I modified my broadfork by soldering 45 degrees 1/8'' reinforcements going from below the rods elbow up to the horizontal piece (where you place your foot). Solved everything, now it can even dig up rocks in the most compact clay bed without breaking a sweet. Everything stays in place, it's the wooden handles that are bending haha but it's all good! :)

Valley Oak tools also makes a great broadfork! No need to worry about the rocks.

After watching several videos about broadforks I was really intrigued. Here in NYC none of the big box stores have them (most never heard of it before). I tried using a pitchfork and had what appears to be he same results. Other than the width of the tool, what is the difference between using a broadfork and a pitchfork?

What kind of black foil do you use to cover your unused beds?

Could I interest you in some my concrete-hard clay in exchange for your soil? ;) I fork but have to use a 5 tine and one with gussets for strength. I hope one day our soil looks like yours!

The soil took years and hard work. You'll get there

by just broadforking how long could I expect my weed pressure to be down if I am tarping when not in use.

I couldn't say. Depends on all your weed suppression methods. Also, I don't use tarping as a weed suppression technique at least not on production beds
