Is this the future of cymbal making? It is really an amazing time that we can get so close to the craftsmen and women that create our instruments. I sent Lasse Funch my 1956 old K zildjian to be cloned and he sent me back an absolutely incredible instrument. I hope you all agree.

There sure is something special about that old K. The Funch makes the perfect companion to it. Not twins, but sisters.

I feel like you were instrumental to saving a sound and a cymbal making technique from the passing of time. Now someone knows how to clone it, and it's on the internet. Now we'll have 50 K's forever!!! Literally something to get emotional over.

The Funch’s replica sounds extraordinary good. It sounds to me like it “unveils” the cymbal and lets it sings to its full potential. Great work!

I think the Funch takes it. The stick sound and its separation from the metal sound is just about perfect. I also think the old K has probably settled down so much that the rivets are choking it, and it would benefit from having at least half of them removed.

Again.. bravo for having done this interview video. Lasse definitely has a gift, the talent and a hell of an ear to pick up every little subtilities of a cymbal. There is just this little more "butter" on the Funch that gives it somewhat more life. Definitely two great cymbals and I will be curious to hear how Lasse's will age.

The Funch is significantly better and sounds a lot like the best old K's I've encountered: it has no conflicting tones within it (no "warble") and the separation between the stick click and the underlying wash is just amazing.

WOW! That was my reaction when you hit that Funch. It's SO close it's nuts, I did NOT expect that!!!! The K has maybe a little more of a "hum" and the Funch is a bit more perfect functionally. Great and very informative video. It’s fantastic to hear from talented craftsmen who know so much about cymbal making.
I always found it interesting that drummers are kind of obsessed with those early Ks in an effort to achieve the sound of the Jazz greats, but using cymbals that have now aged 60 to 70 years since that era. With today’s knowledge (and also exchange of knowledge), techniques and some guys’ craftsmanship, I have the impression there is hardly anything that can’t be achieved in modern cymbals.

I was introduced to the cymbal Masterpieces of Roberto by a Good Friend now departed; he had a collection of some 35 cymbals by the time he passed. I too made a number of Pilgrimages to Lee's house myself and although I HAVE Thinned the Herd, I still have several and this Artist is without a doubt destinated to be on the same level, Congrats to you AND him!! I do feel there's more spread to the Funch instrument and it has a clearly a lower Fundamental pitch as well. How the cymbal feels under the stick is important too but that seems to be on par with the other attributes as you demonstrated it in this video!!

They work so well together! I'm kind of in the same boat in that I've bought a few cymbals from him and all are amazing! But more than that, I special ordered a k dark complex clone from Paul Francis and he hit it out of the park, even though that like your Funch and K, the pitches are different the CHARACTER and ESSENCE of the original is in spades in the clone. It's a great time to be a player, collector or....cymbalholic!

The Funch, to my ear, sounds higher. It is a nice contrast to the low of the original K. Together you have a very sweet set of cymbals.

When the listener know which is which and you already gave your opinion before the sound comparisons, most people will agree with you. Should have been a blind test to eliminate expectation bias.

That Funch is like hearing God, how he imitated those lathing patterns is mind-blowing, that's some Sherlock Holmes stuff.

Sounds great but the K is a little darker

They sound very similar, given that the Funch is a tone lower than the K. And both sound great once you start riding them.
Very interesting to hear about the lathing process.

wish that you had shown the position and model of overhead mics and the total height of your room. since we are talking bout recorded sound, mics and placement make a huge impact on the overall feel. and this is of importance, as classic jazz styles are in fact highly connected with those classic recordings of the grand ol days. just my 2 ct. anyhow, great comparison between the two, and great playing style! count me interested in the funch brand, now.

I love both cymbals and I think they sound great together. Can I ask what sticks you were using? Thanks.
