At age 27 on the morning of 12 April 1961, cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, was helped into his spacesuit and made his way to the launch pad.
He climbed into the Vostok spacecraft, wondering if he would return back to earth, but was calm.

The first human in space. He wasn't some millionaire, a Rothschild or Gates, but he was a son of two working class people.
Stenrod that’s typically what millionaires do, send poor people to do their bidding. No surprise that he was killed at age 34, the Soviets never had much regard for human life.
His death was a freak accident, but go ahead and blame the Soviets over it.
You don't know nothing about the Soviet Union.
He was a combat fighter pilot, and well sometimes in flying you just get bit. I fly for a living myself, and well I know quite a few over the years that bought it. It happens. Just this past week there was a nasty one down in Costa Rica, I mention it because I have flown the same kind of Airplane for years. Cessna 208 Caravan. It happens. As for the Soviets well they are long gone now, the Russian People paid a very high price for that experiment is social engineering. They did a lot of seat of your pants kind of flying in their Space Program. While the N-1 failed to get them to the moon, the engines, while updated and tweaked a little are the engines we use to launch satellites into orbit.
Irina Volkoeva sure
Did you know? ‘CCCP’ was painted in red on Yuri Gagarin's helmet at the last minute, so he wouldn't be mistaken as a spy upon landing.

I've been to where he's buried in the Kremlin Wall necropolis in Moscow. Touching the little plaque to signify his resting place was really humbling.

I love the 30s 40s and 50s
Yeah Like 1860's too!
unknown soldier yep but i like epecially the 60s and 40s one looks pretty relaxing even if its nor and the 60s just is great for space racing and spy stories though the fifties are also great
Seth Leoric I like the 30s and 40s because of WW2 and the 50s for the music and a lot of other things
I understand what you mean, but saying "I love the 40s" without any context in a conversation is a one way ticket to losing friends.
Rest in peace Gagarin.
Russians had first satellite in space, first animal in space, first space station, landed the fist human made object on the Moon and had first human in the space and somehow Americans won the Space race because they landed on the Moon first, and even that is questionable by some.
That's like one team winning championships 5 times in a row and the other team wins just one and they declare themselves the best ever..
Also soviets landed a probe in venus
They also developed and employed the Buran analogue of the space shuttle, which was so advanced for its time, it landed on automation, withour a crew, that in itself was a collosal accomplishemnt.
Russia also were the first to land a probe on Venus and Mars. Add to that the first to have a female in space too. First to do a docking from a Russian space station to another space station. Hasn't been done again.
You know moon is waste of money buy space give us everything we have now thats why every year we sent people to space not to moon

Do American schools teach that Gagarin was the first man in space and that the USSR won the space race or they only focus on the moon landing?
bbcmotd they do. People here at our school knows that. Everybody knows that we were not the first ones to arrive in space, just the moon.
They don't go that far. Also grammar
No
Three core subjects are taught: Sputnik, Gagarin, and Apollo 11. Usually Mercury gets a footnote somewhere, maybe Gemini, but anything beyond that is special. Gagarin gets a special mention because he was first and often the teacher would explain a bit about the time and the news of the achievement. (probably not anymore since many of them have since retired) Same with Sputnik. This is usually tied in with the Cuban Missile Crisis in some way.
Sometimes there's a film involved somewhere if the teacher is either cool or just lazy. Ours happened to be October Sky and then Apollo 13 with a small quiz on each one.
no our school only teach the moon landing how sucks

You forgot about one small detail:during the transporting to the station before the flight, he requested to make a stop for a while. He left the bus and started to pee the tire. After that he came back. This action transformed into a tradition and those who didn't do that usually died (reason 'why' is still unknown).
*I bet next person will be Armstrong. I'd like to see about Joseph McCarthy.*
Because it is the last chance for cosmonauts to pee before the flight.

I love this guy, he was so cool and shows people can do anything you never know what opportunities will present themselves, son of a carpenter to first man in space and a national hero admired around the world, tragically died early but then maybe thats part of the legacy, we do tend to hold aloft those like him more so then those who just retired and died of old age.
Hey Simple History. You could make about the Normandie-Niemen squadron. It is a squadron formed of french pilots, located on the Eastern Front, flying on soviet planes, like the Yak-9 and Yak-3. Their anniversary was celebrated a short time ago. Please consider my comment.

I was looking for a comment like this
Wooooo
Weeb reference?
In Vancouver WA is a monument to Valeriy Chakalov. A guy who flew across arctic ocean but couldn't make it to San Fran cause of lack of fuel. Many speculate he was killed thru "soviet testings" because he became a celebrity and Stalin had little tolerance for competition. He also died testing a plane prototype. :(
So he died twice??
First Stalin died in 1953, 7 years before Gagarin's flight and 15 years before his death. Second during 1960s and later was Soviet union quite different than during Stalin's rule. Yes it was still a dictatorship, but the power was in the hands of the high ranking comunist party members and not only one man. Meaning that there was no one man on the top who could do what he wants, but lets say 10 people who could do what thay want, but first thay have to agreed each other. And for them was Gagarin more usefull because they can use him for their propaganda There was no need to kill him because there wasn´t any cult of personality anymore which he could threat.
There is no doubt, I admit that it was still undemocratic regime. But it was a lot worse during 1930s and 1940s.
You got that right

The reason why Gagarin's "let's go" is so popular is because in Russian it sounded more like "let's ride" instead of "let's fly". Hard to translate, but you get the idea. He basically invented a new meme
