Failing and deceiving is a big theme. It includes a huge range of techniques and tactics. This videos shows a couple of examples and some basic rules for this topic.
Akademia Szermierzy gives you the "context" of longsword usage (italian Fiore rather than german Lichtenauer or Meyer, but cool either way). Björn Rüther gives you the proper techniques, great source for teaching and be teached at home. And Martin Fabian's five videos about longswords gives you the motivation to fully get into HEMA through an entertaining display of some key aspects (I now cannot get the "Lichtenauer's Helicopter of Death" out of my mind...). Now stop comparing and complaining and get into longsword fencing already, ya gits!

Once again, I see so many similarities to practical Montante fighting in 1v1 contexts. I use these routinely, although I saw some tweaks I will use in sparring. Thanks for the video :D
5:15 Onward is probably the most valuable bits for the majority of longsword fencers out there... Amazing work! Again with the constructive and realistic (for modern HEMA practitioners at least) instruction.
Im telling you this just to pass on one of the best pieces of advice I have ever found. The basics, and principals of all skills and trades are the foundations of all advanced concepts further down the road. every time I try to critique and further develop my form, technique, and strategy I am somehow always going back to some of the most simple and elementary concepts but just adapting them further.

Very good video! Someone in our study group posted this and I'll be digging through more of your content. I added for my study group that most of the examples in your video rely on your opponent moving to guard your attacks or otherwise get into a bind. Feints or deceiving handworks are less effective against opponents who prefer to void your actions or attack themselves during your tempo (whether because of their aggressive nature or due to your deceptions being predicted despite your intent). Learning your foe as quickly as possible with an out of measure attack can help you determine their preference and how best to deceive them!
In our group we tried an interesting exercise : using Meyer's fencing style against an aggressive opponent (such as you described). And the key was to keep the pressure on by threatening with your point and changing from guard to guard with a cut. This makes it very hard for your opponent to deal with the first obstacle that is your sword. Reading Meyer's book and practicing his techniques, it's clear that long sword was much more mobile than what you can see in competitions today. I hope Bjorn's videos will inspire more HEMA practitioners to use this style, as it is much funnier to practice and watch in my opinion !

@@ColossalSwordFormAndTechnique Well, I'm no expert, but I would believe that most people, even in big battles, would only be exchanging a few blows with a sword in any one situation - if they ever even use the sword. Most of the time people will be fighting with polearms, given their inherent versatility in most situations. Swords are generally only used in emergencies, like in a self-defense situation... and in those cases doing what's best to stay alive takes precedence over other priorities. Just my two cents...

Even in his 1570 book, Meyer tells us that thrusting is too dangerous to be used in sparring or tournament. In my opinion, this source is very appropriate for our modern practice.
@@ColossalSwordFormAndTechnique You will not. Meyer longsword is not for armoured fighting, it's for unarmoured street-fights or duels in civilian clothes. Most of those techniques wouldn't work against metal armour, especially plate: you would need other techniques or weapons (grappling, joint breaking, half-swording, pollaxe, dagger…) Also, a sharp edge wouldn't be useful against metal armour so I don't see your point here. Also also, in a real fight, would you really care about a nick in your blade?? You'd resharpen it later, when you're still unscathed and your opponent isn't.

Im Zugang weit zum öffnen des Gegners...zum treffen dann fix und geschlossen. Das funktioniert. Allerdings macht der Langenort immer Probleme, muss man im Hinterkopf ham ;)
