- When people think of the Battle of Gettysburg, their mind typically goes to the actions that played out at places like Little Round Top or The High Water Mark. But what is commonly overlooked is the experience of the people who lived in Gettysburg who were affected by the battle long after the cannons fell silent. We had an opportunity to preview a new museum in Gettysburg called "Gettysburg: Beyond the Battle" which is an extension of the Adams County Historical Society. So much to see and learn here that will round out your understanding of the Battle of Gettysburg!
Check out more from the Adams County Historical Society on their website (www.achs-pa.org) and on their UA-cam page ( / @adamscountyhistorical... .

“I don’t know if I’d call myself a filmmaker”
JD, you are an absolute artist. Your videos are second to none and some of the best educational media out there. You are 100% a filmmaker. And a damn good one, too.
Thank you. I appreciate that.
I agree, JD's style is like no other. I would call this channel top tier. I have been watching his channel since the start.
Please don't undersell yourself and the amazing content you consistently publish. You're not just some guy with a camera, you're the "Ken Burns" to this next generation of history buffs!
Hear ! hear !
i agree been around since 90k subs, my by far favorite content creator i’ve ever seen. hands down
You can't say it truer🎉
That’s a cool thing to say😊
Agreed
Ashokan Farewell featured in the Ken Burns Civil War documentary was my grandmother's favorite song. It has a special place in my heart!
It really is something else. It was the song that was played at my uncle's funeral.
They played it during my nephew's wedding. It's a good song but heaven knows why they selected it as a song at their wedding!
I just wanted to tell you my appreciation of this channel. I’m a fellow historian and have dedicated most of my life to studying and teaching what many people would like to be forgotten. It gets frustrating and I can’t tell you how much it means to see other historians working so hard to preserve and teach our world’s history. Instant sub here!
I'm a historian as well. I have absolutely no patience for "revisionists". History should never be altered to be more "PC'.
From start to finish, you can sure hear and see the excitement in his voice and the bounce in his step. Sounds like this was a very special day for the host, the channel and our community.
J .D. while you may not have the entire "Hollywood" production at your disposal your video's are more than just some guy with a camera. I and many of us find your videos informative and entertaining in a way that only a guy dedicated to his craft can bring us. You have developed a group of steadfast followers and that does not come easy. Us history buffs are a strange bunch and we come from all walks of life brought together by one thing, the love of learning and understanding the events of our past. Keep up the great work.
Love the work that Ken Burns shot at the Alaskan National Parks. Incredible footage and he’s an exceptional story teller!
J.D. don’t sell yourself short. You are becoming a really good story teller. Keep up the great work 👍👍
You and Gary are national treasures. Thank you both.
Thank you, JD for bringing this to our eyes and ears. Thanks to you, I’ve been to all these places in a way yet not actually having being to these places in person. One day I pray I will visit these places you’ve shown us on your channel. Blessings…
Glad you enjoyed it!
What I like about Ken Burns series on the Civil War would be personal letters between soldiers and family. I don't know how old he was when he presented the documentary, but it was amazing that a young man has such a gift for telling the story. On a personal side my great-grandmother had her own experience when she was about 12 years old (as the story past down from her to my mother) They would bury their flour etc. to hide it from the Union Soldiers.
You are a regular dude with a camera….with an amazing creative ability and passion to go along with it. Thank you, Andrew
Agreed many thanks for his time and thoroughness in putting his pieces together I have hemiplegia so at this point I can only visit and learn watching from my wheelchair although I now live in VA location of much civil war history particularly love looking at the artifacts and the story of the Gettysburg residents
Also want to read Killer Angels now
Wow, Jeff Shaara and Gary Adelman too! Great stuff as always. I definitely want to go to that Museum.
