Some stuff wasn't quite right. According to Rick, it wasn't the Unity ring but another ring he punched him with (you can see it in the video even, the ring Rick points to does not say Unity). But yeah, seems mostly accurate.
If Chappelle made more seasons of the show, there were going to be more of them. And Eddie Murphy had intentions of doing it the season after the season the show ended.
Basically everything from The Chappelle show was fantastic, but the true Hollywood stories were always some of my favorites. I love Charlie Murphy in most everything I've seen him in. Him and Samuel L Jackson in The Boondocks as the two white "gangsta" characters is classic! RIP king!
Gangsta? Not likely. They rarely affiliated with anyone other than themselves. Like most characters on the show, they were parody characters. Ed Wuncler III (voiced by Charlie Murphy) was a parody of a young George W Bush. Gin Rummy (voiced by Samuel L Jackson) was a parody of a young Donald Rumsfeld. Like most things on the show the characters were part of political satire.
@@thequesper4418 duh. Why are you so literal? And gangsta doesn’t mean u have to belong to a gang. It’s a term that is usually just used in place of the word tough, criminal, street, cool, or outlaw.
The other stories Charlie told are almost funnier. "We took him to the brick oven and made pizza with his face". "I almost stomped him. He was there to be stomped. But I know his moms yo."
There's a great clip of Dave Chappelle, I think it during a speech at Eddie's Mark Twain Prize ceremony, talking about how after they made this skit they took it to Eddie's house to show him and like, fact check it. And at the end of the skit Eddie said "it was a suede couch and he had on Capezios!". Lol
there's a third part to this bit that people rarely see. You should check out the wayne brady sketch from Chappelle Show. There's also a sketch where dave gets oprah pregnant.
Man, I can't overstate how big this was when it first aired. Had us all going around saying "I'm Rick James, bitch!" Still can't believe this premiered nearly 20 years ago
Sadly it got to the point that people kept shouting it at Dave's standup shows which is one of the reasons he quit his own show. People just couldn't leave it alone.
I had the privilege of seeing Charlie Murphy in person telling these stories prior to his passing. He was an amazing story teller, and I have found no reason not to believe every bit of them.
I remember being in my early teens when this first came out, and the phrases "F your couch" and "coc@!ne is a hell of a drug" became the things that I said more than anything else... But for another epic all time Chappelle show skit- the Wayne Brady show skit is another all time great
When Chappelle's show came out, random people across the factory floor would be hollering, "WHAT?" then of course came the "OKAY" and "YAYEAH" in response.
RIP Charlie Murphy and Rick James.Charlie Murphy is an extraordinarily talented individual. Was in several movies. His Career was taken off to superstar level when he got sick.
You have to hear the full True Hollywood Stories. It’s just Charlie telling stories with no skits, just hilarious stories. It was the dvd extra. “Give me more!!!”
CLIP IS INCOMPLETE. There is a 3rd story that Charlie Murphy told about Rick James @ the China Club which was originally aired in '03-'04 on the Chappelle Show & is included in the dvd set & on streaming apps but has somehow not been uploaded to youtube. The series dvd set has a few extra Charlie Murphy stories & just fyi, Prince did confirm Charlie's basketball story on some late-night talk show but I can't remember whose or when but Prince did use that pic a Dave Chappelle dressed in the Zorro outfit for one of his (Prince's) albums in the 2000's.
I can watch this a thousand times and still laugh until I cry. Rick James was an over the top personality, so I dont think there was much exaggeration to this. I love your reactions, and you have a nice calming voice...
There are full unedited interviews with Charlie and Rick on the Chappelle show dvd. Also Dave and Neal doing commentary on this episode is hilarious! They said that Charlie's son played Eddie in the skit and in between takes would go "Dad. Uncle Eddie really use to wear stuff like this?"
Charlie was honestly one of the best story tellers ever. He is funny and the whole time he is talking you can't help but to hang on every word. Lucky for him, he also had some of the most entertaining life experiences of any human to share with the rest of us.
