  • Comparison video between the WLToys 1/28 scale K969 Drift Car and the K989 Touring Car. Both cars are great if you're looking to get into the small-scale R/C scene without spending a lot.
    Bodyshells aside, however, their differences are subtle but important if you're considering buying either of these cars. Hopefully, this video helps you decide which is best for you.
    NOTE: This is the very first video I've ever made (using only my old cell phone), and it went WAY longer than I had intended. However, I really do hope you find it useful.

I just couldn't decide which one I liked more or which one was going to be more suitable for what I wanted to do with them... so I got both. As you said, Mini-Zs are awesome, but for the cost I couldn't justify buying two of them. But two of these WLToys cars comes in WAY under the cost of the least expensive Mini-Z.

      For working on these small WLToys cars, I use a relatively inexpensive 7-piece precision screwdriver tool set by Husky (Model 67123H) I picked up at Home Depot, which I think was about $8 USD. This tool set will tackle about 99% of any maintenance/upgrades you'll ever encounter working on these cars so if you pick up something similar you'll be fine. You'll also need a 4mm hex socket in order to remove the small nuts that hold the wheels in place. I have one as part of a larger metric socket set but you don't need an entire set of hex sockets. You can simply pick up a single 1/4" drive 4mm socket and handle and you'll pretty much have everything you'll need to do virtually any work on these cars.
      I hope that helps.

      @RCRacingLegends  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks! Glad you liked the video.
      The answer to your question isn't a simple one, but I'll do my best to give you some sort of direction.
      First of all, if you're looking for an "outdoor" R/C car, I wouldn't suggest either the K969/989 nor would I suggest the A959B. These are great R/C cars, but in my opinion, they're a bit too small to be really useful or even fun outside. For outside use, I wouldn't look at anything smaller than a 1/10 scale vehicle. And in that respect, there's a lot of great options with some being really cheap and others rather expensive. The best thing is there are many different styles in this scale, like buggies, truggies, bashers, on-road touring cars, drift cars, crawlers, trail trucks... you name it. The trouble is this size of the R/C market is so vast I would need a lot more information from you as to what you like, what you're looking for, and how much you're looking to spend, in order to make a suggestion.
      Now, if you're looking for something indoor,, and given that this is your first R/C, I would strongly suggest getting the K989, then spend a bit of money on an extra set of wheels and drift tires. The K969 is really more of a drift-specific car, which is fun but can be frustrating if you've never done it before. Trust me, drifting LOOKS easy on screen, but it's not easy to do. The K989 offers more flexibility as to how it can be used because it has open diffs and nice rubber tires. That way you can spend your time learning to drive an R/C properly and get used to the dynamics. Plus, if you get a second set of wheels and drift tires, you can try drifting to see if you like it, and you can always switch back to the rubber tires for "general" use.
      I hope that helps, or at least gives you some sort of direction.

    Thank you so much for this informative video, extremely informative, I'm a newb but have been looking to get into the drifting and I was going to get the k989 thinking it could drive out of the box because a lot of online shops selling these as if they are drifting out of the box like the k969 but u sound a bit apprehensive about that one, maybe it was just me. either way, I didn't think these little cars needed plastic wheels to drift. I guess I'm just wondering if I should get the touring car and some drift tires and/or parts or just get a drift car. thanks again for the great video!

