooo iconic that they are the roots of thrash. The ORIGINALS. All punk bands OWE the Ramones, a huge debt of gratitude. They started the modern punk movement. Not the Pistols. Sorry London YOU didn't invent punk rock or the movement. It started in the bowls of New York city. Motorhead did invent thrash or gave birth to it. Either way both bands got it right the first time. God Bless them both. R.I.P.

Amazing video. You are a great speaker and a smart dude. As far as the Ramones go, I will confidently say that next to the Beatles, they are the most influential band in rock history. No exaggeration. Next to the Beatles (and maybe even more so), they are responsible for more youngsters picking up musical instruments. They proved that you didn't need to be a virtuoso in order to play in a band. They showed everyone that it was all about the songs. In my opinion, the two most important pieces of the Ramones puzzle were the songs and Johnny Ramone's guitar style. For nearly 50 years, countless players have been trying to recreate his style and sound, yet his playing is still easily identifiable. Based on what he did, you'd think that it would be easy to recreate. No, it isn't. The dude was a machine. Even more than the crazy level of endurance and great tone he presented was his absolutely perfect timing and consistency. The dude must have had an eternally running, internal metronome in his head. Every downstroke was perfectly in time. Like a lot of people like to refer to him, his consistency was truly like that of a machine gun. I could go on and on about how good that dude was. A lot of ppl say, 'well he didn't play many leads'. Well, he didn't have to. He didn't want to. He served the song. Just think about this....a ton of super crazy good, virtuoso level players declare Johnny as one of their biggest influences. .These guys regard him as a crazy good player, so he is! If Paul Gilbert says that Johnny was 'that' good, he was THAT good.
In closing, just because they are one of my favorite bands, it doesn't mean that I think they are the best band of all time. I don't think you can really call a band, 'the best band of all time'. It is too subjective and there are too many variables. But as far as being influential, I'd say that they are the most influential bands of all time. The inspired and showed more people than any other band of what was possible. It just sucks that they didn't get to fully see the impact they made on musicians around the world with their music.

I will never understand why people complain about an artist's work being consistent. I totally understand if the work is genuinely lazy or uninspired, but if it's just a big block of music that sounds similar, with plenty of effort and merit in every song, then that's one of the best things ever to me. Especially when it's, as you pointed out, a big block that was all produced at roughly the same time. The ability to consistently create that much awesome music with such a distinct sound in such a short span of time is nothing short of admirable.
Pfffffffhahahahahahaha, "Walking STD", oh man, those sleazy musician jokes never get tired. My personal favorite that I've ever seen is "Human Petri Dish." Runner up is "Soggy Cotton Swab".

Based on everything I have read (and the sound of the album), the Phil Spector album (End of Century), was essentially a Joey Ramone solo album. Spector loved Joey. He had little interest in the band. He just wanted to work with Joey. Other than Joey, the band members bailed one by one on that project and it was mostly recorded by session musicians (which is obvious..just listen to it).
Btw, this video is absolutely amazing. I salute you for taking the time and putting in the effort to craft such an amazing video. This is a fantastic tribute to one of the greatest bands of all time. They (and especially Johnny) are responsible for more young people picking up instruments and starting bands. They proved that as long as the good quality songs are there, you don't have to be virtuosos in order to be a good band. One of, if not the most influential bands (second only to the Beatles) of all time, imo.

One thing I miss about LP’s is that moment you open it for the first time and feel that joy when you see the lyrics or some cool artwork or crazy manifesto as you drop the needle onto the vinyl for the very first time. I got to see the Ramones live in 1987 at fender’s ballroom, a couple feet from the stage, I’ll never forget hearing those rapid-fire drumsticks and how Joey grabbed the mic and took that iconic stance at the edge of the stage. My ears rang for an entire day, but it was worth it. When I was in college only a few years later, my heart broke when I got the news that Joey was dead. They truly changed my world, and that of countless bands who came after, who credited them as inspiration for their own music.
Great video and a nice start to my day...thanks!

I completely agree with your point about Judas Priest's twin guitar attack being integral to heavy metal but I'd say the way Iron Maiden approached drums, both playing and recording, was equally important. They were the ones who discovered the odd fact that mixing your drums very loud also makes the guitars sound louder. Very important element of heavy metal production. Black Sabbath albums are, from a mixing/recording standpoint, rock albums from the ground up.

I feel like a lot of heavy metal drummers would agree, but we’re never asked, that the drumming on a Love Supreme by Coltrane was MaSiVeLy influential… maybe subconsciously so ( skip to Pt IV for Loud Drums, but also spoil one of the few concept albums that transcends the aforementioned’s highest expectations, where Meditation, Spirituality, perhaps Religiosity, and street smart Urban Rancour gelled and obsolesced in one 32 minute listen.
Could be just me taking shots in the dark (only shot for shot parallel is the drumming on Mastodon’s Leviathan, and even that is Unsaid in relation)

I'm glad you touched on the Dee Dee King releases. I bought the "Standing In the Spotlight" album years ago, and holy fuck it's like an acid trip to think how one of the best punk bassists could make it. A critic of the album said it the best, it's a kitsch collectors item mainly because it's one of the worst albums ever made. I recommend listening to it just out of morbid curiosity. Especially considering it's got an early Dee Dee version of an Adios Amigos song, "The Crusher".

End of the Century is a beautifully crafted pop album. That's where the Ramones always hit their perfect stride in my opinion, that joining of the almost kitsch like pop sensibilities in between their blistering punk outputs. Had to put any one album ahead of another for what amounted to a fucking killer career; even looking at the live footage of them playing "Warthog" later on and contrasting that with "Danny Says" off End of the Century is amazing considering the eclectic nature the band was able to operate within. Out of every band out there minus maybe The Stooges, this is the one I have the most admiration for in terms of sheer creativity and accomplishment.

I love how their records are really fast, and then their live show is impossibly fucking faster, and MORESO as they get older!!! I would say they are one of the most impressive bands of all time.
I'd recommend everyone watch their version of Blitzkrieg Bop from their very last show. It's almost triple the album speed!

Like many great punk bands, their live performances were often better and more energetic than the studio recordings. Also, Johnny had a self-imposed rule where the Ramones tried not to have a show lasting longer than an hour because he deliberately wanted to leave the fans wanting more. I guess he figured if the show went on too long, the fans would start to get bored and would not leave the show with such a great impression of the band. Leaving the fans craving for more was a great way to get them to come back the next time the Rates came to town. Johnny used to time the shows and try to beat his previous record for finishing a show, lol.

Really great video dude. And also, good take on Stern. I remember hearing those interviews and felt bad for those guys. But seriously, this is an awesome punk doc.

37:57 - "Animal Boy" is currently my favorite RAMONES album! Aside from the over produced trax 'Bonzo Goes To Bitburg', 'Crummy Stuff' and 'Something to Believe In' (all of which I dig), it's their punkest album IMO!!! 'Love Kills', Freak Of Nature', 'Mental Hell', 'Apeman Hop', 'Hair Of The Dog' 'Somebody Put Something In My Drink' and the title track are undeniably some of the punkiest trax (punkiest prolly being 'Eat That Rat') they've ever made with an offbeat production quality to boot! The slow track 'She Belongs To Me' ain't bad either, style's just a bit dated maybe. Overall, I truly dig this record!! Don't rule this one out!
