  • Are you suffering from lumbar spinal stenosis? It's a type of back pain that tends to bother people that are over 50, 60, 70 or beyond years of age. I'm going to cover with you today, an exercise routine that you can do if you think that you've got lumbar spinal stenosis or spinal stenosis in your lower back.
Our focus today is going to be in helping somebody who's got a low back stenosis problem. But let me tell you about stenosis, in case you don't really know a lot about it and you're looking to learn more, and this is the first time you're looking for information about it. There are two types of stenosis. The lower back one is called central stenosis and the other is called lateral stenosis. Another name for lateral stenosis is foraminal stenosis. They mean the same thing.
Stenosis just means that there's an opening where nerves pass that is closing off, and stenosis in the low back, it's affecting the nerves that come off the low back that end up going into the legs.
So oftentimes people that have stenosis in their back may have back problems or may not, they may not actually feel any pain in their back that is significant. Maybe they have a little bit of tightness or stiffness from time to time. But oftentimes, what they do experience is some sort of pain or discomfort into both legs, or at least one leg more than the other, but both legs tend to be affected most times.
Left untreated, people with stenosis might end up having a surgery to clean out the areas where the narrowing is happening and allow more space for the nerves. Here, at El Paso Manual Physical Therapy, we do help people with lumbar stenosis problems. And we do it naturally in a way that opens up the spaces using muscles, using stretches, using the own body to naturally create more space around those nerves.

Doc, I haven't seen the curling of the back stretch technique before today. It looks very practical and helpful. I have lumbar stenosis that primarily affects the nerves in my left leg and foot. It's not so fun, but I call tell others the problems in my low back, like locking up have gone after strengthening my abs, obliques, legs and glutes.. From my navel down, I'm nearly as strong as I was in my thirties. I'm now 66. I encourage everyone to strengthen their core, glutes and legs. In four months I've made vast improvements. I should add that because of my new core strength, I no longer feel shock in my lumbar when my foot strikes the ground when walking. Build strength and power for a better, more comfortable life!

Sir, my MRI reads that I have moderate lateral stenosis. I also have a mild bulge at L5-S1. However, my symptoms are not typical of your lumbar stenosis patient. I keep reading that stenosis patients get relief when bending over when pushing a grocery cart or after sitting down. My symptoms are exacerbated by sitting down or even lying down. And yes, I do have more glute pain on one side than the other with pain and numbness down the leg , ankle, and foot. But I do have occasional numbness or pain on the opposite side of the more painful side. So, am I suffering from spinal stenosis? I am 67 years old and my pain is every day. Have been treated with epidural spine shots and pain medication. What are your thoughts regarding how my pain is manifested?

My lumber spinal stenosis is in chronic stage. Pain has vanished or you can say is very minimal pain is there. Major problem i am facing whenever i go for a walk or stand for 10-12 mts my numbness starts from left leg and few minutes it covers both the legs as well as my groin area.