    • @RCRacingLegends
      @RCRacingLegends  3 роки тому +3

      Thanks, I'm glad you liked the video and found it informative.
      I didn't really mean to sound apprehensive about the K969 - it's a great RC car - but it is more difficult to drive out of the box which is something I really wasn't expecting when I bought both of these. In all honesty they're both great and if you have experience drifting or you know that's exactly what you're looking for then the K969 is a very good choice.
      However, I typically suggest beginners consider the K989 because out of the box it is a bit more versatile. If you want to use it as-is, it's a very good little RC car. It's fast, handles well, the rubber tires have good grip and it can be used on a number of different surfaces both inside and outside. If, you're looking to get into drifting with it, a set of drift tires from DS Racing (you can find them on eBay) and a set of Kyosho 4WD wheels (also easily found on eBay) are inexpensive and will have you drifting in no time. As you progress in your drifting skills and feel you might benefit from locked differentials, you can disassemble the diffs and simply insert a circular piece of paper over the ring gear, then reassemble and you'll have locked diffs virtually for free. If you find you don't like the locked diffs, simply remove the piece of paper, and you're back to open diffs. You can also pack the diffs with really heavy grease to achieve a similar locked effect. And if you desire to go back to a stock driving experience, it's as easy as swapping the wheels and tires for the rubber ones that came with the car.
      Ultimately, you can't go wrong with either car. They're both great. I just think the K989 provides a bit more versatility between the two.
      I hope that helps.

      As for guides on how to lock the diffs, there are a couple of good guides here on UA-cam. I'll leave a link below to a video that shows a number of different ways to accomplish locking the diff on these cars. Personally, I prefer a "non-permanent" method (the easiest for these WLToys cars is simply a piece of paper cut into a circle to fit inside the diff between the ring gear and the spider gears), just in case I decide to return the car to open diffs, but the choice is entirely yours.

    Hey there sir! I just wanna say first that u made a really good vid! I have a question though. Do you have any problems with the suspension? Because mine has a very odd toe in and toe out and it makes it hard to drive straight. Do you think theres any way to fix that?

    • @RCRacingLegends
      @RCRacingLegends  4 роки тому

      Hi and thanks for your compliment. Glad you liked the video.
      Are you running the K969 or K989? I haven't noticed any toe-in or toe-out issues with the K989 but it seems the K969 is inconsistent in maintaining good toe-in. I think with that car though, it's down to the tires - those hard tires go all over the place and the car doesn't track well at all. I received some new rubber tires for that car, so I'll try those to see if I experience the issue.
      But what I would suggest is to remove the wheels and tires, and the shocks and see if the suspension moves free. If it doesn't you can use a bit of lube or grease on the joints - this will help keep the suspension from binding which sometimes effects the toe-in/toe-out. If the suspension seems fine you might want to consider upgrading to adjustable upper arms so you can adjust the toe manually.
      I hope that helps.

    Great video! Thanks so much! I really want to get myself either the K989 or the K969. The only thing putting me off is the Lipo battery. I know it is crazy, but I worry about fire. Granted, I know little to nothing about lipo batteries other than hearing they can create a fire. Any info on this would be epic! Thanks again!

    • @RCRacingLegends
      @RCRacingLegends  3 роки тому +2

      Glad you like the video.
      Honestly, I think the whole LiPo battery fire thing is a tiny bit over hyped. Obviously it's necessary to take the necessary precautions when charging LiPo batteries, but in the grand scheme of things LiPo fires are actually quite rare when you consider the number of LiPo batteries that have been manufactured over the years (and I'm not just talking about the RC hobby). LiPo battery fires start due to thermal runaway from one of two factors: internal degradation or physical damage (puncture). If you don't do anything stupid like try to puncture a LiPo, then physical damage isn't going to be an issue. Internal degradation is caused when a LiPo battery isn't properly maintained over a long period of time (ie. not balance charged, repeatedly drained below 3.2v per cell, and stored at the improper voltage when not in use).
      Now I should mention, since getting both the K969 and K989 I've only used the included USB charger to charge the batteries (which I don't think is a balance charger). I'm assuming the ESC has the proper low voltage cutoff for the included LiPo batteries, but I've never confirmed this. And I often go days if not weeks between running these cars. Basically, I've done all the things you SHOULDN'T do with a LiPo battery since getting these cars, and I haven't experienced any issues at all. Don't get me wrong, I really should be charging them with a proper balance charger while using a fire-proof charging bag or charging box, and then discharging them to a safe storage voltage for periods when I won't be using the cars for a while in order to maintain the batteries properly. And these are things I DEFINITELY do with my larger 1/10 scale sized LiPo battery packs. My point is these small LiPo batteries don't need to be babied the way you might think.
      If you're holding back on buying one (or both) of these cars because of your inexperience with LiPo batteries, don't let that be the case. Go ahead and buy one! Trust me, there's nothing to fear and you won't regret it at all. If it makes you feel better, get yourself an inexpensive fire proof charging bag at the same time, and you'll be more than covered. Eventually, if this is a hobby want to continue to pursuit, I would suggest getting a better quality balance charger to help maintain and preserve these LiPo batteries. But my guess is that this will be a natural progression anyway since you'll be looking to upgrade to newer and better cars with larger capacity (and more expensive) batteries.
      I hope that helps alleviate your fears.

