    In hip-hop, the temptation to do audacious and overstretch yourself is easy to understand. After all, the genre is more crowded than ever and in order to get a piece of that coveted real estate, it’s been proven that sometimes, it takes a lot more than lyrical acumen or a couple of serviceable songs to break out.
    But where someone of the caliber of Eminem has his mentor Dr Dre to tell him when he was going “too far” on Kamikaze and compelled him to tone it down, it’s safe to say that when ambition takes the lead over common sense, little can stop you from making an error that a veteran may be able to avoid.
    With that said, it’s time to delve into times in which rappers, in pursuit of fame, clout, street credentials or some combination of the three, have gone too far.

    11:25 I especially like this moment right here. It's actually chilling to hear how people who done their time actually talk and present themselves. There is this eerie weight to the most ordinary words. They are not proud of having to endure hardships and commiting crimes, most of the time they didn't see or didnt have other choice, it's not some fun pastime that you can "enjoy", so it must feel incredibly disheartening hearing some random fake glorifying your violence and loss that entails it, while having zero idea what's that really like to go through.

    Honestly, just making great music and being more skilled than everyone will get you into the spaces you need to be. You don't need the gimmicks or even necessarily the popularity. The greats will find you if you're truly skilled. A perfect example of this is KAAN. KAAN just flat out outrapped and outworked everyone. Now KAAN is working with Dr. Dre and Busta Rhymes on a 30 song album, and he work with/hangs out in the same social circles/studios of guys like J Cole, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dog, Freddie Gibbs, The Game etc. Focusing on the aesthetic is cool and all, but, ultimately, the music is what matters. That's what shines through at the end of the day and creates lasting longevity and timeless art. This is why XXXtentacion was so great imo. He not only had a great sense of aesthetics and optics, but he also had the skill and musical quality to match.

    • @myjciskate4
      @myjciskate4 2 роки тому +12

      💯 KAAN is incredible. The same can be said for JID, too. They're not anywhere as popular as a lot of other artists, but they're highly, highly respected by the greats, because they're once in a generation artists with immense skill. In other words, "Get Good".

KAAN came up during the SoundCloud era, yet still managed to climb up the ranks with a more lyrical style. I recently watched a few minutes of Vert at some festival this summer and it was straight trash. The dude was "rapping" to backing tracks the entire time and only rapped when he wasn't jumping around with the ridiculously oversized clothes on. It sucked. But there were legions of loyal fans in the comments saying that it was the best set he's ever done etc. It truly made me realize how out of touch with new rap I am. I just don't get it and can't quantify the total lapse in quality. Meanwhile at the same festival Action Bronson was ripping the mic, flawless clarity on every word and no backing tracks. Just raw beats and raps. That's fucking rap. We need more Griselda and less this bullshit. The artform is dying.

    I actually have some respect for Lil Uzi Vert. The pink diamond he purchased cost 24 million dollars which is an astounding amount of money. However, he said he saved his money for 3 years to buy the diamond. I respect that he was shrewd enough to save his money for such a big purchase. It looked stupid as hell in his forehead, but since he had it removed, it is actually an investment for him. If he is cash strapped he can always sell it.
