I've been listening to Chon for about 2 years. Glad you took the suggestion and a shot at this one (think I mentioned it a few months back)! Excited to see the video in the next few days. Polyphia actually has a collab with the two guitarists from Chon, Mario Camarena and Erick Hansel, on the song Yas. Clay has a pretty cool style video production side of that video for the drums.
Chon is literally the first math rock band i've known, back in 2014 i think, they were the best of the genre (not saying they're bad now, but in terms of innovation, Polyphia has grown much more)
Some years, i got introduced to them by polyphia because they have one collab which is called "yas"´. if you dont react to it at least listen to the song cos it is amazing
I hope you check out the band Japanese band Toe, easily one of my favorite drummers or TTNG if your gonna stay in the Math Rock genre. Both have some fantastic performances on UA-cam.
opened for these guys about 3-4 years ago and can confirm they were high as a kite (after having a smash brothers tournament before) and STILL didn't miss a NOTE. Highly recommend their track 'Story' for the next reaction
I found Chon about a year ago through their song "Bubble" which is fantastic. If you haven't heard his work before I highly recommend checking out Angel Vivaldi. his Away With Words album is incredible as well his Universal Language album. All instrumental works that inspired me to buy my first guitar some years ago. Ironically I'll never be able to play any of his masterpieces.
Best thing about Chon is they're all into Death Metal. The guitarist Eric sometimes wears a Necrophagist T-shirt. They also done the guitar parts for Alex Rudingers cover of Necrophagist - Stabwound. The bass player here left, but the drummer and guitarist (Mario)'s brother Esiah has joined making it 3 bros and Eric. Excellent musicians! EDIT: They also gave away the guitar they painted in the video.
Oh hey, great comment! Never knew that about the painted guitar - very neat. I recommended an Alex Rudinger video to Tony a couple weeks back (his Xenochrist vid). Guy's an absolute technician on the kit. And Necrophagist are phenomenal and imo changed the entire course of tech death.
Hella excited you’re checking out Chon. They definitely became my favorite band immediately when I first heard their stuff. Some suggestions I have are Story, Continue?, Ghost, Perfect Pillow, No Signal, and Thanks. I know it’s a lot of suggestions, but that doesn’t even scratch the surface of all their amazing songs. I would recommend more, but these are my personal favorites along with Splash.
Jyocho,Chon,TTNG,delta sleeps, elephant gym,TOE,Tiny Moving Parts,Covet,Tricot are some of the most essential math rock bands you need to listen. They are choppy, progressive, jazzy and ambient using open tunings on guitar.
Love CHON! They're who got me really into the mathier, jazzier, more progressive side of instrumental metal-influenced music, like Plini, AaL, Scale the Summit, and Covet and shit like that. Super tight outfit. Their latest LP is fantastic. Not a single track worth skipping over. Keep em coming dude! Love these reactions.
Best Instrumental Band Recs I got are: - Alpha Male Tea Party - Town Portal - Granite Hands - Waxamilion - Victoria - Trailkill - Deformica - Kaguu - Russian Circles - Pelican - Mestis In no particular order, styles range widely
you should do pitch dark! my absolute favourite tune by these guys, some cool rhythmic stuff happening in the main idea that makes you feel a modulation but drops you back in on the downbeat
when i found out about them around 2015 its all i would listen to. I saw them live in 2016 and Polyphia was one of the bands that opened for them. At the time i only knew one Polyphia song so i didnt really get to enjoy them as much as if i were to see them today.
Toe has an amazing drummer that rivals Clay in terms of innovation. I'd check out their first album (メトロノーム [metronome] is absolutely mental drumming but 孤独の発明 [Kodoku no hatsumei] is probably their most well-known track album). Goodbye (グッドバイ) or long tomorrow are the most craziest and most intricate songs though so don't sleep on those (by far and away my favorite especially cuz the Goodbye music video really captures the wild nature of their drummer)
Honestly, that's just the norm for Japanese Jazz/Math Rock drummers. Special OTHERS, a picture of her, Mouse on the Keys, Jizue, etc. If Toe is all you know you should look into other Japanese bands, as toe is a nice introduction, but there's many that rival and surpass both of them.
Matt Garska has a feature on this album, and you can tell their drummer learned a lot from him. He's the youngest member of the band, pretty sure he was 13 when they started and like 20-21 for this album. He's a young prodigy for sure
Brian Evans recorded the drums on this track and was also the drum teacher for Chon's drummer for a bit. Brian is also the reason Gartska has a feature on the album.