      It's actually normal for the front diff to be locked on AWD drift cars. The one-way diff you ordered will be no different, except it will free wheel on reverse but be locked when going forward. Generally speaking that's what's preferred for drifting an AWD car.

      Not all 1/10 scale RCs have locked front diffs. Only true drift RC cars typically have locked (or one-way) front diffs.
      As for the constant under steer you're experiencing with the K969, yes it's the locked front diff that causes that (along with the slick plastic tires).

      I have no specific experience adding a stand-alone gyro for one of these K969 or K989 RC cars, so I can't definitively say whether one can be added. However, there are several 1/24 1/28 gyros available on the market that may work. Check out sites like Banggood or Aliexpress for some inexpensive options from Dasmikro or AGFRC.
      The issue I see here is these cars use a 2-in-1 transmitter/ESC combo which may or may not allow the use of a gyro. This is why most folks who want to drift these little cars typically swap out the stock electronics with better aftermarket items.

    I just got a 284131 and i have a k969 and 284161 on the way too, for all three i paid $115 with a extra two batteries. I noticed that on the 284131the differential pinion gears are metal and it has screws in the lower ball joints to keep the from popping out. Hopefully they updated the k989 too, the 284161 definitely has the upgrades as well as a heatsink for the motor.

    If you change the tires on the k989 to drift tires, will it be as good as a stock k969 at drifting or do i need to do other mods on it?

    • @RCRacingLegends
      @RCRacingLegends  3 роки тому +1

      Well, that sort of depends on what you consider to be "good". The K969 has locked differentials, making it very easy to get into a drift, but that also makes it a bit more difficult to control especially if you're inexperienced at RC drifting. If you put drift tires on the K989, it would have about the same amount of grip as the stock K969 tires, but with the open differentials, it may be a bit easier to control for a novice. That doesn't mean it's not as "good" as the K969, it's just different. A well-experienced RC drift driver would say the locked diffs of the K969 are better for drifting. But I'm not at that level so I can't say whether one is better than the other.
      Personally, I think if you got the K989 and put a set of DS Racing LF-4 or LF-5 tires, you'd have a fine drift car that you can learn on. Once you get a bit more experience at RC drifting and you get better at it, you'll probably want to look at mods like CS gearing, one-way front differential, locked rear differential, and upgrades to the electronics to provide better control.
      I hope that helps.

    "thanks for tuning in" lol dont say that. really it is thank YOU for making this video. congrats on a new sub and a like and one small question, do the bodies fit on the other car (like does the k969 body fit on the k989 chassis vice versa) and if so l want the k969 (porsche) and want the ford body so is the a adaptor or something to fit the body on the back since on the k989 the back of the body is higher. thanks

      @RCRacingLegends  3 роки тому

      Glad you liked the video and found it useful. And thanks for the sub.
      As for the bodies, yes the two bodies are interchangeable, however, the body mounting posts are different between the two cars. The front mounting posts are the same, however, the rear mounting posts are different to accommodate the difference in height. So if you wanted to swap bodies between the two cars, you'd need to unbolt and install the appropriate rear body posts. I'm sure a suitable adaptor could be designed and made to work in the rear using the lower K969 body posts, but I've never seen an existing one.
      I hope that answers your question.

