Back then it was more about reliability than than size. Labor was easy to find, you just needed a machine that could keep working non stop. Then you just added another machine. My father and grandfather each had a Massey Harris 60 special pull type. A 55 HP tractor could roll with it at 3 mph in 80 bu wheat. Two 8ft heads really kept me and my uncle hopping with the wagons. I don’t remember either of those machines breaking down.

I harvested with the Allis Chamers 60 and 72 All Corp for several years combined small grass seed, still have my 72 in storage

My grandfather had a all crop 60 great machine
I ran the case combine back in 1963 for my uncle. It was very dirty job but great experience.
