Guillermo, I have been working my way through your videos. Today I came back to this one and I was able to grasp so much more of your message. I'll be going back to basics, assessing where I am with the palo I know most, solea, and the dialect I speak, guitar. I find that I have some technique, I have been working on compas with your videos, but I'm starting out to learn language elements and cante.
Thank you for lesson, it has been eye opening.

As usual, a very important message full of crucial information. The issue is that most people studying Flamenco have limited time since they have to dedicate most of their days to the other parts of their lives (family, study, work), and most have come to Flamenco later in life, and many don't speak Spanish. I feel that really mastering this art is a life long, constant, all-consuming effort. Also, students in Flamenco classes logically want to learn choreographies, since it is the fun part. So, I believe the teachers should concentrate in conveying the important information beyond just teaching steps. Your reminders in this video are crucial to progress both as a student and as a teacher. Thank you as always. Your work is very important for all of us lovers of this art.

Thank you very much Marisela! 🙏🙃 It's true that most people unfortunately cannot spend more time doing flamenco, and enjoying the choreographies seems to be the main access point, but it seems that frustration always awaits them at some point. That's why I wanted to make this video. In fact, if we don't have a lot of time to study and practice, that's even more of a reason to strategize. We can do a lot more than we think with consistency and organization, a little bit at a time. My purpose is to give hope and directions. I hope I’m not discouraging anyone! 😱
      Abrazo!

@@FlamencoMAPS Oh no, you are not discouraging EVER, rather, you are placing the emphasis on very important things. I was just trying to also convey the reality of the limitations most people have in terms of time, language knowledge, and the need to feel like they are achieving something by learning a choreography. But all of your points are right on, and as I said, I believe they are very important particularly for teachers. As you know, I study daily the history, intricacies, and complications of this art form both as an academic, and as a dancer. And yet I discover daily that it is never enough, it is really a life long journey of very intentional and strategic dedicated study. But, as a teacher, I also know the difficulties my students face when trying to grasp all the basic information combined with their desire to enjoy performing choreographies. So, I try to convey in all of my classes the importance of the four points you make: Technique, Rhythm & Compás, Flamenco Language, and Familiarity with Cante. I even do that when performing in Tablaos, explaining to the public the main elements of the history, the cante, etc, as much as possible. But on the other hand, one has to be realistic about what to expect. It is a balancing act. But I think this video is crucial and a good reminder for all, particularly for teachers. I already sent it to all of my students and flamenco aficionados I know. Thank you as usual, keep up the good work!