Pretty cool day :)
JD you are absolutely a filmmaker and Great teller and chronicler of History, your videos make history enjoyable and interesting to learn about Thank you
I’m so grateful that the story of the battle at Gettysburg is finally being told from the context of its geography, history and citizens. Most people don’t realize that the battle and the skirmishes beforehand covered a much larger area than just the perimeter of the national battlefield site. My dad was a Civil War history buff who took me to visit the places that most tourists miss when they visit there. The two of us spent hours roaming around the greater Gettysburg area. I had no idea that the area was so extensive! We also conjectured what it must’ve been like for the citizens of the town to be under siege for three days, especially if in their cellars all they could do was listen to the horrible slaughter going on around them outside and praying that a mortar shell wouldn’t blow up their homes and instantly kill them or that Confederate soldiers wouldn’t loot their homes and murder them. And then to finally emerge from their cellars and be greeted with scenes of carnage and death everywhere for miles. Too bad that PTSD (shell shock) wasn’t an identifiable condition back then so that the civilians and soldiers could get the necessary help that they needed to process what had just happened and had irrevocably changed their lives forever. The physical and emotional scars inflicted on all of them must’ve been beyond comprehension!
JD you are a historian and a filmmaker. Your channel is proof of your skills as both. Just got home from work to finish watching from this morning.
I’ve watched videos of this museum from the very beginnings stages. Now to see it finally finished is totally amazing. Thank you for bringing us along with you. Love Gary A. He is definitely one of the best Gettysburg and Civil War Historians I’ve learned from. Please keep doing videos from Gettysburg. This is where I first met you when you did a series on Gettysburg. I’ve been a huge fan ever since. Thank you for all you do to keep history alive for everyone. 👍🙂
Much appreciated. Got a bit more from Gettysburg on the horizon with some long term plans that I'm working on.
@@TheHistoryUnderground To me, Ken Burns is America's story teller. From the beginning as the colonies up until today. I loved how he narrated the Civil Rights Movement and the 60's.
Totally geeked out that my fave author was there! Jeff Shaara! Seriously cannot thank you enough and those who work with you for all the content you share!
Visited here in 1984 and 2003. I'm amazed at how the National Park Service has preserved Gettysburg
as accessible, educational, beautiful and as historically authentic as possible.
Thanks for the video. Been to Gettysburg one time back in September and definitely want to go back. Especially after watching your videos. Thank you for what you do.
Always something to see there. Love that place.
We took a tour of Eisenhower’s house. The tour guide told us an interesting story. The seller of the house sold it for more than the house was worth, and did not Inform him that the 1700s house had tremendous structural problems. Eisenhower was determined to keep as much of the original structure as possible. Which unfortunately, was only the front face of the house. Anyway, a very enjoyable time in Gettysburg. Learned lots! Thank you for the tour of this museum. Can’t get out like I used to, so it’s quite a service to those like me, who enjoy history.
The whole Gettysburg Campaign is so fascinating to me!! I really like your coverage and association with Eric Dorr! Thank You!!🇺🇸🎩🇺🇸🎩🇺🇸
What a beautiful museum! Thank you for sharing with us. Can’t wait to visit Gettysburg again
That was truly, "Pretty Dang Cool!" Thank you as always JD!
Agreed!
I hate to be the one to have to tell you this JD, but.....yes, you're a filmmaker. And a pretty damn good one at that!
every time i watch Burns' "Civil War"i learn something new or interesting ...and the music was haunting and very appropiate throughout the film...finally visited in 2019 and was blown away and felt a reverence all across the battlefield
Your videos have been my tour guide to areas I may never have the chance to visit. As both a Civil War and WW2 history buff, you have taken me to locations I’ve read about and helped me understand the events that took place. Like you, my interest in the Civil War was sparked by the Ken Burns series. Thank you so much for your hard work and enthusiasm!
Always great to see and hear Ken Burns. I've recently bought the bluray of his Civil War Doc. I've always wanted to own it, since the first time watching it. And JD, you may not be a Ken Burns, but you do something so valuable by keeping American history alive for your viewers. You're not some history professor talking down to students. You are rather more like a friend along for the ride. I agree with others who have commented, it's your obvious love and respect for history that comes through in every video! When you visit these historic places, you do it in a way that makes the viewer feel as if they're invited along on the trip. One of my favorite JD quotes? " when ya'll visit this place, have some regard for where you are and pick up your dad-gum masks!!! " I love it ! Keep doing what you do, JD. Don't change a thing.
JD, this is truly excellent! A battle is often studied and shown from a military perspective. Often forgetting the civilian population. I think it's great that a museum brings that to people's attention.
The Burns Civil War doc is the quintessential historical documentary. Its literally the reason I majored in American history. He made the Civil War relevant again.
I love your video’s from Gettysburg. You make the battle come alive. Thanks to you and Eric.