    and i also wanted to ask if the speed is the same in both models.
    that said a very nice and well made video

    • @RCRacingLegends
      @RCRacingLegends  3 роки тому

      If you're looking to drift then the K969 is certainly a good choice. However, if you're also looking for speed, then you're going to be disappointed. Not because the K969 isn't capable of being fast, but because drift cars themselves aren't fast. Take a look at any R/C drifting and it's not fast at all. In fact, it's typically quite slow (especially compared to true high-speed R/C racing). This is because the tires are hard plastic, setup to slip and slide around; they have extremely low grip so getting any sort of speed with them is difficult. Now, you can get speed out of the K969 but you'll need to change to a rubber tire (like what you find on the K989), but when you do that it won't drift very well as there will be a lot of grip to overcome.
      As for the speed between the two models, technically yes they are the same since they have the same gears, the same motors, the same battery, and the diameter of the tires are (pretty much) the same. The big difference is the amount of grip from the stock tires. The K969 has extremely low grip since the drift tires are hard plastic, so putting the power down isn't easy. Good for drifting, but bad if you want to go really fast in a controlled manner. The opposite is true for the K989, with it's rubber tires it's extremely quick for such a small car, but has too much grip to be a good drift car.
      I hope that helped and didn't confuse you too much.

    • @fishjr.2405
      @fishjr.2405 3 роки тому

      I realised that if I was looking for more speed and therefore more grip, a tyre such as the

    • @RCRacingLegends
      @RCRacingLegends  3 роки тому +1

      @@fishjr.2405 Exactly!
      R/C is a balancing act between grip and speed. Drift tires have very little grip so drift cars aren't going to be very fast (and when they DO get going fast, there's very little control because the tires have no grip). The same goes for rubber tires. With loads of grip, it makes it near impossible to drift. That's why when someone says, "I want a car that can drift but is also fast", it's difficult to make a suggestion because these two characteristics are on either end of the spectrum as to what's possible. The only real solution is to buy two sets of wheels and tires: one for drifting and one for high-speed running. Which you can do wheither you decide to buy the K969 or the K989.

      If you mean lock the differential(s) of the K989, yes you can. I think the easiest way to do so is to dismantle the diff itself, cut a circular piece of paper to fit where the pinion gears are located, cover the pinion gears using that piece of paper (no need for glue), then bolt the diff back together and it should be pretty much locked.
      I hope that made sense. If not, I believe Beaver's Hobby Channel did a video on this, which I'm sure will do a far better job of explaining it.
      Another option is to dismantle the diffs and simply load them up with really heavy grease. It won't lock them completely, but it'll be pretty close.

    Hello, very educational video. I want to get into drift rc. Do you think it will be a great ideal to get K989 with drift tires on to learn how to drift for bigger rc like 1/10 scale? Instead of just getting the K969...

    • @RCRacingLegends
      @RCRacingLegends  3 роки тому

      Thanks, glad you liked the video.
      This is a great question and one I've sort of struggled with myself a bit. Getting a K989 with a set of drift wheels and tires will probably prove to be the least expensive option to learn how to drift. That's not to say the K969 isn't a good drift car out of the box, but I think the open differentials of the K989 make it a bit easier to deal with as you learn. Plus the stock drift tires that come with the K969 aren't great so you'll more than likely be looking to replace those with better ones anyway.
      However, I do have to stress you will need a fair bit of room - even though these cars are small - to learn how to drift properly. Don't be fooled by videos you've seen here on UA-cam where folks show these cars drifting on a coffee table or what looks like a tiny space. These folks generally have experience drifting and have mastered the art of R/C car control. They make it look easy, but it's not especially if you're just starting out. One day when you get good, you'll be able to mimic what you see here on UA-cam, but in the beginning you're going to need a fair bit of room. And I should also mention, because these cars are small, it's highly advisable that you use them indoors instead of outdoors.
      1/10 scale RC is awesome and I'd think that would be your ultimate goal to move into. The trouble is it can get really expensive. $1,500 for a properly sorted RC drift car isn't unheard of. However, there are deals out there if you're willing to look and you're careful where you spend your money. The trouble with 1/10 scale RC is that they require even more room to learn how to drift properly. But they do have the advantage that they can be used outside as well as indoors.
      I hope that helps.

