    At age 27 on the morning of 12 April 1961, cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, was helped into his spacesuit and made his way to the launch pad.
    He climbed into the Vostok spacecraft, wondering if he would return back to earth, but was calm.

      Stenrod that’s typically what millionaires do, send poor people to do their bidding. No surprise that he was killed at age 34, the Soviets never had much regard for human life.

      He was a combat fighter pilot, and well sometimes in flying you just get bit. I fly for a living myself, and well I know quite a few over the years that bought it. It happens. Just this past week there was a nasty one down in Costa Rica, I mention it because I have flown the same kind of Airplane for years. Cessna 208 Caravan. It happens. As for the Soviets well they are long gone now, the Russian People paid a very high price for that experiment is social engineering. They did a lot of seat of your pants kind of flying in their Space Program. While the N-1 failed to get them to the moon, the engines, while updated and tweaked a little are the engines we use to launch satellites into orbit.

    Russians had first satellite in space, first animal in space, first space station, landed the fist human made object on the Moon and had first human in the space and somehow Americans won the Space race because they landed on the Moon first, and even that is questionable by some.

      Three core subjects are taught: Sputnik, Gagarin, and Apollo 11. Usually Mercury gets a footnote somewhere, maybe Gemini, but anything beyond that is special. Gagarin gets a special mention because he was first and often the teacher would explain a bit about the time and the news of the achievement. (probably not anymore since many of them have since retired) Same with Sputnik. This is usually tied in with the Cuban Missile Crisis in some way.
      Sometimes there's a film involved somewhere if the teacher is either cool or just lazy. Ours happened to be October Sky and then Apollo 13 with a small quiz on each one.

    You forgot about one small detail:during the transporting to the station before the flight, he requested to make a stop for a while. He left the bus and started to pee the tire. After that he came back. This action transformed into a tradition and those who didn't do that usually died (reason 'why' is still unknown).

    I love this guy, he was so cool and shows people can do anything you never know what opportunities will present themselves, son of a carpenter to first man in space and a national hero admired around the world, tragically died early but then maybe thats part of the legacy, we do tend to hold aloft those like him more so then those who just retired and died of old age.

    In Vancouver WA is a monument to Valeriy Chakalov. A guy who flew across arctic ocean but couldn't make it to San Fran cause of lack of fuel. Many speculate he was killed thru "soviet testings" because he became a celebrity and Stalin had little tolerance for competition. He also died testing a plane prototype. :(

      @851michal 6 років тому +2

      First Stalin died in 1953, 7 years before Gagarin's flight and 15 years before his death. Second during 1960s and later was Soviet union quite different than during Stalin's rule. Yes it was still a dictatorship, but the power was in the hands of the high ranking comunist party members and not only one man. Meaning that there was no one man on the top who could do what he wants, but lets say 10 people who could do what thay want, but first thay have to agreed each other. And for them was Gagarin more usefull because they can use him for their propaganda There was no need to kill him because there wasn´t any cult of personality anymore which he could threat.

    • @851michal