You do a great job of humanizing what most people only know from what is written in books. You show emotion and feeling, and you help the viewers see through your eyes what they may never see but have a passion for.
This was absolutely wonderful! Thanks again JD!
JD you and Gary are so awesome thank you guys so much!
I have huge respect for Ken Burns. His subjects for filming, and the filming itself, are done with respect and sensitivity, whatever the subject. If we come across any of his work (usually on PBS America) my husband and I very often watch. You yourself do a great job with your filming. A lot of us can't get to the US, and this is the best way of learning the history, and it's causes and consequences, of the US. Thank you for your teaching. It's fascinating. Don't give it up whatever you do!
Don't YOU dare sell yourself short JD! I love your videos and how informative they are with a touch of your sense of humor mixed in. You're very good at narratives of different wars that the United States were involved in. You have a gift chronicling important events to preserve our history, even when there are those who are trying to erase it. Can't wait for your next video. I haven't watched Ken Burns' documentary on the Civil War. I was born in September of 1963, one hundred years after the Civil War period. Have a great day!
My wife and I will be in Gettysburg this week. This is definitely on our list now.
👍🏻
The History Underground with another amazing video! Thank you for the work you put in.
What a feeling to sit at the table you did. Excellent episode 👍👍
Had a good time. Thanks!
The Ken Burns civil war documentary is simply the best civil war documentary I’ve seen! I’ve watched it 3 times in the last 4 years! Every winter I take it out an watch it.
Just gotta say love Ken's civil war series... that being said, his recent mainstream media bs has me worried that from here on out his documentaries will be politically biased with the facts lacking....don't take this as hate, still love his older documentaries, but in today's climate I fear for his integrity.
Wow. Just wow. Thank you J D for taking the time to share this with us. An incredible presentation of the new museum. I hope to visit Gettysburg one day. I live in chattanooga and had ancesters that survived chickamauga. The Civil War is ever present to this day in so many areas of the country. Again thank you.
Amazing place!
Thank you so much!!!! I have only visited Gettysburg once. When my daughter was looking at universities, we made a trip to the east coast. I told her I was more than happy to drive her on this adventure - but we were spending time in Gettysburg. No arguments. I will never forget my time there. I've worn out my DVDs of Burns' documentary. Both my daughter and I now live outside the US and the chance of seeing this museum is therefore slim - so thank you so much for taking us through it. It is now on the bucket list. Really enjoy your channel.
Mr. Burns ... Your work is remarkable as you well know. PLEASE do a series on the history of the White House or especially on the complete gutting of the WH during the 1950 Truman restoration. Thank you.
I own and love Ken Burns Civil War series! And hope to visit this museum in the near future, so thanks so much for the teaser!
👍🏻
I live in PA and I cant visit Gettysburg enough times. I love it there. You're literally smack dab in the middle of American history.
I loved Killer Angels.
Excellent episode, JD. Thank you !!

Absolutely fascinating! I want to visit this place so much. Thanks you for making history come alive.

Hope you like it!
I visited Gettysburg all the time. Since moving from Frederick Maryland to Nashville TN I miss that PA town greatly. Grateful you did this video of this new museum.
Thanks!
I'm a Pennsylvanian, and a reeanactor. My unit of Birney's Division is headquartered in Gettysburg, so I'm there quite often. Thank you for showcasing these museums and this town. Your work is amazing.
Another great program, preserving history. I would love to visit the area and the museum.
You'll love it!
Really well done… Thanks for sharing!
I can't wait to visit this museum. I've been following it's construction since the beginning. Totally cool to have legends like Garry Adelman and Tim Smith in another one of your videos.
This is Great! How exciting.
I just got back from a vacay in Gettysburg, and I went because I love your videos! It is a wonderful town! Thank you for your insight on it and the history!
That was great to see! You are a filmmaker JD💯%
This video is great with you sharing the new Gettysburg (after) museum and the opinions and history!
You were really good at adding citizens accounts on some of your previous series. This is awesome. I love Ken Burns. Great video 👍🏼😎
I enjoyed seeing Garry Adelman. Great video JD on a great museum. Someday I’ll get there. For now I am glad you brought it to me!
Garry is the man!
Outstanding video, thanks so much. It looks like a fantastic museum.