    • @RCRacingLegends
      @RCRacingLegends  3 роки тому

      You should be able to fit other WLToys 1/28 scale bodies to these cars, however the body posts may need to be lengthened or shortened in order to make them work. I believe you can find WLToys bodies on banggood.com
      However, if you're looking to mount a Mini-Z body, then you'll need to make a few modifications as Mini-Z bodies don't use body posts to mount to their respective chassis; these WLToys were never designed to take a Mini-Z body but it can be done. I should also mention, only a few Mini-Z bodies will clear the front suspension so you'll be limited in your selection.
      Beaver's Hobby channel here on UA-cam has made a great video showing the process of mounting a Mini-Z body to one of these WLToys chassis. He talks about suspension clearances, and what's needed to be modified in order to make it work. I strongly suggest checking it out if you haven't already.
      Now, if you're feeling really adventurous, you could fit a 1/25 scale static model body (like Tamiya, Revel/Monogram, Hasagawa, etc...) onto one of these cars. You'd have to do a bit of research to find a vehicle whose wheelbase will fit the WLToys car (remember, the WLToys car wheelbase comes stock at 98mm but can be elongated to 102mm so you do have some flexibility) but it's potentially an option if you're willing to get some styrene and make custom mounts; use rare earth magnets to hold the body in place so you don't have to drill holes.
      I hope that helps.

    • @RCRacingLegends
      @RCRacingLegends  3 роки тому

      The turning angle between the K969 and K989 is the same, the only difference is the tires which may account for any difference. You can modify the turning angle (on either car) a bit by simply moving the steering arm to the second hole on the steering horn (I have a video here on the channel showing how to do that). It's a simple and free mod and makes a big difference.
      As for the diffs, if you go with a replacement WLToys unit, it's a simple plug-n-play operation. I would suggest dismantling the new diffs, cleaning and greasing then up well before installing as part quality can sometimes be a bit sketchy. But all in all they're a cheap upgrade. I believe you can also use the Sinohobby diffs as well without any modifications, just plug-n-play. If you go for a Kyosho Mini-Z diff, you'll need to use longer swing (drive) shafts because the drive cups of the mini-z diffs aren't as long as the ones used on the WLToys diffs. Unfortunately I don't think the longer swing shafts are available anymore (they were made and sold by Atomic RC at one point).

    • @RCRacingLegends
      @RCRacingLegends  3 роки тому

      I'll answer your tyre question first. As of right now, I've never tried to remove the hard plastic tires off the stock wheels that came with the K969, but I don't think it's a very easy operation. My strong advice would be to get another set of wheels to use with the grippy tyres you've purchased. I personally have this set from banggood.com and I can definitely recommend them:
      www.banggood.com/4PCS-Wltoys-Metal-Hub-RC-Car-Wheel-128-For-K989-And-IW04M-RC-Car-p-1358224.html?cur_warehouse=CN&ID=228&rmmds=search
      There are a number of different wheels available online that will fit these WLToys including 4WD Mini-Z wheels (I believe you'll want 0 offset versions) so you have a lot of options. By using a separate set of wheels with the grippy tires, it'll give you the opportunity to swap between the rubber and hard drift tires far quicker than if you tried to remove the hard drift tires from the wheels each time. Drift tires typically need to be heated up (either using a hair dryer or boiling water) to get them to expand enough to fit over the wheel, so constant removal and reinstallation is not easy or recommended.
      As for your question regarding fitting ball diffs to the front, I would strongly suggest that you first run the cars as they come before swapping differentials. You may find that they're just fine for the type of racing you and your friends will be doing without making any changes. However, if you're finding that the cars are difficult to control or have far too much oversteer, then you should consider swapping the rear diffs in each car with ball diffs in order to improve control. Conversely, if you're finding the cars are understeering too much, swapping in ball diffs for the front axles may help solve that problem. But I wouldn't suggest blindly spending the money on new ball diffs for each vehicle without driving and learning the cars as they come out of the box first.