If you liked this then I highly recommend checking out the Meinl Cymbals Live recording of Nathan Camarena (the drummer). He did two songs: "Sleepy Tea" and "Perfect Pillow". The rhythmic modulation these guys pull off is so sick. Especially if you have a drumline background like we do.
"are these conservatory kids that went out and hung out with all sorts of jazz heads" LMFAO thats so funny, but it turns out theyre big big jazz fusion listeners
Personal favorites from Chon are “Perfect Pillow” and “Bubble Dream (audio tree version)” Another cool one is “Waterslide” They’re just a fun but amazing band man 🔥
Hey Tony, check out Matt Halpern from Periphery! He has a very "groovy" approach in his drummings, with enough ghost notes to make Maryland haunted. He has a drum playthrough of Satellite by the band on UA-cam.
I would absolutely love to see you react to Emerald Joy by Outrun the Sunlight. They're not well known at all and probably won't bring a ton of views to be honest, but they are so talented, and I think you'd really enjoy the song. There are so many amazing bands that are relatively undiscovered. Outrun the Sunlight, And So I Watch You From Afar, Enemies, Waking Aida, Man Is Not a Bird, etc. Would love to see any of them get some of the attention they deserve.
Really looking forward to a Chon reaction. If I might suggest something else... I would love to see your reaction to Between the buried and me - Extremeophile Elite. The whole band is crazy, but Blake's drumming is a treat along with the rest of the band (and string quartet????) ua-cam.com/video/dM8WjgRA6o8/v-deo.html
Tony if you enjoyed chon stuff i believe you would enjoy the band toe they have an excellent drummer. I would suggest the song goodbye or esoteric if you are more interested in the drumming i would recommend live versions of these songs because they are a bit different from the album versions and sound a bit better imo
First off i love your reactions, i would say these are more "analysis" than actual reaction and that's why i like it. Seeing what you like, you should definitely check out Charlie Robbins or The Omnific (or both). Let's say Nostalgia for Charlie Robbins and Ne Plus Ultra for The Omnific. But actually all of their songs are great to react to. Their genre is kinda math rock too, but in a different way which i let you discover.
Love your videos brother. Wanted to suggest a couple bands and songs for you: Cynic, specifically the song Evolutionary Sleeper from the 2008 album Traced in Air. If you wanted to do a song from their 1993 album Focus, I wouldn't be mad either. Intervals, specifically the song 5-HTP. Between the Buried and Me, specifically the song Prequel to the Sequel.
is there any chance you could review some of mickgordons work? or just the DOOM soundtrack, recommended songs really just being BFG division and The Only Thing They Fear Is You
ooooh. please react to tera melos - melody 2. or just any of their music. or anything from emergency & I from The dismemberment plan. but if i gotta give you the most technical math rock i know that would be What burns never returns (the album) from Don Caballero, the first song on that is brainmelting.
As a life-long music lover and officially a Retired Ancient Fart, it burns my ass to hear so any people my age proclaim that, "Music these days SUCKS!" Yeah, I think, POP music has always mostly sucked. But this ain't pop, and THIS DON'T SUCK!!!
@@DrumRollTonyReacts think he was more so just saying people his age generally say new music sucks, and then saying this def doesnt suck. nothing you said directly. great vid man check sleepy tea or waterslide!
Hey man, great video and great reaction! Found you from the jojo videos! I was wondering if you could do the song “melting” by king gizzard and the lizard wizard?
⏩ Video Question: How long have you known about this band?!?! What a gem

Fantastic!. Someone revisiting Chon!. What a surprise. This band is awesome. Great job Tony. Thank you!
I'm looking forward to doing more of them. They are so good
Great reaction - love Chon. I would recommend reacting to one of the Audiotree Live studio session tracks.
Oh man yeah, all the audiotree sessions are awesome.
That was session was my introduction to Chon
Agree! The live performance is really good
I hope you check out the band Japanese band Toe, easily one of my favorite drummers or TTNG if your gonna stay in the Math Rock genre. Both have some fantastic performances on UA-cam.
seconded on TTNG if you are into math rock
Toe is sick, and this town needs guns whole animals album is a masterpiece
Drummer’s background is smoking weed listening to Hella and practicing for 7 hours a day
Pretty normal tbh

AAL's drummer Matt Garstka was a guest drummer on 2 songs on one of Chon's albums! Just a fun fact lol