Glad you enjoyed it
As always your videos are top notch! The year Ken Burn's presentation of "The Civil War" came out I was in the midst of raising a family, in the middle of my working life. I was very excited for it and was also equally excited from watching it. I have worked on my family history, well I continue to do so, it is a never ending joy. I had relatives who fought on both sides. I have yet to find any who fought in Gettysburg though. Gettysburg is on my bucket list. Your video is excellent, I hope to shake your hand some day, thank you, from one dumb monkey to another.
In 1993 while wandering around the battlefield, I struck up a conversation with a young man who was a recent graduate of West Point. He explained all of the battle points to me over a two day period, I’ll never forget that kind and knowledgeable young gentleman nor too the depth of his explanations.
Wow! A lot of all stars at that lunch. Love Ken Burns, Jay Unger and Molly Mason. Always watch his Civil War series. Another documentary that I love of his is Lewis and Clark. The corps of discovery. This museum reminds me of a book I recently read. When the smoke cleared at Gettysburg. Amazing book talking about the history of Gettysburg, the battle and the aftermath
Mag Palm has become my new hero. What a women!!!! I so want to come visit this museum. Dinosaur tracks and all the pre Europeans parts seem so interesting. My 7 year old Grandson watches your video's with me. Just now grasping slavery and it's continued effects on blacks.
I visited the museum during my last trip in October and enjoyed it. This was great!
What a cool sneak peek. I’ll definitely be stopping by here when I’m back in Gettysburg. Thanks for another great video.
You'll love it!
Dang JD, you just keep producing so much great content. Bravo.
👊🏻
Great to see Gary and Tim in this video.
Been to Gettysburg four (4) times. Looking forward to my next trip and visiting this museum.
Thanks brother for sharing this video so informative and interesting!!✌️🇺🇲
You are definitely a film maker and documentary film maker. Keep rocking!!! Watch every clip/video
My husband and I did that this summer and it was awesome! It was worth it.
I was pleasantly surprised to see Jay and Molly playing-I'm a big fan-thanks for a great video JD!
Awesome! Ken Burns is amazing!
Amazing video! My family and I go evwry few years. We love to explore. ❤
Agreed am always delighted to find a history traveler I have not seen JD: thanks for creating your UA-cam pieces on the various Civil War battlefields 😬:job well done and thanks
Thanks for your amazing content regardless of the subject. It’s all very educational and very well done. You’re always a favorite contributor of mine on UA-cam!
Man I can't wait to go back now and go to this!
JD: you did a fantastic job with this video! For 30 years, I lived in Pennsylvania and worked for the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC). I lose count on the number of times that I have visited and worked in Gettysburg for the PHMC. This new Adams County Historical Building has been built after I moved away from Pennsylvania. Your video brought me right back to the area that I cherish. I do want to add ONE fact: you showed the boundary stone that had the crests of the two families that owned the land originally. Please note that it is the WILLIAM PENN FAMILY Crest that has the three round symbols on this stone!! Thank you again for this wonderful trip for me - once more to Gettysburg!!
I first visited Gettysburg in 1960 at age 11. My uncle Morris Mitzel of York, Pa. led me and my dad to Little Round Top, "The Angle" and "High Water" mark of the Confederacy on Cemetery Ridge. He was not a historian but knew from reading or previous visits the critical nature of them. We walked areas defended by the 20th Maine and the 2nd Corps. I was amazed and have not forgotten it.
What a cool one! Ken Burns, Garry Adelman, Tim Smith, and of course JD. I even saw a glimpse of Kris White. Talk about a who's who of some of my favorite people! Super cool video!
You do a good job also, you help bring this to life, I went to Gettysburg in 1968 ? when I was a kid and have always had an interest in the Subject, I am reading US Grant right now, it is a LONG book almost 1,000 pages.
Love that you got Garry in there! Love him! Great video JD!
Garry is the man.
Incredible video, well done 👍
Hey., your wrong that your just a video guy. Your series is full of insight and perspectives on everything you share. You rock like Ken Burns !!! Big fan here of yours. Hope to meet you someday.
Appreciate that :)
I want to visit again and maybe spend more than one day there, a LOT to see.
Always great work JD
I would LOVE to attend something like this!!! What a neat event!!!!!
For a “dumb monkey with a camera”, you’ve sure got me hooked JD! For history nerds everywhere, thanks much!
