THIS really makes me wanna programm smt like this, I was thinking of ideas for like the past month and starting projects but nothing felt right. Will start a game with mechanics like this one. How didn't I think of this, it's so good
It's actually relatively easy to program, you just need a drawing library with multi-window support. It will let you read and write the position and size of each window you have with simple calls. From that point it's mostly basic math, you calculate each entity position relatively to the screen and if they cross one of the window you display it. You don't even need to worry about synchronizing the windows. The reason why games don't do this is that even if it works conceptually, in practice it's not generally something that would benefit the gameplay in a meaningful way. It's a gimmick, like Psycho Mantis reading your memory card, what's really interesting is the idea and execution rather than the technical side of things.
I’ve had an idea for a side scrolling shoot ‘em up game where the main three worlds have a theme, with one of them being glitch/computer based. My idea for the final boss was after the dialogue the boss would build up energy, the screen would turn black and then the game would seemingly close. But then four windows would appear on the edges of the screen acting as a floor, walls and ceiling. You would appear inside a small window able to move around normally and then the transformed boss (or maybe a cool mech I haven’t decided yet) would descend from the top of the screen made out of a bunch of windows so you’re playing the game with your desktops in the background.
What a unique concept! I like it a lot, just the right amount of simple to understand, but hard to master while building your concentration. Looking forward to seeing this grow!
