GTA IV has the best theme out of any GTA game IMO. I just love how much it sounds like classical music in comparison to all of the other GTA titles. GTA III was also a great GTA title and I love how it had a classical music station. I love the dark atmospheres of GTA III and IV. TLAD was also downright amazing. As much as I love VC and SA, I think their themes were a bit too upbeat for my personal tastes. However, I still appreciate both games as well as TBOGT for having a fair mixture of doom and gloom within criminals as well as a little bit of glamour involved but nothing too crazy. Then came GTA V and all of the dark atmospheres, multicultural themes and realism of the criminal life was essentially lost. The criminal aspect was more or less dropped in favor of something you’d expect more out of a Call of Duty game. And yes, I know TLAD and TBOGT are DLCs to IV. You don’t have to remind me!

I just had the thought that Niko Bellic and Arthur Morgan are pretty similar, at least at the start of their stories. They're both career outlaws with a strong sense of loyalty to family. In fact, their respective families basically form their entire moral compass, and they both rationalize the bad things they do as being for the sake of their family (which is usually true, to their credit). They're both navigating a new world where their criminal ways of life just don't really work anymore but they don't know how to change. They both have serious guilt and regret over the violence they've committed and continue to commit, but they both hide it underneath an angry, thuggish persona and focus on survival. From there their stories get pretty different; Niko never gets betrayed by anyone in his family. Arthur also can have a happier ending, since neither of GTA IV's endings are intended to be very hopeful. Certainly the way they're both presented is dark, grey and gloomy before the credits roll, whereas Arthur can get an ending with the beautiful sunrise, where at least learned the right lesson in the end and helped his real family. Niko lives but someone in his new family always has to die (I know Kate isn't the best-presented character, but I'm arguing that the *intent* is that Niko cares about her like family). A lot of the same writers worked on both games and you can see them exploring a lot of the same themes again. I like that they take a lot of the same ideas but go in very different directions with them in these two games.
Imagine if in VI Jason tells Lucia a story about a score he did back in Dukes in Liberty and hear the low end violin 3:29 play subtly in the background as a hint and tribute to IV like a MCU scene

A lost soul, desperately looking for a way out escapes his home country in search for the land of hopes and dreams. All for his expectations to be crushed, dreams shattered, and have his old life continue to follow him and haunt him after having thought escaped. Niko Bellic, a stoic war veteran hailing from Eastern Europe, sought refuge from his troubled past by leaving his war-torn homeland behind. In search of the elusive American Dream, he arrived in Liberty City, the land of opportunity, with hopes of starting anew. However, fate had other plans. Despite his efforts to escape his old life, the ghosts of his past managed to seep into the fabric of his new existence. As Niko delves into the criminal underbelly of Liberty City, he finds himself entangled in a web of treachery, corruption, and betrayal. Former associates from his homeland resurface, exploiting his vulnerability and forcing him to confront the skeletons he had hoped to leave buried. The personal vendettas and debts that followed him across the ocean threaten to shatter his dreams of a fresh beginning. His journey unfolds against the backdrop of a sprawling metropolis teeming with crime and decadence. Liberty City, a cesspool of moral ambiguity, becomes both his playground and battleground. Niko, with his cold, relentless demeanor, navigates this unforgiving urban landscape, making alliances, engaging in criminal activities, and seeking vengeance while struggling to maintain his own sense of identity and morality. In this harrowing saga, Niko's pursuit of the American Dream becomes intertwined with his quest for personal redemption. The land of the free, once a symbol of hope, transforms into a crucible of violence and despair. With every step he takes, Niko confronts the harsh reality that escaping one's past is never as simple as crossing a border.