      This is a very good question.
      The K989 has knobby rubber tires, which work well on almost any surface except for maybe very shaggy carpet. They have decent grip and I've found they don't slide very easy at all; I've found it very difficult to drift the K989 with the stock rubber tires.
      The K969, on the other hand, has hard plastic tires with no tread on them at all. The K969 has very low traction which is why it can drift very easily. But this makes the K969 a smooth surface vehicle ONLY. Hardwood, tile, smooth concrete, and extremely low-pile carpet floors are all fine for the K969, but running outside on pavement is probably not going to work.
      Ultimately, if you want a versatile car that can tackle a more varied terrain, get the K989. And if you buy a separate set of drift wheels and tires you can enjoy drifting on smooth surfaces as well.

      If you're only interested in drifting, then out of the box the better car is the K969. With it's locked diffs and smooth drift tires, this car is easy to get to drift with virtually no effort at all.
      In saying that, if you're new to drifting, then these characteristics can make driving the car a tiny bit frustrating at first. It's nothing that would make me say "don't buy it", but instead to say you'll need to take your time and get used to driving a drift car.
      But if you're used to driving drift R/C cars, and that's exactly what you're looking for, then the K969 is definitely the way to go.

      You could also purchase a set of wheels and rubber tires when you purchase a K969 as well. That way, if you want to switch between the two types of tires as you learn it's an inexpensive way to avoid any frustration you may encounter with the drift tires alone.

      Personally I don't think you'll see a US-based seller because these cars are not popular in small scale competitive racing. However, with that said, there are a number of parts that you can use from Mini-Z, Atomik, GL Racing, and several other small-scale RC cars. Things 4WD Mini-Z wheels and tires are usable with these WLtoys cars, as well as differentials and bearings. Even Mini-Z bodies can be fitted to these WLToys cars.

      @@akirahinata9085 Rubber tires are not typically used for drifting unless you can find some really hard rubber tires and even then I doubt you'll find anything at this scale (maybe for 1/10 drifter cars). The only time rubber tires are can drift at this scale is if you're driving the car on a really dusty floor.
      With that said though, you can get better plastic drift tires than the ones that come stock with the K969. DS Racing makes some nice ones in both narrow and wide and they come in varying degrees of traction too. Kyosho also makes drift tires for their Mini-Zs which can be used on the WToys cars as long as you mount them on 4WD Mini-Z wheels.

    • @RCRacingLegends
      @RCRacingLegends  3 роки тому +1

      @@akirahinata9085 Before spending any money on alloy parts or brushless motor upgrade or anything like that, the three things I'd recommend you do are as follows:
      1. Perform the steering modification, moving the steering arm to the second hole on the servo horn. I have a video on the channel here showing how to do it. It makes a noticeable difference.
      2. Remove the spring spacers from each shock. These are small plastic C-shaped pieces located above each spring. These are easy to remove and will soften the suspension a bit allowing better weight transfer when initiating a drift or changing direction.
      3. Get a set of Kyosho 4WD Mini-Z wheels (3.5mm offset) and a set of DS Racing Mini LF-1 or Mini LF-4 (or even Mini LF-5) drift tires. You can find both on eBay. These are far better than the stock wheels and tires that come with the K969.
      Two of the three upgrades above are free and the third won't cost much at all. But doing these will help set up the car so you can learn how to drift. Drifting is a real skill and not one that will come easy. It will take time and practice, and no amount of upgrades/hop-ups/alloy bits/etc... is going to make the car drift better or easier, nor will it make you a better drift driver. It's all about practice.
      Hope that helps.
