I think that I just watched a 28 minute Rob Cosman tutorial on setting up a Chinese produced copy of a Stanley Bedrock plane. Almost word for word but with a heavy U.K. accent. I see Rob Cosman’s influence everywhere. Rob and Paul Sellers are two of the most popular woodworking contributors on UA-cam as well as two of the most respected instructors in their foeld.

I just bought my first hand plane (no 4) and I followed this video step by step to set it up. I can’t tell you how buzzed I was when I tried my first piece of wood and got that magic wafer thin roll of shavings. A big thank you for taking the time and trouble to explain everything in such detail, in an easy to understand way. I’ve had a set of chisels for 2 years and never used them. I’ll follow your chisel video and release them on my work! 😊

I’d love to see a video of trying to use the plane out of the box, then compare it to after you’re tune up! Great video as always

Thanks for the video! A piece of feedback... I've been doing a lot of searching of videos for the Luban planes, but this one never came up cause it's not mentioned in the title. I expect a lot of people are looking into these planes cause they're so affordable. I'd love to see a video of you showing all your planes (especially the Luban), and what you think of them. Thanks again! 😊

That was a great video. I want to unplug and move to using hand tools more but I never realised how much needed to be done to a new plane to get it working well. Thanks

Great job John. I have a 5.5 low angle jack plane to get to work on over the weekend. Your video was just what I needed. Thank you. Peter

Great video I’m just starting and i would have tried to use straight out of the box. Thanks

Great video!!! I have got no.6 Luban (Quangsheng-Luban) great plan as you said good straight out of the box, the tuning of the plan took me 40 minutes... In my Irwin record plans ( 4,5) i replace the blade, lever cap and the yoke to Quangsheng-Luban ones( didn't cost much). For the shooting board i have Stanley no.62 good plan ( i think that it's blade is harder than the Quangsheng-Luban one) for the s shooting board is more comfortable than my no.6.

I can testify that The sole of the plane will move when you put the frog and blade in place. I used the surface grinder at work to flatten the sole of an old Record no 06 I was restoring. I couldn’t get the plane under the grinding wheel with the frog attached so I removed it and flattened the sole to within 1/10th of a thou along its length. I Put the frog back on and had a hollow of about a thou. Still, The plane works beautifully, so I don’t think it’s very significant. Also the ground surfaces of the plane are so smooth that they never rust even then others in the same cabinet pick up surface rust. That was 15 years ago and it still looks like new.

Nice overview John. I like my vintage planes and have been lucky to acquire decent users in the sizes I need, but I'm still itching to get my hands on one of the Quangsheng planes sometime and give it a whirl! They're a lovely bit of kit and no mistake.
Your 5 1/2 here seems to have particularly attractive handles, always nice when you get lucky that way :-)

    Great video keep them coming.
The trick with the screw on the chip breaker is a great idea to keep it at the right angle.
I will try it when I get around to restoring an old Stanley I got on ebay

Ireland and China a perfect partnership, only ones to help them in the pandemic too.
Would be nice to see a comparison with an elderly record or bailey please

David I seen you posted about stopping rust on John's latest video , check out sand-flex hand blocks , they do them in 3 different grits . Amazing for removing rust on tools , Rob cosman has them on his site and you can get them from other places aswell .

This plane looks identical to the Woodriver. I wonder if they are made by the same company in China and only the lever caps are different.

They make them for wood river.

It'd depends how bad it is, it may not be worthwhile it it's too deep, however if the the front and back and around the mouth is flat then its probably OK

OK.. but I won't support a communist regime with my money....
Why not buy British. Go to Thomas Flinn and look for Clifton planes. British built quality tools. And not expensive.

    • @JohnMcGrathManInShed
      @JohnMcGrathManInShed  2 роки тому +1

Clifton planes are very nice but twice the price and I bought these from a British shop. But with Brexit I can't get anything from the UK because of the extra cost of import duty.

@@JohnMcGrathManInShed these very same planes are sold here in the United States under the brand name "Woodriver." Luban planes are almost identical, but have a wee bit less quality. Such as slack in some mating surfaces and some parts made of lesser grade steel. I collect and restore old Stanley planes, the ones I use for every day are the woodriver brand.
Good job on the video, brother.

You know a lot. I don't You talk way to fast, especially as you have an accent that is not clear to my ears. You talk too much, adding info way too much and discussing things I don't need to know yet. I just want to know how to make the damn thing work, mine doesn't. I don't even know if the blade on mine is up or down... you don't show this up close, for the first part the camera is far. I NEED TO SEE ONLY THE PLANE ON THAT WHITE BOARD, THAT IS HOW CLOSE I NEED IT. That way I would know if the pieces are setting correctly against each other, chip blade up or down, etc. You flip those things back and forth... confusing. THEN, you finally get to using it, and you reach behind the handle and adjust something.. Mine has three things to adjust, I think you are moving the big one, but.... Not sure. You know it is going to work, don't you? I wish you could be here in my garage and see how a beginner looks at things. Mine says it is a stanley plane. I would suggest you make another video and just deal with the adjustment part first. Up close, and go slowly on the part just before you adjust whatever that is in the back of the plane. This is the confusing part, not the sanding parts down, etc. Oh, yes, you used a file on the sides, what kind of file, fine or ? Good luck, and think of beginners and foreigners like me who are basically dumb and are clueless. Thank you.
