He says HIMSELF in his autobiography that it is possible that his white master is his father, but since he was only able to see his mother in secret a few times as a toddler before she died he was never able to ask. So no, no one is claiming "after the fact" that he is half-white. It was something he had to deal with his entire life, and yes, I say "deal" because in many slave narratives you will see that being the child (or alleged child) of a master is not a blessing but a curse in most cases.

He also told his slave master (Auld) he loved him, but that he hated slavery.

It's crazy how this video is more of a commentary about what happened than a history of it.

It’s a shortened version of an entire series called America the Story of Us. It’s not the whole video. But like most things here it is mainly about big ideas and information which includes commentary, if you want pure history you shouldn’t even look at the History channel, you should look at primary sources. Frederick Douglass multiple autobiographies, he tells you with his own words how rough the nation was on him and people like him

He was self-taught. He literally played a game with other kids who tried to show him he did not know how to read, but as they did so he learned.

I would mention that he didn't have enough nerve to remain within his race which is the best thing black people can do for our struggle. However, I admire him for his work outside his personal choices.

Frederick Douglass was actually taught how to read, even though he was a slave. He was a really well educated abolitionist!!

What an insult to the immortal, national treasure Douglass to have a hack like Sharpton narrate this video. Sharpton lost all credibility with the Brawley hoax decades ago. Unbelievable.

His actions helped slavery to end because he was a writer and his work got into the newspaper, and people read all about the life of a slave and more people became aware

Wth is Al Sharpton talking about?
When did Douglass imply he could speak better for the slaves than other abolitionists?
He never said nor implied that.
    Lies.

I'm a Mexican from Jalisco, Mexico.
And if I was white, why would it matter?
How would these refute my question about AL Sharpton's stupid comment.

Why Al Sharpton? Why not Thomas Sowell? Fredrick Douglass was for real and he was a hero. Al is a grifter and a charlatan.

Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey was half white. A great man - but his complete story is never told - why is that? Simple - it does not fit the narrative. I think it makes him even more compelling. He took the name Douglas and added the additional s. His second wife was white and 20 years his junior. An American legend.