I remember 20 or so years ago at the first couple Gathering of the Juggalos festivals when this came out. Campsites would be yelling "fuck yo couch" and "I'm Rick James, bitch!" back and forth. Memories. 🤣
This story alone from Chappelle's Show made such huge contributions to American culture. It's staggering. "Cocaine is a hell of a drug", "Fuck yo couch", "I'm Rick James, bitch!", etc. You say those phrases, and people immediately know what sentiment you are conveying. Brilliant.
Hands down on of the greatest skits ever.....solely because of it's real.....damn shame we never gotten more of the stories because you know Charlie had a hell of a lot more lol
Literally just watched the one where you reacted to the story about Prince, and was really hoping you would do this one. Haven't even watched this one yet just so excited that you reacted to it.
This skit is so funny I brought a copy to Montreal with me when it aired and showed it to some friends of mine that didn't even speak english and they were dying. Thats when you know it's funny.
The first time I watched this when it aired and Rick James just bursts out saying "Cocaine's a hell of a drug," I must have laughed a solid 10 minutes after that. I've lost track of the amount of times that I've seen this story, yet it's still funny to this day.
"See, I never just did things just to do them. Come on, what am I gonna do? Just all of a sudden jump up and grind my feet on somebody's couch like it's something to do? Come on. I got a little more sense then that...Yeah, I remember grinding my feet on Eddie's couch."
I've never seen lines from a show catch fire the way they did from this skit... "I'm Rick James, bitch!" was everywhere, instantly. As well as, "Cocaine's a hell of a drug." "Habitual line stepper" is just fucking Gold.
Dam man Charlie Murphy was a true treasure. Its been said that after he told the story on camera and Dave ran with it and compiled everything and then they did the funny flashback scenes that he sat down with Charlie and he watched the whole thing. Didnt laugh didnt talk. At the end he turns to Dave and says "the couch was red" 🤣
They were waiting time thinking of skits... It came up that Dave knew Rick from his first movie ROBINHOOD MEN IN TIGHTS Rick would hang out in the lobby and entertain people fans and Dave would show up to enjoy his company. That sparked the Charlie Murphy's stories ... they were too good .
There's one more with Rick James, and then there's one from the stuff that didn't make it into season 2 about some other guy that was pretty funny too. It's tragic Charlie didn't get to do more of these. They're comedy treasure.
There's a couple more stories that he tells on the Chapelle show box set that they didn't do a sketch for. One is him getting snowed in with Rick James at his mansion, that is hilarious.
He absolutely did not over exaggerate. 100% true. Rick and Eddie verified the stories
And Micky Free as well 😎 he gives the whole story in an interview.
@@lilkujo yes thank you... iwas going to mention him too, but I brain farted while commenting and couldn't think of his name...lol
Some stuff wasn't quite right. According to Rick, it wasn't the Unity ring but another ring he punched him with (you can see it in the video even, the ring Rick points to does not say Unity). But yeah, seems mostly accurate.
I love how "Cocaine's a hell of a drug." wraps the story up so perfectly. Actual Rick James and the editing elevates the story.
That's not the end of it tho. Wth. What did the 5 fingers say to the face. Slap
@@YourLastWish I just meant the couch story, not the whole series. I just think that story was told particularly well.
Someone once said “The only thing bad about “Charlie Murphy’s!!” stories was that there wasn’t enough of them!!
If Chappelle made more seasons of the show, there were going to be more of them. And Eddie Murphy had intentions of doing it the season after the season the show ended.

Truth is stranger than fiction and Charlie Murphy never failed to tell amazing inside Hollywood stories. He was great on podcasts too. RIP.
I refuse to think he had never seen these Chapelle videos
What podcasts did Charlie do? Never knew that
One of my favorite "skits" from the show. Not for the endless amounts of quotes that most people enjoy, but just for Charlie's delivery. RIP.
You can tell he’s telling the truth 😂😂 Rick was a “habitual line stepper”

Yes, and I still hear people say "Cocaine is a helluva drug!" whenever someone does something inexplicable. 😆
The two most quoted things I've ever heard in my life are "I'm Rick James bitch" and " Cocain is a helluv a drug"...
