      Some people in Congo are quite rich but unfortunately the money rarely stays in the country to raise the capital. The Malthusian trap and Resource Curse are two concepts that plague resources rich African nations. When people get rich, they start breeding like crazy which lower the overall per capita income. Since a nation is resources based and relies on cheap labour, the people are disincentivezed to do high skill jobs. Hence nations stay poor. It's tragic really.

    Cobalt was and still is primarily from the Congo and Zambia, neither of which refine the metal. Regional stability has always been an issue. Look up how Belgium treated its Congo colony. China has been nurturing relationships in Africa bigtime and this is one of the reasons. Maybe half goes into battery and catalyst apps but the rest is still in hardened metals, tool steels and magnets. You don't build high speed turbines without using cobalt alloys.

      Middle East sells their resources (oil), that's kosher, but when Africa sells its resources (e.g. cobalt), everybody says "Oh no waaaaa! Africa is a victim and whitey is bleeding them dry!" Stop making excuses and holding Africa to a lesser standard than other regions.

      No fool. This is why Africa must remain poor. Do you think you could afford any technology if the western world leave Africa to develop? If lithium batteries depends on cobalt and the DRK produces half the worlds supply why do you think it’s still in the state it’s in when they can clearly charge a ton for their precious minerals? Africa doesn’t need the world the world needs Africa.

    You actually don’t “need” cobalt to make good lithium ion cells. You’ll sacrifice some energy and power density without but the world wouldn’t end. Most of this drama around resource scarcity is a sham to benefit commodity speculators in the short term.

    Graphene easy to make easily replaces Cobalts with more highly efficient batteries that are able to charge rapidly

    • @zolikoff
      @zolikoff 6 років тому +2

      Last I checked, graphene doesn't replace cobalt in any way in a battery. You still need electrode material, graphene can be used to increase the electrode's surface area, thus improve charge times and discharge current.

    • @CalvinGeorgeSisyphus
      @CalvinGeorgeSisyphus 6 років тому

      Graphene sheets can be used as a dielectric in super capacitors aka "batteries".

    • @zolikoff
      @zolikoff 6 років тому +1

      Not as dielectric, as the capacitor plates holding the charge. Supercapacitors aren't good batteries. They have high power density but much lower energy density. So you couldn't travel far on a supercapacitor vs a battery. But you could make a very fast car out of it.
      In Li-ion batteries graphene can have the role I described in the previous comment, which is a different thing.

      I agree, but I think that before repeating sensational headlines from news articles as a known fact, it's better to read up on the actual information first.
      Scientific research could unexpectedly come up with a number of unforeseeable things, but just because it's possible, it's not correct to pretend it's already a done deal. And in fact, the safe way is to assume that it's not a done deal at all, until proven otherwise. Meanwhile you have to work with that you've got.

  • @hellcat1988
    @hellcat1988 6 років тому +16

    This cobalt scare is great for headlines, but it's almost moot with upcoming battery tech moving at the pace it is and yielding MUCH better results for charge/discharge rates and number of cycles before cell degridation. From Sodium Glass batteries to Graphine super-capacitors, the market for li-on batteries is going to be reduced significantly in the next 10 years.

    • @blazingfuryoffire1

      They already have a graphine battery bank for phones that can charge in 15 minutes, and it's just a proof of concept first gen device. With a bit of refinement, it's not hard to see it going further in development much faster as people begin to take notice.

      hellcat1988 investors will determine everything. Surprised musk doesn't tackle coal powered plants that produce the most pollution. Instead of switching from coal to battery/solar, they're working on cars. Less cars would be on the road if cities like LA went under massive changes to it's freeway system, public transport and developments.

    • @hellcat1988
      @hellcat1988 6 років тому

      That shows just how uninformed you actually are Milk. Tesla bought Solar City, a company Musk was helping with that has been producing solar systems for residential houses, as well as producing it's own large, off grid battery storage solutions to offset pollution emitters like power plants.
      Currently, Tesla now offers every single thing you need to get completely off the power grid, from transportation, to power generation and storage, to inverters to USE that stored power and charge your car.

    What are the target minerals?
    The Philippines’ top mineral exports are copper, gold and nickel. Other target minerals include quartz, mica, iron, gypsum, feldspar, chromite, calcite and sulphur. Some target non-metallic minerals are sand and gravel, limestone, marble, clay and other quarry materials.
    Cobalt is the main factor for the increased interest in minerals used in battery technology in the Philippines. The Philippines has the fourth-largest cobalt reserves worldwide, at an estimated 280,000 tonnes.
    The MGB has noted that the production value of mixed nickel-cobalt sulfide went up by 1.01 billion pesos, from 3,804 billion pesos in the first quarter of 2016 to 4,815 billion pesos in the first quarter of 2017. The MGB additionally noted that from 2012 to 2015 the joint production value of nickel direct shipping ore and mixed nickel-cobalt sulfide consistently took the top spot with a four-year average of about 49 per cent of the total metallic production value.

      +huajie666 liu:
      Cobalt is an element. I suggest that you study a little of chemistry. The only way to make an element is through a nuclear process (fusion or fission) and that is extremely time consuming and expense.
      It's the same type of question that people ask about gold. Can you make gold? Yes, we can make gold but it is cheaper to mine it. The cost difference would be 1000x more expensive for artificial gold.
