- Worry is growing in India’s Punjab region about the country's rising tensions with Canada, and many in the state's Sikh community tell CBC News that support for the Khalistan Independence Movement is very low. Earlier this month, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Canada is pursuing 'credible allegations' linking Indian government agents to the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen who was campaigning for an independent Sikh state.

We are very very very very proud of our sikh minority.
True…I heard one of khalistani saying sikhs are oppressed in India and I was surprised to hear that how easily propaganda can manipulate people’s minds. I have many Sikh friends (very good friends) and never felt like Khalistan is even an issue. Sikhs are proportionally the largest participants be it sports, army, politics. I often visit gurudwara and when we sit in lunger, the prayer is offered to “Ram”. So no surprise that Khalistanis cannot separate Ram from Ram.
As a Canadian citizen you can ask “Khalistan within Canada” NOT in India.
Punjab, not Canada, is the Sikh homeland and will become the new country of Khalistan for the Sikh people.

The man in the video, Amanpal Singh, is a true human! We do not need a nation based on religious lines. India has and always will be a nation of Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Jains etc. Governments come and go, but our love for fellow countrymen would never be based on religious lines. That's not how it works. If a party in power unleashes genocidal violence against a community (with police, judicial and army involvement), then that country holds the legal liability. If a new party comes to power, that doesn't mean that the liability disappears. If it were the case that legal liability would lapse as soon as a party was voted out of power then any law enacted or any treaty signed when that party is in power would automatically lapse when another party came into power.

The small percentage of Indian Sikhs that support Khalistan is due to support from Canadian Sikhs, who ditched Punjab and India to take Canadian citizenship, in their greed for a better lifestyle. Now they want to target India and destroy it from outside.
There was recently a sting operation by a UK based newspaper that exposed how Khalistan and Sikh persecution is being used to get asylum when all those cases are of economic migration.

It is brewed by selected few overseas Sikhs who migrated half a century ago, doing odd jobs in Canada and have nothing better to do than violent acts and organized crimes in the garb of political activism. Now they have a loud voice in the form of a political party.
It is brewed by the Khalistani supporters of yesteryears who are trying to find meaning to their mundane lives abroad. If you give them Khalistan today, they'll still line up for visas outside Canadian embassy to leave. It is in Canada's interest, they douse these diaspora politics or else it will fireball into economic and security risk as it has in past.
I grew up among Punjabis and Sindhis in India, and till the late 80s, every first son of a Punjabi family and some Sindhi families was brought up Sikh. Those ~ 10,000 extremists do not represent the Sikh diaspora who have made India's name shine abroad.
These Sikhs know that when they were in dire need of help in Afghanistan only Indian Air Force under the orders of MODI came to their rescue and brought their religious book back with utmost honour. Meanwhile these Khalistanis who can afford standard of living of Canada were nowhere to be found when Sikhs were genuinely begging for help.

I think, before trying to figure out opinion in Punjab, Canadian news outlets should first try to figure out whether there is even support for Khalistan in their own Sikh community. I guess, it's a minority within that minority.

The pairing of the words Sikh and Khalistan is done not by Indians but by the western media.
I am from Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab and Haryana and there is no support for any Khalistan. Neither do we want any Hindu Rashtra nor any Khalistan. All these are threats to our secularism in India and we all must protect ourselves from these threats. BJP must also behave in ways that do not promote hatred in the country. They have done good work on economic front although jobs are a huge problem, good work on security front and foreign policy front but terrible work in social front. Sooner they realise this, the better.
I don't think any sikh in India will be that fool to ask for khalistan when they rightfully own a country called India which is much bigger than punjab and offers more opportunities. They can settle anywhere in India without any bound. They are one the most intelligent community in India running well established businesses across the country.

Religious tolerance does not mean that a country should tolerate anti-national cries that too from a few handful people based in foreign lands. There are majority sikhs living in India who do not agree with separate state demand and on the contrary are very hurt by this khalistanis. Canada government must stay out of this. The farmers protest created some discord with the agriculturist population there although their demands were eventually fulfilled. Currently Punjab is governed by a political party that is also in power in the Indian Capital territory (AAP). I think people in Canada also severely overestimate Modi and BJP's power, they have a strong federal govt infact much stronger than Trudeau and LPC have in Canada but just like LPC has almost no premiers in provinces BJP while having a few States in their Govt at state level, there are many many prosperous states that are run by other parties like Canada has many provinces run by Progressive Conservative parties of respective province. Our election system is absolutely free and fair, how else will BJP the ruiling party lose so many state elections?

1. Indians across religion, regional, political boundaries support Indian sovereignty and there is hardly any support for Khalistan in India. In fact they are helping Modi by getting the whole country behind him.
2. As there is no support for Khalistan in India. Only a fraction of Sikhs in Canada are for this. Do Canadians want to allow their country to be a home base for these kind of movements against India?

This whole Khalistan movement is so shocking to me because never in my life did I imagine Sikhs demanding seperation from India.
This shock stems from the high reagrds I put that community in. I have always felt that way ever since I visited Bangla Sahib, Delhi. The ambience was great, of course but what absolutely blowed ny mind was a Sikh men who was collecting out footwears in the counter. He just picked up everyone's footwears with his bare hands. All the while being so jovial. I knew its not a task, it's something he volunteered to do and there are many like him that would happily do the same. Just said a lot about the community.
I know that the Sikh community in India do not support Khalistan. There may be a small fraction of them who probably do but then, exceptions are always there, everywhere
I dont know why media(specially western media) keeps calling Nijjar a sikh activist and sikh leader. He was a khalistani leader not a sikh. A true sikh would never do things that these (khalistani supporters) do.
